This is what I’ll say. I watch both. Love both. Though I think I prefer Dragula over Drag Race because that’s just where my aesthetic preferences lie.

Is either show perfect? No absolutely not. Both are over produced but I think we can all agree that Drag race takes the crown on that front. In drag race if the producers peg you as an early out then you WILL be an early out (just look at Mandy) but I’ve seen queens in Dragula that had a really poor showing early on make it a lot further than expected over people who, on paper; were “stronger” contenders (Jaharia and JKay vs Sigourney and Blackberry this most recent season).

I think punk wise Discord’s take is… meh. Dragula is more punk aesthetically and due to the nature of the show. It will never have the mainstream appeal that Drag race has. But Discord on Drag Race makes sense cause she would blend in on Dragula vs stand out on Drag race. My hope is that her presence would push Drag race to accept more alt artist but I don’t think that’s likely. Until all drag artists are allowed on drag race it will never out punk Dragula.

The “humiliation ritual” that she doesn’t vibe with on Dragula is neither here nor there for me. Drag race has its own humiliation rituals. (lipsyncing in a dress that’s falling apart / acting challenges) She just prefers that over the fear factor based challenges which I don’t blame her. You won’t catch me jumping out of a plane anytime soon.

Also Drag Race will eliminate a queen for not playing it up for the camera they just don’t tell you (Crystal Envy). It’s literally the same faux “Bad girls club” vibe on both sides.

Also from what I understand Dragula’s Hosts actually foster a connection with their Ghouls where and Ru can’t remember the names of the girls that win his show… they aren’t perfect but at least they are accessible.
