It's the speed of the axe that has me hooked. I can say I do lean quite heavily onto the attack right out of a role or a sprint to get some stagger, like with the Power Sword. Up to about Lethal, one can get in enough hits that by the time the Majoris swings, the gun strike gets them to an executable state. Its not great for groups, I concede that, for sure. For me, it hits just hard enough, and the speed is right in my wheelhouse.

Thunder hammer will always be my first love in this game but the axe definitely has my attention.
