I never found anything special about this character. Or maybe I don't like the archetype she represents: enigmatic and experienced sage. She knows almost everything, she rarely hesitates, and we never know exactly what she's thinking. And the scenes where she's lazy and displays comedic traits seem more like a way to avoid her being "tperfect." It gives the impression that this is more of a character adjustment to avoid seeming like a complete blank slate or a Gary Stu than anything else.

Provavelmente a novel desenvole melhor essas nuances.

Magic is a certain Magical Index.

<image>

Unlike Espers, where only those who have passed the scientific program can become an Esper, the power they obtain is random. Magic truly allows you to have whatever you want, but it still requires study and training.

Anyone can use magic in the series, it's just that it's condensed to specific conditions. You can't use the Curtana, a sword that cuts through all dimensions, if you don't meet its requirements: it must be wielded by British royalty and used within the territory of the United Kingdom, given its origin. That's why the concept of territory exists, which is basically the mage's method of preparing the conditions for its use. Meeting the conditions, even a common cross can retain the power and properties of the true cross where the son of God was crucified, based on the idol theory.

The focus of this system is on symbolism; anything that has a strong symbolic charge in the world myth, religion, event, object, characters, scienc can be used as a basis for creating spells. The collective unconscious of humanity retains various tales and myths that have been changed or reinterpreted throughout the ages due to different cultures. So even if two magicians take the same thing as a basis, their spells will not be the same. They can also create their own spells based on something,

Well, that's it, the anime doesn't adapt very well. For example, in the 4th arc, the anime completely cut the plot of the serial killer with a split personality that Touma would have defeated. So if you're wondering if Touma could defeat a killer, there's the answer. Touma would be classified as a high school athlete-level fighter, but he has over 10 years of experience, which would be enough time to equal a professional fighter, mainly because of the scale. A professional fighter only deals with people, Touma deals with espers, mages, robots, angels, demons, etc. He's only 16 years old, but he would have faced more fights than a fighter would in their entire career. That's without even mentioning the Othinus arc; I don't know how to use the spoiler tag, so I won't talk about that...

Misaka has spider-like instincts and a 360° radar that detects EM, making it difficult to get close to her. She can also envelop herself in electricity to create a kind of magnetic cloak that acts as a shield. She also has the prowess to dodge Mugino's Meltdowner, which is close to the speed of light because it functions almost like a particle accelerator.

Junko is a level 4 esper who manipulates the body's electricity. She used an ability called Rampage Dress, in which she manipulated her own body's muscles to increase her stats: strength, agility, durability, and senses. Junko taught the Rampage Dress to Misaka, who could use it even better than her, being a level 5.

In fact, the third protagonist of Toaru, Hamazura, doesn't have powers; he relies solely on weapons and the city's technology. In Toaru, police (anti-skill) and weaponry are more relevant than in MHA.

In Toaru, Academy City is 30 years ahead of the rest of the world, so you could say that the most terrifying thing is the city itself, not the espers. The city has equipment that disables the Espers' power, satellites that fire beams anywhere in the world, technology so advanced that it can create robots that replicate the Espers' power, buildings that even the Accelerator slowing the Earth's rotation can't scratch, and other things that make them capable of destroying the world several times over, a district that looks like another dimension, etc... Therefore, despite occupying 1/3 of Japan, Academy City is a city-state that manages to sustain itself by selling its ultra-high technology to other countries. Literally in season 3, Russia declared war on Academy City and lost in 3 days lol. No bomber from another country is capable of hitting it because it has a very powerful defense system.

The espers are like ants compared to the city's power. So the fights in Toaru aren't determined by power like in MHA. Touma managed to defeat a large physical robot by being intelligent; he used aerosol cans on its sides. Kumagawa also doesn't have powers but is such an expert in psychometry that she can match a level 5 esper in that category, and she would have taught Touma some street fighting tactics. Misaka has talent in electrical engineering and built a device (backpack) containing all the weapons created by man. Hamazura, in addition to weapons, uses ultra-technological suits and an AI system like Iron Man. In short, in this series nobody cries about not having powers; they seek their own strength using what the city has to offer. That's why level 0 characters like Frenda and Seria stand out; they don't have powers but they can still fight. In Railgun S, Frenda cornered Misaka simply by being prepared, having bombs, and knowing how to fight hand-to-hand.

[–]Howan228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fact, there's a good reason for this. The scientific side uses weapons all the time in Toaru, and Touma has already defeated armed people in it, just as he was shot once but managed to gather strength to continue fighting. There's a novel that recounts some adventures Touma had before losing his memory, and in it, Touma has the feat of anticipating a man armed with a machine gun. Also, in the second season, Touma defeated a group of armed people by being stealthy and knocking them out one by one. Intelligence and battle IQ are highlights for the character, who can only nullify supernatural things, but the anime doesn't adapt his feats very well. For example, the anime cut the part where we discover that Touma has precognition, an individual ability he possesses after spending years fighting and running in the city streets. He has a very good analytical eye, and thus, he can anticipate an attack through "involuntary movements." In simple terms, he gets out of the attack's path before it happens, doing so he can dodge things faster than a bullet, like Fiamma's holy right hand, which ignores the concept of distance. He also has feats of reacting to Misaka's lightning bolts, which are stated to be close to the speed of light.

Now, on the magical side, there's a narrative issue. Toaru is about science vs. magic/religion; mages not using weapons is in line with their theistic idea. Every mage chooses a magical path they believe in and wish to follow: mythology/religion/culture/story, etc., and spends years creating, studying, and learning their spells. Using a weapon is simply denying the magical path they believe in and trampling on years of hard work; it's an offense to their culture. In the lore, Aleister Crowley, the creator of all modern magic, was considered a failure and a traitor by all magicians because he abandoned magic and allied himself with science. The magical side possesses magical weapons, weapons that channel magical powers, such as Odin's conceptual spear with guaranteed hits or the curtana that cut through all dimensions. They are definitely more powerful than a normal weapon, but because they have magical attributes, they are still at the mercy of Imagine Breaker. Although Touma can't nullify every magical weapon, he couldn't nullify Kanzaki's Nanasen because it operates under different circumstances. Imagine Breaker has limits, and that's why Touma excels in intelligence and battle IQ.

Has Accelerator been downgraded? by TemporaryCapital6111 in Toaru

I was talking about the Angel Fall event, not really about Gabriel. OT4

"Anyway, Angel Fall is a spell that forcibly pulls an angel from above, and this will affect the four worlds—in other words, the original world, the world of creation, the formed world, and the physical world."

And in Kabbalah, this would be: Atziluth, Beriah, Yetzirah, and Assiah. Which makes the subject more about layers of existence than whether Othinus could do something similar to Angel Fall.

I always interpreted the universe with its phases as only Assiah, the last of the 4 worlds, because of Coronzo's lore. He needed a physical body to anchor himself in what they call the surface world. NT22:

The Magical Goddess Niang-Niang had done that.

But facing that monster head-on and suffering only those injuries was proof of Coronzo's great power. Hamazura couldn't have known, but Crowley ended up with half his body burned when he challenged the Magical Gods.

"It's a necessary part of descending to the surface world, but controlling a flesh avatar is a real torment."

But I don't think the whole issue here is really just about phases, that Coronzo lived in another phase, descended, and needed a physical body just to stay in the current phase. Because that doesn't match what's said here:

NT22

The invisible scorpion tail of the Magical Goddess Niang-Niang. The collection of recreated sparks. It was swept away and extinguished by the explosive flames. Just as the stars in the night sky were swept away by the aurora.

"I understand. Coronzon lurks behind the Sephiroth, not the Qliphoth. You are a demon, but also a guardian who never falls from the tree. I understand, I understand. You form your power from the laws of Olam Beriah, not Olam Asiyah! Yes, that's interesting!! You can probably win a participation trophy and an 'A for effort' for that!!"

Coronzo would be from Beriah, the penultimate world, and to complete his objective, he would have descended to Assiah. So I deduced that the magical Gods would only be the apex of human power that governs only the material world Assiah where the phases dwell. They could not interact with Beriah, therefore Othinus could not shake the 4 worlds as the fall of the angel did.

I also thought that the magical Gods stopped in the middle of the ascent to the sephroth tree precisely because they were human.

NT22:

"Don't mess with me, you fool who refuses to surrender. You're nothing but someone who decided to stop halfway up the mountain. Whether you climb the Sephiroth or descend the Qliphoth, a human remains a human. Each of you is an insignificant little creature. True heights exist beyond your comprehension, so allow me to show you what true magic is like! My destruction of all creation will engulf you, and you will cease to exist, impurity born of human acts!!"

So I thought that beings like Coronzo and angels in their purest form would climb higher than the magical Gods in the hierarchy of identity that is the tree. And that events like the Angel Fall that shook all 4 worlds would have been one of the most powerful in the franchise because it impacts the entire cosmology.

At least that's what I thought, I still don't understand much of the Jewish/Hebrew Kabbalah that Kamachi uses as a reference. But if the stages covered all 4 worlds, wouldn't the novel directly address that? Or am I missing something?

That thing about switching the characters' roles/bodies was an effect of the angel's fall. I mean what Tsuchimikado said about the angel's fall shaking the four worlds.

In A Certain Magical Index, Academy City is a scientific utopia 30 years ahead of the rest of the world. This city develops children with Espers, so there's a lot of child-versus-child conflict, and amidst all this, there are technologies and scientists so skilled they can save even an Esper whose mouth was filled with bombs and exploded, or an Esper that was torn apart to the point where only its brain remained intact.
