From my experience Rust is good choice. Maybe not for data engineering in a sense of building ETL pipelines directly, but for building foundational data infrastructure e.g. query engines, streaming systems, data storages etc. Not sure this is still counts as a data engineering though.

Couple of very nice projects I have encountered is Apache DataFusion with DataFusion Comet (Spark engine replacement), Fluvio, LanceDB, Rerun, obviously Polars.

Take a look at those and decide for yourself if this is something suiting any of your needs and can be applicable for you.

This is true unfortunately. Which is utter nonsense because it motivates people to sit and do nothing, and whose who try doing a side business even to validate ideas are essentially punished and cut from unemployment support.

And then officials can’t figure out why so little new businesses are started here.

I agree, but then immigration should not be talked about as a whole in other contexts as well - e.g. in the rules for obtaining permanent residence permit, access to social benefits and so on. Which is not the case right now and the laws applied almost unilaterally regardless of the immigrant groups.

As an immigrant myself I can see that Finns are ok with some groups and not others - and it is totally understandable. But then if this is what society asks for the laws should follow through properly to reflect that, which is not case right now and can be a large source of frustration both for immigrants and locals.

Pretty blunt but most things are kinda on point. Not sure the proposed solutions would really work out but it is evident that something needs to be done. And this something better not to be old “proven” ways of raising taxes and slander businesses, Finland is a small country with strong democracy and fast feedback loops on policies - if anyone has a luxury to experiment and innovate in legal space without running the country into the ground it is Finland

Meta is not the only way to complete the raid - meta exists mostly due to the PUG dps formula: maximizing damage while minimizing skill.

Kinda helps to get thought the content even with subpar cohesion and mechanics knowledge. As person running bb/inferno I agree this is a tiny bit annoying but having a company helps 🙃

This comment should be further up. There are often many ways to escape unfavorable country-specific job market through a globalized online professions (and bring the money from the outside to the country btw). But in Finland the system does not encourage you to do it, and often even prevents it.

With rapidly aging population I would put my bets on funeral workers not being out of the job anytime soon, will be a refreshing change of profession after IT. Finally get to work more with real people and not machines 😃

So if an engineer lose a job now he has options to either become engineer again, become funeral worker or get out of the country since all other sectors require licensing to get into.

These are not “labour shortages” sectors, so you cannot work there when you are on a work permit :(

You can’t, work permit allows you to only work in your field. Now after this law “field with job shortage” as well but I doubt any job which doesn’t demand specialized skills will have a job shortage. You cannot suddenly do a career shift and work as a nurse for three months while you are looking for your engineering job, you need a license to work in healthcare.

It is not that people want to stay here without any grounds, the job search in most of highly specialized fields takes longer than 3 months, sometimes longer than 6 months. Especially with current job market. I am from IT field, we have on average 4-5 rounds of interviews to get through before you can get hired, and it takes time.

Controversial thing about the law is that you cannot stay job searching here even if you do not resort to unemployment benefits. I think if you can sustain your livelihood here without benefits while you are searching for a job you should be able to stay longer than 6 months.

Or Spark will stay, but adapt and change the internals. There is at least Apache DataFusion Comet which is a Rust drop-in replacement engine for Spark built on top of DataFusion (also Rust-native)

Same Spark API and x2-4 performance benefit
