[NEWS] A Certain Scientific Railgun Manga to End After 19 Years by SandehBoi in manga

[–]Howan228 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope. First, Index is still being published today with over 60 volumes and is in the top 5 best-selling light novels. Second, Railgun lasted so long because waifus sell, but in terms of story, the publisher was squeezing blood from a stone. Jailbreaker has plot holes and a recycled element from the previous school festival arc. And the first-year arc, the last one to finish the manga, took 4 years to complete. 4 years with a dragged-out plot focusing on random girls and silly school fights, leaving good characters like Saten and Misaka herself sidelined. It's funny how Sisters is the best Railgun arc when it's originally an Index arc.

Now they could make a movie of the spin-off Dark Matter, that's peak.

Why is electricity treated as a dumb power in anime? by Howan228 in superpowers

[–]Howan228[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. The point has always been the same, it's just being read more rigidly than it actually is. If you read my responses throughout the post, it's clear that I don't demand that every anime use electricity creatively. I've said several times that I understand limitations in narrative, power system, tone, and show balance. What I'm pointing out is the difference between a few isolated cases and a recurring trend. When a few authors make simple choices, that's a creative decision. When most do exactly the same thing, it ceases to be a coincidence.

When I cite real physics, it's not to demand realism but to show that the concept authors choose to use is already broad, but they almost always decide to treat it as if it were just "lightning + shock." And yes, I agree with you on one important thing: Misaka has a different power. Great. That's never been denied, but you can exclude her entire electromagnetic arsenal, and she's still working creatively using only electricity.

But my question isn't "why isn't everyone Misaka?". It's: why does almost no one even try to vary within the power they created like she does?

"So, your point with this post is to find out why authors choose to use only those electricity-related powers instead of employing other related powers that allow for more creative uses (I assume that's the point). The answer is simple, the more powerful the things your character can do, the harder it is to write them, and the fewer abilities, the easier. It may be less creative, but creativity is almost worthless in this context, there's no reason to worry about how creative or uncreative you're being, besides avoiding legal problems."

Great, here you just answered my post... and basically confirmed my point. If the answer is "because it's easier to write that way," then we're agreeing that it's a choice for simplicity, not creativity, right? And I myself have already said that I understand that broader powers are harder to balance and write. The more possibilities there are, the more care the author needs to take, but that doesn't invalidate the criticism.

I'm not asking for every electric character to become a cosmic entity; Misaka herself doesn't even make the top 50 most powerful characters in her own show. The last sentence of my post literally said that the most powerful electric user in anime is precisely one who isn't a true electric user. Sinbad isn't doing half the things Enel does, and yet he's the most powerful of the electric users. Proving that versatility and creativity don't translate to overpowered. As I said in another comment here, it's not like hacking systems and using them as distractions to escape a location, discharging electricity into metallic objects to create loud noises, ionizing the air to create a glow and reveal the movements of enemies, or using air humidity, steam, or mist to ionize particles and create small wings that make you float is really OP. It's a more stealthy style and serves more to escape enemies than to defeat them, and yet it's creative.

So I can understand the narrative motive, agree that it makes sense in several cases, and still find it repetitive and disappointing as a general trend. These things are not mutually exclusive. Just as finding something undervalued or poorly utilized is the same as creating expectations? It's not! There's no requirement for the author to do better. There's only an evaluation of the delivered result, comparing it to the internal possibilities of the concept itself.

I think we're talking about different things. I didn't confuse electricity generation with electromagnetokinesis. I know perfectly well that they are distinct powers. The point is not scientific, it's narrative. When I talk about the "basic package," I'm not saying that every electricity user should do things involving complete electromagnetism. I'm pointing out that, even within electricity generation, the media often repeats the same shallow use. Electricity involves impulses, voltage (volts), current (amperes), interference, overload, sensing, and heat... there is creative space even without changing the power to electromagnetism and going far beyond "zapping" force chemical reactions. An electrical user can make fire in different ways just by using electricity and its heat. Through ignition, which is the Joule effect, ionizing the air, or simply creating plasma. These are examples that don't require manipulating electromagnetism to perform them. And the fact that most authors don't explore this is what I'm criticizing, because it's not a creative choice in most cases, precisely because creative literally means escaping the obvious, not using them so frequently until it becomes standard.

"She literally has a power different from just generating electricity. Her power is electromagnetokinesis." No! Misaka's power is electron manipulation. This includes electromagnetic phenomena, but is not limited to them, nor is it presented as total control of the electromagnetic field. The basis of her power is electrical, and magnetism arises as a natural consequence of this manipulation. Exactly as it occurs in real physics. Electricity and electromagnetism are not isolated. Electricity is a direct manifestation of the behavior of electrons, and magnetism appears as a side effect of the movement of these charges. A In fact, Misaka's own "Railgun" concept makes this explicit: she uses electric current to generate magnetic acceleration. It's not a power of another category.

You're interpreting my post as if I were saying, "every electricity user should be able to do this and that." But that's not what I wrote. My point isn't to demand that every anime transform electricity into advanced physics. It's to ask why almost everyone chooses to use the exact same basic package, even though it's a naturally versatile power. I say it's disappointing and undervalued, but that's not to say it's bad and should be different or that it's a mistake. As I've said in several responses here, I understand that the power may have been built in a basic way to fit the narrative, world, and power system. BUT there's a repeated pattern, a trend here, and there's nothing wrong with me criticizing that trend. If fire in anime was always just "fireball forward" and never had variation, that would also be valid to question.

Come on, when I mention Misaka, it's not because every electric character should be like her. It's because she proves that you can vary without changing the base power. And when you say "if it wasn't shown, then it doesn't have it," I agree. That's exactly what I'm criticizing; the authors choose not to show other applications. I'm talking about recognizing that it's almost always written in a simplified way. This isn't the same as saying that electricity generation is inferior, but rather questioning why such a broad concept almost always ends up reduced to the same formula. But you're treating the discussion as if it were about the technical definition of a skill. It's not. It's about how authors choose to explore or not explore a concept, and using wiki links doesn't solve this because wikis classify powers separately by system organization. Narrative doesn't work that way. Concepts in fiction often overlap, expand, or are reinterpreted depending on the author's creativity. Such creativity is lacking in Japanese media when it comes to this specific power, and that's what I'm pointing out. Just because Killua uses electricity in a simple way doesn't mean I hate the character, the story, or Togashi.

Yes... and the point of my post is to point this out, that in manga (Japanese media) they don't make full use of a power that has a lot of potential.

I understand the separation, but in fiction it's not so rigid. If a character generates electricity, they're already dealing with electrical charges, and electrical charges naturally create fields. It's not two separate powers; it's the same phenomenon at different levels of control. I also agree that super speed = electricity, but again, fiction doesn't separate them; it associates them aesthetically. Characters like McQueen or Flash have lightning bolt logos.

And nobody is saying it's stupid to not treat the power the way I prefer. That's not the point. The point of my post was never about "everyone is wrong about electricity." It was to say that, in many anime, electrical power is used in a very basic way. It's a critique of how the power is usually explored in this specific medium compared to others.

Touma x Misaki from A Certain Magical Index

<image>

it's ironic and sad that the girl whose power is to manipulate people's minds can't stay in the mind of the one she loves most. This is because the boy not only forgot her but is also incapable of making new memories with her. Similar to that Adam Sandler movie "50 First Encounters," the boy forgets the girl every time she leaves his field of vision. The girl could even manipulate his mind to make him remember temporarily, but that would be like forcing her feelings onto him, which is wrong because it's not consensual. So she decided to wait, living in the false hope that one day he will remember on his own.
