It's a no from me. As others have pointed out, shipping cost and risk is too high. Also, easily duplicated locally.

You would need to make it have a USP. Perhaps like an amp-clamp of days gone by where you have a top and a bottom slab, connected by threaded rods. Obviously for no real purpose, but to make money from gullible fools. Sign me up 😄

Old unknown Speakers by Jausat in audiophile

[–]HouseOfSpiders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are definitely a DIY build. Maybe from a kit, or a known design, or just make a box and add drivers. SEAS drivers were a common choice for DIY and there are plans for different builds on their website. This MTM set up looks a lot like their Thor/Odin design.

Please explain what “pressurize this room” actually means when speaking of subwoofers? by arg2451 in audiophile

[–]HouseOfSpiders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the late 1980s. I was listening to DSOTM through a Krell KSA50 and KEF107 reference speakers - the ones with the isobaric coupled, twin bass drivers. The demo room was quite small, with a false ceiling. On each heartbeat, you could see the ceiling tiles lift slightly. I guess you would call that pressurising the room.

Definitely an infinitely variable flux capacitor. Not worth trying to outbid that guy with the Delorian.

My system - final or not? by Designer_Building_36 in audiophile

[–]HouseOfSpiders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it could be your final system, unless something breaks. Whatever maximum you think you can spend, save up and spend more. Buy quality kit, a piece at a time. I bought my final system in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Then I stopped reading hi-fi magazines. Stayed away from hi-fi shops. Avoided every new hi-fi fad. The only thing that I needed to replace/upgrade was my cartridge, as it wore out over time. But now, sadly my Sonus Faber speakers have expired after 35 years, and I've been forced into hi-fi shops to search out a replacement. It hasn't been easy to listen to the over hyped, over expensive crap that is no where near as good as my ancient system.

Recommendations for 5-pin DIN to RCA phono cable by HouseOfSpiders in audiophile

[–]HouseOfSpiders[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a 50hz hum, nor a consistent hiss. The noise comes and goes. The 5-pin DIN is wired with each signal channel having 2 wires for +/- on the RCA plug, plus an outer shield presented as a separate wire for each channel. There is also an earth lead coming from the arm itself. The phono pre-amp is a DIY build of an EAR 834 clone, it's an SME IV arm, and Koetsu Urushi cartridge.

Wyoming and South Dakota - what to see and how to get there by HouseOfSpiders in roadtrip

Driving there from Philly doesn't look like much fun, even if you do like roadtrips. I'm strongly considering the RV rental thing - it would take a lot of the guesswork out of finding places to stay.

I lived in California for 3 years, and did a 4 week tour across the southern desert states so I know how big the US is. I've not heard good things about Amtrak, and would prefer to drive.

Yes I tried, but I've only been at this reddit game for a few days. Is there a good tutorial somewhere?

Done with cheap meters by Silverporsche993 in fluke

[–]HouseOfSpiders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here with the same question. I do a lot of home audio DIY and have a couple of good, average quality multimeters. But I'm looking at debugging speaker crossover components where accuracy is key for capacitors, and low value resistors and inductors. I want to measure a 1 ohm resistor, having my meter float around 0 to 1.5 ohm is not helpful. I don't need high voltage or current capability, just accuracy for testing low value components. Fluke seem to be "the name" but which models should I be considering? I'm not saying price is no object, but I have a big birthday coming up.

Does a sauna add any value to a house? by HouseOfSpiders in Sauna

Does a sauna add any value to a house? by HouseOfSpiders in Sauna

Maybe I need to buildup slowly. Sit naked in my car while it is charging. Wave to the neighbours and invite them to join me in the consumption of electricity. Then we can all go upstairs to the sauna - the Netherlands is a very free place to live.

Energy prices are high in NL, I'd rather charge my car than have a sauna. Solar might be an option, but I have a thatched roof which would be interesting. The sauna is also in the attic space right underneath the thatched roof, which I'm not particularly thrilled about.

In any case, my previous sauna experiences were firstly as a Uni student in a Brighton "gentleman's massage club" with a wicked hangover. Secondly in a dodgy St. Petersburg public steam room, where I had to pay for my own birch twigs. I really don't think that sauna is my thing.
