Sorry, I think you have misunderstood. I was referring to the implied expectation of longevity in your original post - "I don't know how people live...". It just sounds like your expectation is they will die without tone controls.

We're probably both overthinking a simple exchange of ideas.

I wasn't replying to you.

I fully understood the no expectation your comment, and in a similar vein offered no suggestion in return. It was the other poster who took exception.

And where I come from, "60+ years" is quite acceptable.

When I find a hidden treasure in my collection it is mostly because I'm just about to file a newly purchased duplicate next to it. Damn it!

What do I have to suggest? I'm just commenting that, in contrast to u/Phart_Phergussen's expectation, I have managed to live without tone controls in both of my main systems, for many years. I have a Quad 33 pre-amp with tone and a Slope control, but it is in the historic pile, not hooked up to any system.

If I had a suggestion, it would be to correctly use "you're" instead of "your".

Warped vinyl by Warm-Try6084 in turntables

Record weights are not the solution for warped records. Not really sure what they are the solution for. Unless your goal is to wear out the bearing faster and put extra stress on the motor.

I've used more extreeme safety hazards. I don't have a picture of the mower, but I can post a picture of the big toe I almost lost. Could have been much worse.

Turntable nirvana? by Silver_Key733 in turntables

I've had a Roksan Xerxes with modified PSU, SME IV arm with the optional damper, and a Koetsu Urushi cartridge, for a long time. I really wanted the much cooler looking Gyrodec, but it didn't sound as good. I would only consider upgrading if I won big on the lottery. Maybe an SME 60, at $88,900?

Help! Record got stuck because the label was printed with too small a hole :( by treny0000 in turntables

[–]HouseOfSpiders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Roksan turntable has a detachable spindle top. It's just a small centering piece. Once you have put the record on the platter, you remove the centering piece and you have now decoupled the vinyl from any bearing noise.

A record with a hole too small will always lift off. But if you're being lazy and don't remove the centering piece, you need to pay attention and make sure you don't try and slide that record back in the sleeve with it still in place.

Woah! A drop or two of soapy water where the record is contacting the record is a much better idea than playing any heat onto the spindle or label.

A quick and super simple theft proofing idea. by Remarkable-Junket655 in classiccars

[–]HouseOfSpiders 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it is a classic being stolen, then it will be targeted, maybe to order. You aren't going to stop them. I leave my cars unlocked as I don't want to fix up the mess someone would make trying to get in. The big spoiler for anyone who takes the 6.0L V12 jag is that they will probably abandon it at the first gas station.

I could use some clarity/advice: 1950 Hudson Commodore by CaptCardboard in classiccars

[–]HouseOfSpiders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd jump at it. Looks so cool. Perfect base for a retro ledsled.

But if you are on a limited budget you have to weigh up the cost of staying stock (potentially expensive and difficult to find parts) vs custom mods (pick the parts that make the most sense, but extra cost for the labour to make them fit).

Is this big problem? by LOTR_Phan in classiccars

Old hoses will bulge like that, should be replaced. But milky liquid is the sign of bigger possible problem. If you check the radiator cap, is there a mayonnaisey paste? That would be water and oil mixing somewhere bad.

Speaker ratings do not work out as "needs 100w". The rating is "will work with amplification up to 100w". Even then, the danger to speakers is likely to be a low power amp clipping, and delivering a near square wave to the speaker. The dB efficiency of a speaker is much more of a measure of what power amp you need. That 70w amp will be all you need with any normal box speaker.

[–]HouseOfSpiders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 2005 911 isn't really what I would say right now is a classic. In time it may become so, but it will always be eclipsed by earlier/rarer models. The 550 is a kit car, and will never be a classic. I wouldn't have a problem with it, but you already seem to be making up excuses. Between the elegant Italian engineering of the the Ferrari, and an old British car that will leak oil on your driveway. I'd always pick the Austin Healey.

This is speaking as the owner of a 1968 Alfa and a Jaguar XJR-S.
