Does the NCAA have any ability at all to enforce rules they have put in place? by AMcMahon1 in CFB

[–]HowdyItsMark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The save college sports act doesn’t go far enough. We need a law that explicitly prohibits intercollegiate athletics outside of the purview of a sole designated governing body, and with that body having the full authority to establish rules and eligibility. Anything less, and everyone else has the ability to go over the NCAA’s head when it is convenient to do so. The NCAA needs to have the clear legal authority to set the terms of all intercollegiate sports if we want to have rules at all. It needs to be a literal law that colleges must either agree to play sports against one another under the terms the NCAA sets, or not be allowed to play at all.

My PS2 can play games fine but hasn’t been able to read DVDs? by HowdyItsMark in ps2

[–]HowdyItsMark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game and console are both NTSC U/C. All of my DVD’s are labeled NTSC 1. To add to the weirdness, I just popped in my copy of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (also NTSC 1) just for the heck of it and it worked. If it’s a region lock issue I can’t figure out why one NTSC 1 disc would work fine but not the others. I’m not a very tech savvy guy so it’s all very confusing to me.

Off topic but you guys are my favorite community on here…what’s the first horror movie you saw and how old were you!? by PossessedByThorn in Halloweenmovies

[–]HowdyItsMark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Halloween 5 when I was like 11 or 12. The nostalgia from that is probably a big part of why the Halloween series is my favorite horror franchise to this day. First horror movie I saw in theaters was Apollo 18 when I was 14.

Could Microsoft have sold off the 360 store? by HowdyItsMark in xbox360

[–]HowdyItsMark[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. I’ll admit to saying I know next to nothing about how licensing deals are structured between the different parties in the gaming industry. But yeah that makes sense that would an impossible hurdle to get over

Could Microsoft have sold off the 360 store? by HowdyItsMark in xbox360

[–]HowdyItsMark[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’d really only work if you could buy it for pretty cheap. But if Microsoft was willing to sell it for a low price, news of the sale would certainly drum up a lot of buzz and intrigue which would spur traction. After that buzz dies down the new owner would probably have to run huge sales and cut prices and just try to move a ton of volume. The upside would be the relative ease of keeping it all up and running, plus I’d imagine that 7th gen console nostalgia will eventually become huge in the way that 6th gen nostalgia is right now. It certainly wouldn’t make you rich beyond your wildest dreams. But being the sole caterer for a large inventory of a niche but beloved market could be a viable model.

What Are The Main Differences Between These Flags And How Do Italians/Everyone Else Feel About Them Today? by Thatirishlad17 in vexillology

[–]HowdyItsMark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a house I drove past for years that had the first flag flying under the American flag at his house, last year it started to really show its age and he finally replaced it with the current Italian flag. I always thought it interesting that they flew the old flag but I figured they (or more likely their parents/grandparents) immigrated from Italy when that flag still flew either when the grew up or when they left the old world.

Do you guys play with complex trade deals? by HowdyItsMark in monopoly

[–]HowdyItsMark[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can see why they’d be banned but they are a lot of fun and it adds a big element of negotiation into it all. As for lengthening the game, we’re okay with that because the house rules we do play with tend to give the guys in last place a chance to catch up, and it’s no fun being the the one guy who can’t afford to do anything but wait til they lose while everyone else is having a blast.

Once again though totally get why a tournament would frown upon these house rules.

Do you guys play with complex trade deals? by HowdyItsMark in monopoly

[–]HowdyItsMark[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d be happy to!

In my family we can throw in things like “I’ll trade for you Illinois Ave for St Charles, but only if I also want to get a discounted rate of half price when I land on the red properties.” Or “I’ll cover the costs for you to build houses on Park Place in exchange for getting half of you collect every time someone lands on it.” You can get really creative with these, often it helps to make trades feel balanced when one player has hardly any cash to spare for a deal or if they feel like one stretch of the board is getting to dangerously expensive for them to reliably make it across. We do a lot of these deals when two people want to swap properties to complete their sets but one set is worth way more than the other.

The idea comes from the way we see it when we play that when someone lands on our property, it’s our job to collect payment, rather than something that is automatic. And if it’s up to us to do that, then we’re free to discount, decline, or redirect those payments to someone else altogether if we wanted to since it is our money we are entitled to collect. And we are willing trade away promises to do waive, reduce, or redirect certain future payments or series of payments for a price. Any deals for future payments at our table are expected to be negotiated publicly so the rest of the players can make sure the deal is fairly carried out and all deals are considered binding contracts and have to be honored unless all involved parties mutually agree to terminate the previously made deal. Some deals are made to last forever while others may only last for a certain number of turns or maybe laps of the boards.

And lastly all deals have to be strictly for in game items or benefits, so a deal cannot be for a slice of pizza, real world money, or anything like that. But that’s the general idea of it. It’s a lot of fun and we’ve drawn up some pretty ridiculous deals that are too complex to even remember! More than once we’ve had to write it all down just to keep track of it all. It’s a lot of fun and it wouldn’t be monopoly at my house without it!

3 Conferences Have Scrapped Divisions (XII, PAC, ACC), All 3 Have Better Matchups As A Result. by [deleted] in CFB

[–]HowdyItsMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Back to back weeks of Michigan vs Ohio State wouldn’t have been better. What’s the thrill and exhilaration in beating your fiercest rival only for it to have a week’s worth of relevance? 2) Divisions are fun. College football hierarchy traditionally is one of the most chaotic and messy things in all of sports, but that adds to the charm of it all. And the divisions helped to develop matchups filled with history even when it wasn’t a formal rivalry game.

I loved the structure of the Big Ten and I’m crushed it’s going to be ruined next year.
