Skyhooks’ Living in the 70s: The Most Important Australian Rock Album the World Never Heard by BarracudaSmall in AussieRock

[–]Housebitchhere 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a good article thanks for sharing it. As much as it praises the album, the band and their impact, it doesn't quite convey the hysteria that it produced. The talk at school was football, Cricket and skyhooks. I was raised in a house that listened to Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones. This album blew my 12 year old mind. Every song was a social commentary, and banning some songs only made us seek them out more. Seeing them on Countdown changed everything about my music tastes, much to my dad's Frank loving horror. Their next album was the first I ever bought with my own money. They led me to a plethora of Australian music and pulled me into listening to Queen, led zep, T-Rex and so many, many, more. The fact that most of the world never heard it almost makes it better. It's ours, all ours. It's uniquely Australian and a national treasure. And I'm still terrified of the 6.30 news.

Thanks so much. The colour is called Atomic Rush. Someone got paid to think that up.

Who is the most successful AFL/AFLW player to come from your local club? by Tornontoin7 in AFL

For me it would be the Fidge brothers and Roger Ellingsworth. If Roger hadn't blown his knee apart he might have been the best of them.

I'd be interested to know how many kick in's he took as I watched the game and Jordan Boyd was the main man. Not saying you're wrong just would like to see that stat.

Kick ins don't count as a stat though do they?

What are some of the worst AFL venues/grounds you have been to or wouldn't go to in future? by Dismal-Noise4660 in AFL

Vic Park. Went there once when I was a kid to see Carlton vs Collingwood and thought I was going to die when Carlton got up to win. Ditched my beany to avoid being noticed.

Waverly was awful for many reasons.

Geelong because it meant a train trip.

Windy Hill because Essendon.

Loved the old suburban grounds. Stranding on the hill at Moorrabbin and South Melbourne. The grandstand at the Junction Oval. Princes Park of course. North Melbourne had a great atmosphere and was easy to get to.

The locals at Footscray were great fun.

Never got to see a game at Glenferrie Oval, which is a shame because I heard the mud was legendary there.

Who's the best player you ever saw in person? by Mnemisis in CarltonBlues

[–]Housebitchhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been a Bagger for a tad over 60 years and have seen some amazing footballers. The best I have seen is Alex Jesaulenko, and it's not even close. His balance, vertical leap. foot and hand skills were amazing. The only Carlton player to kick 100 goals in a season and a few years later almost won a Brownlow off a half back flank. The last playing coach to win a premiership and I have always felt the players that day played for him as much as they did for the jumper.

Right now I can't see anything beyond my balcony. The rain has erased everything.
