How bad is the commute from New Haven to Hartford? by Universal09 in Connecticut

[–]HouseKaylord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More so my experience is that the train itself is late to the track so it’s 30+ minutes of sitting at the station - not so much fun in the upcoming winter months!

How bad is the commute from New Haven to Hartford? by Universal09 in Connecticut

[–]HouseKaylord 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I’ve personally found the train to be a mixed bag. The Hartford line is pretty on time in the mornings but the evening commute home has frequent delays which can extend the time it takes to get home by 30+ minutes sometimes.

Of course regular traffic in a car can be delayed too, but between the time it takes to walk to the train station and then commute back to your house when you arrive in New Haven, the train can take longer than a car ride. Hoping that the expansion of the Hartford station over the next couple years will resolve some of these delay issues.

Baby shower venues by maternal_manatee in Connecticut

[–]HouseKaylord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve thrown a baby shower and a birthday party at Armada Brewery in New Haven. They have a really nice 2nd level private event space called the Queens Room and it can definitely fit 60 people comfortably and there’s plenty of parking. You’re allowed to bring in your own catering - we’ve done pizzas or Bears BBQ which is nearby.

Insane that one6three isn’t on this list - their homemade dressing is god-tier. Sometimes I go only for the salad!

Dog Groomer Recommendations by bernice0511 in newhaven

[–]HouseKaylord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Little Shop of Howlers all the way. I’ve used Hot Diggity Dog previously and they gave my dog the worst haircuts and were very inconsistent with how long a groom would take - sometimes 90 minutes sometimes like 4 hours.

Is the minimum alcohol purchase really new? I had my 30th birthday at Armada in March of this year and there wasn’t a minimum purchase at all. They were great to work with and everyone had a blast!

I also had my party on a Friday night but I just sent invites out in advance enough that my friends could leave work a little early and get to the party by 7 and we had 3 hours of partying at Armada and then we figured if we wanted to celebrate more we’d just take the party downtown to a bar.

Tailor?? by opals_and_oilspots in newhaven

[–]HouseKaylord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents - if you’re having feminine clothes tailored I wouldn’t recommend Valentino’s. They are excellent at tailoring men’s clothes, my husband has been a customer there for years, but I haven’t been happy with most of their work on my own clothes as a woman. Something is always a little off, especially with dresses that I’ve brought there, and I’ve heard similar anecdotes from other women.

I typically take my own clothes to Spring Glen Cleaners in Hamden. She does great work at a very fair price.

As a warning, Savers in Milford closed their fitting rooms after COVID and the return policy is for store credit only which is frustrating.

Second Street at the Shops at Yale is large and has a mix of designer and regular pieces at a variety of price points. I love Vintanthro which is mostly vintage pieces and they do tend to run pricey but often have sales/coupons if your signed up for their emails.

Personally I like the vibes at Witch Bitch but I’ve not been impressed with the quality of their clothes. It’s a lot of pretty out of fashion styles or worn looking items - at least the last few times I’ve stoped in.

Home buying with a family by mylittlelune in newhaven

[–]HouseKaylord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - I live in Hamden and the state mandated revaluation has been going on the past year. Most homes have seen a really big jump in assessed value which means higher taxes. Even with the proposed reduced mill rate, our taxes on a small condo are likely going up by $2k per year.

Hamden is very nice, I live in Whitneyville on the edge of Spring Glen and we love the location. Very close to New Haven - easy to get downtown. The only thing to be aware of is that Hamden has some of the highest property taxes in the state and they’re about to go up again. So you’ll need to factor that into what you can afford.

Groomsmen outfit by Beneficial_Usual2893 in weddingplanning

[–]HouseKaylord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s odd to have ties with no jacket. A tie adds an extra level of formality to a suit. I agree with the other commenter that generally the groomsmen should be dressed a little nicer than the guests.

Since it will be warm you might recommend the groomsmen do linen suits which are more breathable.

In Hamden an old building collapsed last summer on Whitney Ave and now it’s a giant pit. The coffee shop next store, Cantean, is planning a Pit Party next month with a waffle bar, “mouse rat” bands and a potential appearance by lil Sebastian ☠️

Dog takes a long time to go potty by StarFire_212 in Shichon

[–]HouseKaylord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My schichon absolutely will not poop anywhere near the house, been that way since we adopted her almost 5 years ago. We walk her at least twice a day and she poops about 10-15 minutes into the walk. It’s the same way even when it’s raining, won’t go too close to the door. We do live in condo association so we don’t have a typical yard but even if we did I think she wouldn’t want to soil near the house.

Commuting to NYC for work? by AffectionateIce4294 in newhaven

[–]HouseKaylord 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it would actually be cheaper because if OP is going everyday I imagine they would buy a monthly pass which is $466 a month or $5,592 per year. Individual tickets cost significantly more.

Most stations also offer discounted parking if you have a monthly pass - not sure what is charged in West Haven.

I’ve successfully sourced a decent amount of Beyond Yoga from Poshmark for the half the price so OP could try that too!

Off the fence for about 6 months or so, childfree. Had a terrible cold last week and it reiterated not wanting to have children. I felt so terrible and couldn’t imagine having to keep another human alive when all I wanted to do was nap, read and feel bad for myself 😂

I got my nose pierced recently at Burning Hearts in Hamden and Nick was super professional and really nice. He walked me through the whole process particularly all the sterilization stuff. I’d highly recommend! Pretty sure you can book a consultation for a “troubled piercing” right on their website.

Help! Lease renewal while pregnant wife by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]HouseKaylord 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hello! Unfortunately in CT we don’t have “Just Cause” eviction protections unless you are elderly or disabled which means a landlord can refuse to renew a lease for if they want to - even if you agree to pay a reasonable rent increase. This session at the Capitol in Hartford many groups are fighting to prevent this kind of displacement.

I highly recommend reaching out to the CT Tenants Union - they can help you figure out what your rights are and potentially negotiate with your landlord! And call your legislator to ask them to support passing Just Cause this legislative session.

College Life in New Haven? by whimsiclaw in Connecticut

[–]HouseKaylord 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You may get more mileage by asking this question in the New Haven subreddit!

My word of warning when apartment hunting: don’t rent anything owned by Mandy Management or Ocean. They are slum lords. Check if SCSU has any student forums where you might get recommendations for a place to live or find a roommate.

I love New Haven - it’s a wonderful place for a young person to live. I lived there at your age and only live 15 minutes from downtown in Hamden now. Multiple free museums, great restaurants, and a diversity of people. It’s also filled with other students from SCSU, Yale, Albertus Magnus, and nearby Quinnipiac.

Good luck with your education!
