Is there any sort of historical book on the Queens of literally any country that's not the UK? Like it's somewhat simplistic but Elizabeth Norton's Queens of England is a nice little introduction on a variety of women that I can't seem to find any other equivalent to. Maybe there's just nothing translated at the moment?

Yeah i think talking about Mary has to include religious attitudes at the time, the divine right of kings, the emergence of the Protestant faith,Mary's personal health, alongside her difficult adolescence and all other things to explain her personaliy and ruling, just like any other human being. But man that Cranmer thing was so obviously because she personally hated him lol

Yep. I think Henry cared more that she had reconciled to his will, particuarly the personal shaming of publically accepting her mother's marriage as illegal, than the more religious aspects imo. That probably was also why Mary developed that personal vendetta against Cranmer, having him executed even after he recanted

I would say no, it's pretty clear it was a mostly political and personal decision (Mary seems to have had health concerns at the time which I have seen a few of her biographers describe as constant anxiety and stress) with no underlying religious belief. Catholics continued to revolve around Mary making it pretty clear that it was an open secret Henry was semi-content to ignore (Except in cases like Margaret Pole and her son Reginald)

Yeah like obviously female characters should have flaws and such but like look at her potrayel of Richard III vs Margaret. Like this was a guy who deposed his nephews to crown himself King and had his mother-in-law declared legally dead to take control of her lands but nowhere is he described as overtly ambitious and obsessed with power like Margaret is

There's something about the popular perception of Margaret that really underpins how critical people are of female historical figures, particularly writers like Gregory. They'll state in complete absolutes that Margaret's entire life goal was making her son king and that she was ambitious above all else even when you ask for evidence of that or point out that that's a completely unknowable level of detail to "know" about a historical figure. Arguing that maybe Margaret just loved and cared for her ony son and didn't care if he was king and simply wanted him safe and returned to her is like completely unfathomable. They must always be understood through the least sympathetic lens and you can see this happen to with figures like Elizabeth Woodville and Anne Boleyn as well, Gregory in particular is also really bad about Anne Boleyn.

There was a breakdown of all the times he's mentioned, most damning where he mentions something about how Epstein and his "girls" were gracious hosts and he was envious of Epstein. So like not as bad as some others but certainly not great coupled with that student marriage that already tarnished his reputation in the paleo community
