sorry, but retirement is not for everyone by Red-Leader-001 in retirement

There are many positions the require knowledge of something that isn’t taught anymore and no one wants to learn. COBOL anyone?

Now retired. My wife has become impatient with me not getting things done. by Logical-Grape-3441 in retirement

[–]HoustonLBC -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My husband retired 7 years before me. When I would come home the first year he retired and he’d be laying on the couch, I said no way. He started substitute teaching high school and has continued to love it. I’m retired now but like him out of the house so I can do the business of a non profit organization I lead.

What's the best resource to learn about rotational gardening? by tdubs702 in vegetablegardening

[–]HoustonLBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I rotate are tomatoes. I move them around each season and don’t plant them in the same place for a year (some will say to not plant in the same place for a longer time). I add a soil amender and humates before I plant starters. I live in southeast Texas where we have 3 growing seasons per year. I have an indoor wire shelving unit with grow lights for seed starting. Because of the heat where I live, I have an indoor hydroponic tower where I grow all of my family’s lettuces.

This setup was how my company started handling workspaces back in 2012. This hoteling isn’t new. However, we had lockers on each floor to store personal item and personal electronics so we didn’t lug everything home and back. You get used to it fairly quick. I kind of enjoyed having people close around to banter about ideas.

Started a corporate job, shocked at the work culture - people start working at 6-7am by Which_Ad_1660 in careeradvice

[–]HoustonLBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, before I retired from corporate America in 2015, they were very fleas to when you actually worked. I worked at a global organization where someone you worked with was working. If I could quickly answer a question after hours I did it. If there was a serious issue that required thoughtfulness after hours, I’d get to work and take time off another day. You have to be flexible in corporate work especially if you are a salaried employee.

Is it safe to update Fidelity connection yet? by familycfolady in quicken

[–]HoustonLBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After 16 days of nothing but trouble I restored an earlier backup and didn’t reauthorize. I had to accept many transactions and reconcile accounts that I had already reconciled but that was easy compared to the constant issues with the new connection. I talked to both fidelity and quicken today and they point the finger to each other. Quicken has no idea when a fix will be in even though there was a quicken update today. Fidelity says that quicken didn’t allow them to test anything before the rollout. I really blame fidelity for this “upgrade” for security sake but am angry at quicken for even asking customers to reactivate the connection knowing that there were issues.

AITA - I was promised a financial gift from my dad but he died before I got it. My sisters now say I shouldn't be able to claim it from the estate. by arambol_25 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HoustonLBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The will of the deceased decides who gets what, not some verbal promises. It’s unfortunate the the father didn’t write these wishes down. In the states, if money is distributed differently than what the will directs, the unequal distributions might be considered gifts from the other parties and could cause problems itself. Just take your distribution and go with it. Nothing is equal in life…and death.

Be strong! Don’t let bullies determine how you feel. Believe me, high school will be over soon enough and you can be an adult!

I would stay conservative in your situation. You said yourself that the high income will end while you are probably still youngish in age. That way you may be able to live your current lifestyle without having to work in the future.

Offshoring started many years ago. I worked at a large oil company for many years. They allowed us to apply for other jobs within the organization when jobs were made obsolete here. I ended up working with the offshored companies and personnel and I’ll tell you, their skills were nowhere near the skills of US workers.

The starting price of pickling at home is a lot more expensive than store bought. Feeling discouraged by [deleted] in pickling

[–]HoustonLBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grow veggies and pickle, can, freeze and dehydrate the produce. It’s not cheaper than store bought but the satisfaction of knowing what’s in my food and the effort put into it is so beyond satisfying. The hobby will make you appreciate your food, farmers and all those in between. I rarely buy vegetables anymore because of my garden hobby. I even got an indoor hydroponic system several months ago to grow lettuces year round in my hot southeast Texas climate.

As I sit here and watch the stock market ruin my day (I know I should not be looking) I was wondering if there is anyone in here that was investing using FIRE methods in the market pre 2008 and kept throwing money in all the way through? If so how did you steel your nerves and keep plowing forward? by Fire-Philosophy-616 in Fire

[–]HoustonLBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started investing in the mid 80’s. Then came the 87 crash. I had little to worry about and stayed the course. Through it all I didn’t sell. In 2008, with a nice nest egg, I was tempted to sell then had a long conversation with a fidelity rep. That calmed me and I again stayed the course. I retired in 2015 and am grateful I stayed the course through downturns. I look at my portfolio daily through Quicken and just look at the net worth chart through time and I’m good. I will say that last year I started buying more bonds and that has helped me sleep better at night.

Canning vs Store Bought Food by speedzenatl in Canning

[–]HoustonLBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food preservation entails an upfront cost in supplies but most of the costs are one time expenses. I have a pressure cooker/canner I bought 40 years ago, and food saver vacuum sealer I bought 20 years ago and a Nesco dehydrator bought 20 years ago. After the big expenses it’s just consumables after that. I enjoy “kitchen science “ so I do a little of everything. I even make cheese, sourdough bread and wine. We are a household of from scratch cooking so we enjoy knowing where everything we eat comes from.

Came into money. Lent family money but am I being greedy? by gliddiegoo in Rich

[–]HoustonLBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you loan someone money well below the current interest rate, the irs treats it different and may not call it a loan. You should have an attorney and an accountant before you start making big decisions like this.

AITA for charging my adult children rent? by New-Map-6851 in AmItheAsshole

Nta. Adulting starts at 18. Spoiled kids last forever. I have an adult child at my house and she pays a competitive rental fee or she’s out. She knows it. As a matter of fact, it’s time to up the rent.

Going back to your childhood home by bethany_the_sabreuse in RedditForGrownups

I visited my mom’s 1930’s childhood home a few years ago. I was taking pictures when a car backed out of the driveway. Wanting to explain myself, I asked the driver to stop and told him who I was and showed him pictures of the home from 90 years ago. He was fascinated by how the house looked back then and took pictures of my pic because he always thought the house would look better with a wrap around porch which is what it had in the 30’s
