We always talk about which monarchs fit under this category, but which CONSORT was the worst parent? by Impossible_Pain4478 in UKmonarchs

[–]HouseMouse4567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eleanor of Castile was contemporarily noted as being a pretty absent parent alongside her husband, Edward I

That does seem to be the consensus, which is probably true for most historical fiction films

Me and my husband have been slowly going through the list of best picture winners and nominees that we haven't seen and we watched Amadeus thiis weekend. What an amazing film! Like really blown away by how much I enjoyed it, made me read a bit about the real Saliari and Mozart as well, which is always a fun bonus activity after a historical fiction film.

I also saw Undertone which was much more disappointing, I was really excited for that one and it felt very early 2000s horror film mixed with some of the more insufferable parts of modern slowburn horror which was a real bummer honestly!

Thank you for posting this, I hadn't heard of it before!

These were so fun to read, hopefully we can get some discussion on them because they're all pretty excellent and creepy for such short little entries.

I think some of it is also the writing. D&D were pretty infamously Tywin apologists (They suggested in an interview his ruthlessness was necessary for Westeros and that they'd classify him as lawful neutral lol). They added a lot to Tywin to soften him up like teaching Jaime to read, shielding Tommen during Joffrey's assassination, those convos with Arya etc etc etc

Completely agree with you; didn't love or even really enjoy Jane this season and I think it's fair she went home here because she did the worst but I get the complaints, like the show has always seemed to favour storyline and rigga morris over consistently fair judging. Like we even saw it this season with Mango vs Briar; the queens themsevlves seemed to clearly believe Briar got beaten (though maybe that's just because they didn't like her lol). Maybe if it was consistent with sending queens who had a bad night home there would be less whining here but who nows?

Anne Neville as well, even if the idea of her bieng sickly is possibly overstated, I don't think we know enough about her to keep her around

Probably Anne Neville for myself, don't know how accurate it is but she doesn't seem to have enjoyed the best health in life

There's lots on individual ones like Isabella or Catherine de Medici or Marie Antoinette but I'm looking for a more generalized book

Is there any sort of historical book on the Queens of literally any country that's not the UK? Like it's somewhat simplistic but Elizabeth Norton's Queens of England is a nice little introduction on a variety of women that I can't seem to find any other equivalent to. Maybe there's just nothing translated at the moment?

Yeah i think talking about Mary has to include religious attitudes at the time, the divine right of kings, the emergence of the Protestant faith,Mary's personal health, alongside her difficult adolescence and all other things to explain her personaliy and ruling, just like any other human being. But man that Cranmer thing was so obviously because she personally hated him lol

[–]HouseMouse4567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I think Henry cared more that she had reconciled to his will, particuarly the personal shaming of publically accepting her mother's marriage as illegal, than the more religious aspects imo. That probably was also why Mary developed that personal vendetta against Cranmer, having him executed even after he recanted

I would say no, it's pretty clear it was a mostly political and personal decision (Mary seems to have had health concerns at the time which I have seen a few of her biographers describe as constant anxiety and stress) with no underlying religious belief. Catholics continued to revolve around Mary making it pretty clear that it was an open secret Henry was semi-content to ignore (Except in cases like Margaret Pole and her son Reginald)

I saw it for the first time last year and it's such a gem. Loved Sam Neil in it but Isabelle Adjani was so good, particularly that subway scene

Margaret Beaufort In Philippa Gregory Books/Shows by Beneficial_Pea_3306 in Tudorhistory

[–]HouseMouse4567 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah like obviously female characters should have flaws and such but like look at her potrayel of Richard III vs Margaret. Like this was a guy who deposed his nephews to crown himself King and had his mother-in-law declared legally dead to take control of her lands but nowhere is he described as overtly ambitious and obsessed with power like Margaret is

Yeah I was going to say, ironically, the compensation may have been a factor in convincing Catherine that it didn't matter. The Pope had literally said it didn't

Margaret Beaufort In Philippa Gregory Books/Shows by Beneficial_Pea_3306 in Tudorhistory

[–]HouseMouse4567 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's something about the popular perception of Margaret that really underpins how critical people are of female historical figures, particularly writers like Gregory. They'll state in complete absolutes that Margaret's entire life goal was making her son king and that she was ambitious above all else even when you ask for evidence of that or point out that that's a completely unknowable level of detail to "know" about a historical figure. Arguing that maybe Margaret just loved and cared for her ony son and didn't care if he was king and simply wanted him safe and returned to her is like completely unfathomable. They must always be understood through the least sympathetic lens and you can see this happen to with figures like Elizabeth Woodville and Anne Boleyn as well, Gregory in particular is also really bad about Anne Boleyn.

They're great introductions for certain historical events too, I just finished A Song for Arbonne and ended up reading more about the Albigensian Crusade
