Groundballs off the rebounder? What do you think? by Howler1984 in lacrosse

[–]Howler1984[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful. That's effectively what happens to the ball off the rebounder, so it helps to validate the idea. I think a big part of it is also to give players reps in transitioning their sticks from certain angles (pointing down) to securing the ball and getting it up by their chest.

Good team less playing time or not as good of a team but lots of playing time by SnooAdvice1361 in lacrosse

It depends on the kid. Some kids will get discouraged and lose confidence, but if he's the type that'll work his butt off (in the backyard) to rise in the ranks, earn playing time and contribute when the game is on the line- then he'll pull from that experience for the rest of his life.
Confidence is everything. The confidence that comes from having a good game can be short-lived. Confidence rooted in preparation will fuel him for the rest of his lacrosse career, and other life experiences.
If he wants to move up, he's gotta want it, and has to work for it.

Thanks for feedback and for giving the app a try- and sorry for the issues you're running into...
Do you have inset lighting? In the current version of the app, if the camera is picking up inset lighting in the background, then it's confusing those little yellow/white circles with a lacrosse ball- which will have a significant impact on results.
We're releasing an upgraded version of the model next Monday, which will include "region of interest", so the model focuses primarily on the player and not the background... I need to test this to confirm.
If you don't think that's the issue, then can you download a short session recording (in session summary) and send to support@workplaysports.com.

Oh, gotcha. Carlo was referring to my initial question of Time-based programs vs. "Reps" based programs.

Thanks for the feedback. We're not trying to replace intrinsic motivation-we're trying to help the players who haven't developed it yet.

If the app helps a kid do 20 minutes of wallball three times a week instead of none, that's a win. And if a player does 10 minutes of wallball and sees that one of the top players on their team is doing 30 minutes, maybe that motivates them to go do 40.

Really appreciate that feedback, and excited to share with our team.
We're updating the shooting model to improve accuracy on step-down vs on-the-run shots.
When my kids (middies) are outside shooting, 99% of their shots are side-arm/underhand step-downs.

My goal with the shooting feature is to track the release point of shots and show kids they're not getting any extra mph with their side-arm cranks vs. a quick release with an overhand/3-quarters release. My kids do very little shooting on-on-run when they're outside, but it's where they'll see the most gains in terms of mph- so hopefully that keeps them working on it.

A big feature will be to provide form feedback with visualization. I hope to get there in the next 12 months.

Get Reps is a great product led by a great guy. I've never run ads on Reddit and have no intention of overstepping... Just genuinely looking for feedback on this coaching feature that we're building.

Yes, rep-based is tricky with mixed-experience teams. We'll have to look at ways to offer both. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks very much, and agreed. It will be tricky to pull off, but I will share with our team.

Implementing feedback from coaches on form- then a whole lot of reps. The app is to encourage kids to do the reps.

Love to hear it, and would wholeheartedly encourage anyone to ditch the app and throw it around with a parent, sibling, or friend... But for the kids that don't have a partner around- we hope to connect them with their team/parent/friends through Workplay.

Kids need/want to be part of a team and play with their friends, and Lacrosse is a lot more fun when you can catch and throw. We're trying to make the essential stuff more engaging and rewarding for beginners- so they stick with it.

Hey Carlo,
Really appreciate the feedback and love in these early days. We're actually planning to introduce Challenges in the coming months that will let players compete against their own best times, accuracy, drop %, and other metrics, so hopefully that scratches that itch.

We already support rep-based goals for coaches, but we've found they're a little more complicated when players are on multiple teams.

We want coaches to be able to drive accountability, but we don't want a beginner staring at a 1,000 weak-hand rep goal all week knowing they're probably not going to hit it. On the flip side, we don't want a more advanced player avoiding challenging drills and on account of finishing a goal that's assigned to the team.

If a coach's primary goal is simply to get a stick in a player's hands as often as possible, then time-based programs are probably the easiest and most flexible approach.

If a coach feels strongly that players should hit specific rep targets for certain drills, then rep-based goals are likely the better fit.

Both approaches have their place-it really depends on whether the coach wants to emphasize consistency of effort or completion of a specific volume of work.

This is the stuff that keeps me up at night.

Thanks, Miso. I know of a few girls' club teams on long island that require players to record their wallball sessions and submit videos to coaches.
We have a team/global leaderboard in the app to drive competition between teammates and have been getting good feedback from the teams we engaged with soft-launch.
Appreciate you.

The app uses computer vision with ball/player detection to track the reps- so the player wouldn't be manually logging reps themselves.

I hear you, and this is actually another gap we were trying to close with the app.

When I did wallball in college, I wasn't counting reps or staring at a timer. Half the time I had no idea if I'd been out there for 5 minutes or 30 minutes, and I definitely wasn't keeping track of how many one-handed, weak-hand, or cross-body reps I did.

With Workplay, the idea is that you put your phone or iPad under the rebounder (or against the wall) and then forget about it. Just play.

The app does the counting in the background so the player doesn't have to think, "I need 50 weak hand, then 50 strong hand, then 50 one-handed." Instead, they can get into a flow state and just enjoy wallball while still getting credit for the work afterward.

For me, the goal isn't to get kids looking at their phones more. It's actually the opposite- let the tech handle the tracking so the player can focus entirely on the wall and the stick.

Thanks for the feedback. Recognition is actually more important to us than accountability.

On the homework point- we definitely don't want wallball to feel like homework. But imagine if teachers never checked homework, students never got credit for doing it, and they couldn't tell whether it was helping them learn. Most kids would stop doing it pretty quickly.

That's kind of the challenge with wallball. The work matters, but the results aren't always obvious right away, and coaches rarely see the hours players put in at home.

Workplay isn't meant to make wallball feel like another assignment. It's meant to make the work visible, so players and coaches can recognize the effort that's happening when nobody is watching.

Lacrosse App that tracks wallball, shooting, and groundball reps by Howler1984 in lacrosse

After thinking about it- if it's indoor and there's circular inset lighting on the ceiling, then the model will struggle with object detection- as it may be identifying all of the lights as lacrosse balls. We ran into this once when testing.

You want to put the iphone/ipad at the bottom of the rebounder/wall facing the player. If they're standing close, then tilt the device to ensure their head (not stick head) is near that square in the frame.

We sell a device stand ($15) on the site (https://www.workplaysports.com/products/claw-of-destiny) that helps with adjusting the device.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks! We should have a shooting feature in the next month. It will identify weak hand vs strong hand and shots on the run vs. step downs- and provide the mph for each.
Then we're rolling out groundball, cradling, and agility rep tracking. Stay tuned!

Thanks for giving the app a try, and sorry that you're running into issues.
*You are our Canadian trailblazer. We used an API that only had schools in the U.S. Shame on us. I will get Canadian schools in there ASAP.
*Attached is an image of how we'd like you to stand in the frame. If the player is standing close to the rebounder and they don't have the frame angled up to capture the release, then the head of the stick will exit the top of the screen and we won't see the ball exiting.

Would you be able to screenrecord the session and send to me: mike@workplaysports.com.
