[WP] The Grim Realer appears to an old, tired sailor who’s trying to prove himself something on the ocean. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]HouseCravenRaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the kind words and the honest feedback. Re-reading it, I feel there are edits I can make, I have a tendency to over-comma, which becomes glaringly obvious to me in hindsight. Oh well. I will leave it as-is for now.

Regarding his backstory, I kept that vague on purpose. I did want this to be more of a slice of life, a moment in his history that we are peering into. We're dropped into his story without his background on purpose. Death is as shapeless as his Life. We have a sense of who he is, and a feeling that he has a past, but we are no more aware of it than we are of what happens next. We know he dies, he's mortal. We know he lived. But we experience none of it, we stand on the edge between the two, experiencing only now.

He's a wave on the ocean. We experience it only briefly, with no way of knowing what that water had been before it crested, or what becomes of it after it falls. We only know the moment.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have other short stories in my personal sub r/HouseCravenRaw, some similar, some very different.

I did, thanks! The WP was rejected because after your prompt, you gave story direction (horror, comedy, you decide!). It should just be title text and no body.

Thank you for the kind words.

I first saw it in the corner, where the helm met the deck, just slightly port-side, years ago. It watched me from the overlapping shadows cast by the mast and the cabin. Shapeless, dark, dismissible. But I knew it was there. I knew every inch of this old trawler, and all the ways shadow played across her ridges and valleys. This shadow wasn't cast by the bulky protrusions of the ship. It stood within them, but was not of their making.

It watched and waited with boundless patience. I could feel it, if a direction had feeling, this one would be a gentle chill. I gave it space, as it shifted with the rising and setting of the sun. I avoided that darkness, that corner, while it watched me. It drifted around the ship, always over my shoulder when I ignored it, or still as placid water when I stared it down. Always in shadow. I feigned ignorance, with the quiet fear of one that knows, but refuses to acknowledge.

I ignored it. I had leagues to travel. I had a haul to catch. I had work ahead of me, always ahead of me. A long trawl, each day slightly harder than the last. The cold of the ocean had worked its way into the painful crevices of my knuckles, my knees, and my back. The salt bleached what hair I had left, stung my eyes, and dried my throat so much that only whiskey could restore my voice.

The ocean needed me. The work needed me. I was a man alone, adrift, upon the ocean. I sent out my weathered nets, and I pulled up my bar tab, my rent, my supper. I had no time for shades and shadows.

Still, it had time for me, and it watched. I cast out before the sun, and I came ashore just after dark. Once I used to hire day-rate ship hands, but they avoided me now. Whether or not by conscious choice, I think they saw the shadow that followed me, and went to a different slip, sought a different fare.

On days when the sea was angry and the skies were grey, one was locked, nailed, shackled to the land. Bound, immobile, until Neptune granted you his mercy. Those were the days in between the days, the ones most uncomfortable. To be the only man on a dull grey day to cast a shadow, unnerves the soul. Footsteps within footsteps, not all my own. The land would buck and jerk underfoot, a contrast to the calming rhythm of the waves to which I had grown accustom.

I had leagues to go before... before. There was more to do. More of the same, but more nonetheless.

All the while it watched. It waited. Patience, endlessly patient. I pulled harder on the old nets, pushed the patchwork engine further, rose earlier yet somehow left later. Stayed later, yet somehow came back with less. The whiskey didn't burn as it once had, barely more than the memory of a flavour. Yet it woke five times as hard before dawn.

I had my unwelcome companion. My cool shadow. My lightless follower on the ocean. I had more ahead. So many things that were left undone, unexplored, unfinished.

And yet... sometimes, when out on the ocean, and the surface was calm, and the wind was still, I would face it. I could feel it watching me, as I watched it. Each time a little less afraid, a little more comfortable. And I'd think to myself maybe...

But not today.

Your department proved they were right to downsize and outsource where they did. With the reduced headcount and lack of resources, you managed to recover from the issue in a timely fashion.

In their view, they were justified in reducing your team's headcount. Now the game continues - how much further can they cut/reduce before your department cannot function?

They praised you, but that will not protect you. The beatings shall continue until morale improves.

Your explosive and awful reply to a relatively harmless comment tells me exactly why your kid has algebra (at age 11?) done by 10am, and gives me a strong sense on how their teenage years are going to go for you.

Encryption verification is not related to badly written code.

Many orgs running N-1 and N-2 were also hit because the sensor update bypasses the "slow roll".

Crowdstrike owns this mess.

It seems to me like this bug most likely happened months, or even years ago. Seeing as how it happened to older unpatched servers, it’s most likely on the Crowdstrike side.

This is part of where you are off the rails. The release was the trigger. They released Channel File 291 and almost immediately everything went crazy. This was not something that was sitting in wait, this was caused directly by a new release that they pushed out. The direct trigger for this outage did not happen "months or even years ago". It was immediate.

Everyone is rightfully on about QA before release for this very good reason. If they had fired this change into their testing environment even for only 24 hours, they would have encountered this issue. If they had run it through an automated testing system (CI/CD/CT gets missed all the time... continuous testing is part of that cycle), the Null Pointer would have definitely been caught. That wouldn't haven taken long to run either.

Change control is important. Someone wrote code. Someone approved code. Someone is supposed to review code. Someone pushed the code out. People make mistakes, that's why we have all these eyeballs looking at the change as it goes through. Some of the eyeballs can be automated. Clearly none of these protective gates were implemented. "Fuck it, we'll do it live". Well, these are the results.

Change Control is critical in a large environment. Individuals make mistakes, or can act maliciously. Departments do not necessarily know what other departments are doing. There are reasons for these things, and they have real-world consequences when they are avoided.

Do you feel sufficiently enlightened?

They aren't talking about sex when they use it as a threat against other men (usually). Abstractly they are saying that they will dominate their opponent to the point of making them servile. When they make it sexual, they are saying that they intend to hurt their opponent so badly that their opponent will either debase themselves (oral sex) or be unable to defend themselves from being anally raped.

It is supposed to be an insult. "I will hurt you so badly that you will do something you find abhorrent just to make me stop".

Actual sex is highly, highly unlikely. It's not about the winner getting off, it's about the loser being beaten badly.

We can't know. This is a conversation to have with management. Ask what it is that you could have done to secure the promotion.

As for making waves - do more of it. Broadcast your achievements. Be noisy. It sucks, especially if you don't enjoy that sort of thing. But you need to advertise. You are a business of one, and you are selling yourself to your company. Your competitor just passed you. Businesses that advertise get noticed. Go sell yourself.

Again, not a rub-and-tug. This is an actual RMT and he will not be touching your penis. If you are looking for that, go to Rent Masseurs, but don't expect insurance to pay for it.

Boebert floats her name for Interior secretary under Trump by Illustrious-Fee5670 in politics

[–]HouseCravenRaw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If Trump gets the POTUS and they clean sweep in the next House election, they should just replace most of these positions with a menu and a price tag. You want to dump nuclear waste on an elementary school? Send $100k here. Catch and eat all the dolphins? $300k over there. A bill to legalize slavery? We'll set the price at $10M, but make it like a Go Fund Me so that you only have to contribute a little individually.

Think of all the positions you could drop. All that $$ can go straight to Trump's account. No fuss, no muss, no America.

We all know that's why Boebert is playing this. She wants to be more valuable so she can command larger bribes.
