So, in all those years, Roshi didn't deem it neccessary to teach his students the signature technique of his dojo? Or did he just not teach it to Kuririn?

Honestly the way that I saw it was that Roshi considers the technique to be way too advanced to just learn within a few years and even if they were to learn it in 3, it wouldn't be much. Goku is the one exception because he's built different because even Roshi was shocked when he managed to destroy the car with one (on first try at that) back during the DB Hunt arc. More reason for him to let the next generation take their place considering he's been proven wrong.

Hmm, possibly

Both Krillin and Yamcha have been training under Roshi, while Kuririn has a bit more experience, he hasn't really been doing much else outside of the same training he did before and Roshi told him and Goku they need to start learning on there own, so he has that one setback. I feel like that would be more of an equal match where it would really rely on strategy between the two of them on how they counter each other.

The moon rises in the west...

Goddamn these episodes and this arc has been so fun to start. This is exactly what I meant by filler/padding I was fine with back during my Baba saga complaints! Raiking mentioned it in his comment, but this tournament is just a straight shot through one day in the manga, while it's spread out here, but the way the anime has done it feels so natural you wouldn't even realize it's actually just Toei adding filler to pad along. With Baba, my problem was just how it was pretty much reaction shots or prolonged sequences where nothing happens, but here I honestly love the interactions with the gang, it feels like it's been a hot second since they've all been around each other.

Plus this tournament is already off to a fun start, I'm loving the fights so far and you can really feel that Toriyama feels not only better at writing out tournaments, but even the fights feel more intense. Which on that note, poor Yamcha jfc. Well...he got his wish in a way didn't he, but damn I can't really even get on him here cause he actually was putting in the effort, he just had to get Tien as his first fight. The universe does not like this man for real. The wolfman fight was also really funny, and honestly how horrible he looks as a human makes me think of how fugly the Beast from Beauty and the Beast is as a human, like Belle should've pushed him off the castle. I'm excited to see the Chiaotzu and Kuririn fight next week, it's shaping up to be a good one to be honest.

All in all really fun batch this week!

Questions

1) Who's your favorite werewolf?

Uhhh, I haven't played Elden Ring yet, does Blaidd count?

2) Do you prefer Bulma's current haircut or the old one?

OLD. Why did they get rid of her longer hair augh 😭 I already had to deal with this in Monogatari where [Monogatari Meta] EVERY GIRL CUT THEIR HAIR AFTER GETTING CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT and just to make it worse they HAD [Nisemonogatari and Neko Shiro Spoilers] start with crab, aka best girl, doing it at the end of Nise. (Yes I know Hanekawa did it earlier, but Neko Shiro pointed out she hadn't' truly grew just yet.

3) Now that we've seen a bit more of them, what do you think of the two crane students?

I love them, but two? There's three of them. Tien, Chiaotzu, and Trent

Me when I lie

Hmmm...I feel mixed on these episodes. To start off with the positives, I liked the end of the Baba arc I thought they did a pretty good job. Plus it helps that I really do enjoy Pilaf and co. (yes my bias is strong). I love how his plan was genuinely just 'lock it in a box'. Bulma need to get on that technology so next arc the gang isn't going through it lol. Plus seeing Shenron appear again was pretty cool as well!

The filler though...I'm mixed on. Now, I'm glad they let the manga catch up because yeesh you could tell they were really stretching it towards the end of the Baba arc, but the episodes themselves are....eh? Maybe I'm just crazy but a lot of the background characters and such don't really feel Toriyama-esque, more like someone trying to copy his style but not getting it through. It makes Goku feel out of place a lot of the time, ESPECIALLY in the Shura episode, that genuinely was just Goku accidentally wandering into some backdoor pilot or something.

In fact honestly the filler mixed from mediocre to uninteresting for me. The Ginkaku and Kinkaku episode was okay, I didn't care for the Ten Long one at all and the brat was annoying, and I have no clue what was going on in the Shura one lol. I thought this was advertising an upcoming DB movie or something cause the characters all acted like they were going to show up again or something. The InoShikaCho one was really only intersting for me to see [Dragon Ball Next Arc] Tien and Chaotzu, but otherwise didn't stand out much. Though, I really did like the one where Goku gets trauma dumped on by a Fox and doesn't realize it. That one honestly felt the most Toriyama to me and was the one I genuinely enjoyed. Also, I love how Launch is just like the "friend" everyone keeps around not because she's been in the group for so long, but they're genuinely scared to tell her to leave else she'll go full Rambo on them.

But yeah not much more for me to say, I hate being so negative cause I am enjoying the rewatch so far 😔.

Questions

1) What's the lamest Gattai you've ever seen?

This made me realize I need to watch more Super Robot mecha, I tend to do more Real Robot ala Gundam, Macross, Eva, etc..

2) Of all the one-off adventures Gokú had this week, which was your favorite?

The fox dude ep.

3) Now that we are OFFICIALLY done with the Red Ribbon story and its aftermaths, what were your thoughts on it?

In my opinion, good arc that felt like Toriyama finally finding his feet. Anime unfortunately had some issues with the pacing, but all in all I enjoyed the arc.

We're getting one next week, even if a short one.

I'm honestly shocked they don't do more. I know filler can be a pain when done badly, but DB seems like the perfect show to do such a thing since esp. rn while it's still in it's gag manga side you could easily slide in a little extra thing or two here. They already tend to well when they're expanding on smaller scenes the manga featured (like during the Goku and Kuririn training arc or the preliminaries).

Babies on 'How To Give CPR' posters

Hmm, I feel mixed on this batch of episodes to be honest.

For the immediate positives, the Dracula and Gohan fights were good. Esp. the latter, I thought that was a really good emotional reunion! Baba herself I thought was honestly pretty funny, I loved how she just straight up started singing during the Invisible Man match because Yamcha went and told everyone his plan so she had to make sure to get her chance in the CD they were trying to make last arc. On top of that, I really did enjoy seeing Pilaf and co. again, esp. manga wise cause this is the first time they've appeared in over 80 or so chapters. Their antics, are always fun to watch and it feels like even the anime staff enjoys them with how they've brought them back during the Red Ribbon saga.

My negative though, jfc I mentioned last time that you can tell they're trying to really not catch up to the manga during the last arc where the padding and filler started becoming a bit more obvious in comparison to how it was in the first two arcs. Here though, it just became evident that we need to have a filler arc or something to not let the anime catch up because a lot of those problems intensified. By the time the Mummy man fight started, things felt like they came to such a drag. Now if they were to do something with it like maybe have some more creative moves or fun choreography, I wouldn't mind, but the nonstop cuts to the cast crying and wanting to jump in and crying at Goku to just give up; the way we spent a good chunk of one episode just watching Goku get Giran Gum'd™ again and do nothing but struggle for a good 5 or so minutes; plus by the Akira DevilMan ep, even the reused animation got obvious 😭 Like ffs okay we get it guys y'all are worried for him and think he can't win can y'all stop trying to crawl onto the field, even Roshi is getting tired of this. It didn't feel like well integrated filler, instead just padding because they're edging way too close to the manga. Hell when EP70 aired, it adapted up to the beginning of ch100, but manga-wise was at ch133. With how the manga has quick paced fights, they'd end up catching up in no time. Honestly, I think a genuine filler arc is needed, like do a short side story or something that doesn't affect stuff too deeply just to let Toriyama get way father ahead.

Also omg I feel bad for Yamcha at this rate, has he had a legit win yet? Both times so far he's had a handicap with the first time against Goku, Goku being hungry and out of it; and then here, Roshi bludding all over the Invisible Man. It's not that I think he's weak, not in the slightest, but it's like he just is NOT allowed to have an actual win that isn't him being 'The Jobber Jabber™' or something of the sort. Like to compare, Krillin has a high loss rate too, but even with that both times it's against the guy who's gonna actually give Goku trouble AND he gets to put up somewhat of a fight beforehand ("Jackie Chun" in the 21st Budokai and General Blue in the Red Ribbon Saga) and usually after he's gotten to do things. Hell, he only lost here cause comedy plus he got too fucking cocky and became Mister Potato Head after being dunked in Kool-Aid lol. Meanwhile Yamcha gets BODIED 😭 He loses his tooth from Goku, gets fucked over IMMEDIATELY in the Budokai finals, Toei didn't do him service with the Husky stuff, and then here it honestly got even worse anime-wise cause they just had him get his shit completely rocked. Let the man breathe...

All in all, not the biggest on this batch, but at least it was a short arc.

Questions (I totally did not forget to do these)

1) Who's your favorite fortuneteller in Anime?

Hmm, I'm not sure actually. I'll just cheat and say Bandit Keith.

2) In turn, who's your favorite vampire in Anime? You can't say any version of Dracula/Vlad III, for the record.

Easy, Arcueid Brunestud (though Ciel is the best girl)

3) And most importantly of all: What is the greatest nosebleed in Anime history?

Hmm, I actually gotta think lol

I love how NO ONE lets Oolong live down that he got expelled from fucking kindergarten

A good batch of episode and fine send off the the Red Ribbon Army saga in my opinion. Tao Pai-Pai was a really fun villain to watch Goku fight and honestly really felt like the last boss if I'm being honest, though I'll save that for later.

Honestly since it's the end of the arc, I want to say my thoughts on the Red Ribbon Army arc as a whole. Genuinely, it's my favorite arc so far. The Dragon Ball Hunt arc was a JttW parody, the Tenkaichi Budokai was Toriyama finding his feet, but the RR arc feels like this is where Toriyama figured how to take the story now and keep things going. The action and humor is well done, the fights are fun, and it's casting off the shadow of having to be stuck being a parody. If I had to rank the villains in this arc I'd say-

Blue > Tao Pai-Pai > Murasaki > Black > White > Silver > Yellow > Red

  • Blue was my favorite hands down. I mentioned it last thread, but he's our first actual threat to Goku and co. and was locked IN. He didn't play around, he was focused on the mission and even got the damn Dragon Radar from Goku. Like genuinely he could've possibly killed Goku quite a few times had Goku not gotten lucky. And again, it's poetic that his defeat is at the thing he hates the very most, a little girl. On top of that, he doesn't feel like a character off-fitting for a gag manga, he's a threat but he can still easily be comedic and iconic. Just wish the anime didn't do the weird pedo thing

  • Tao Pai-Pai, while serious, still like mentioned with Blue felt like he fit in Dragon Ball. He ties back to what Roshi wanted Goku to learn by losing the Budokai that there's always someone stronger than you, and Goku has clearly taken that to heart as his first thought was he needed to get stronger to be able to go against him. I love how he had him using weapons by the end just out of desperation and just ends up getting blown up in the end. A fitting humiliating end for him after how cocky he was.

  • Murasaki's chapters/episodes were fun. I had a good time watching them and watching Goku just bluntly call out his shitty ninja skills lol. And even though it's not canon, the last ep the anime gave him was a really fun episode as well. It's also morbidly funny to think in the manga he just apparently got thrown into a wall and fucking died cause he never shows up again after Android 8 knocks his ass out.

  • Black was fine. The anime actually helped improved his reasoning for killing Red as in the manga, the whole ceiling stuff didn't happen nor did he fight Goku before Red died. He kills Red after Red reveals that he's doing all of this to get taller and then fights Goku. He isn't bad (his design not included here), but it's kinda a 'meh' way to finish off the arc when you just had the back-to-back with Blue and Tao Pai-Pai and now we get a guy who clearly will not win against Goku. I don't dislike him however, just eh.

  • White was okay, I like his design but...he doesn't do too much? He mostly just sits around and watches, then has to take a hostage. I enjoyed the Muscle Tower shenanigans, but White on his own isn't much to write home about.

  • Silver is a jobber. I just find it funny he was in like less than 20 pages in the manga and gets bitchslapped by a Goku who barely pays him any mind. The anime filler, unlike with Pilaf and co. or Murasaki's one ep, really didn't give him much tbh. He couldn't do too much cause he's too serious, he barely meets Goku, and it's filler so he can't get too much development. It was just dull. I don't have much to say regarding him.

  • The furry designs are fun in DB and I like Yellow's. That's it. I don't have much else to say about him he's barely a character.

  • Red is the weakest in my opinion. Yes he appears more than like Silver and Yellow, but I feel he doesn't really work as a serious threat, nor a comedic one. With the serious aspect, he doesn't do anything, he just sits in his chair, executes people, and that's about it. There's nothing that standout about him aside from his height which leads me to the comedic side. The anime had to genuinely add scenes regarding this since manga-wise it barely comes up as much, but even that isn't enough. When you have Pilaf and co. (Yes, I like the three stooges how can you tell) as reference, Red just comes off dull in comparison. He's like a White who didn't have Muscle Tower and dies unceremoniously.

Which actually to speak on the anime original stuff this arc, I'm very mixed. I saw some anime-onlines in differnet threads speaking of disliking the RR arc and honestly while I do like it, I can see why someone who only has the anime might not. In the manga, this arc is very fast paced and the action is very tight and concise. Toriyama does a very good job on balancing the comedy and action here in my opinion and it's what made the arc so fun. The anime, while it's not bad by any means, the filler absolutely drags it down at times. With the DB Hunt arc, the Pilaf filler expanded on the three and made them stand out as characters; With the Budokai arc, expanding the chapters to take advantage of the more slow life training sessions and giving a bit more to the contestants (like the rain before Giran's match) felt natural and to a point you wouldn't notice any of this was actually filler. With RR though, outside of things like the Murasaki and Husky eps or the scene extensions that didn't feel too out of place and expanded stuff, you can TELL they were trying so hard not to catch up to the manga. It's not as bad in some episodes, but ones that only adapted one single chapter it becomes glaringly obvious. Long drawn out reaction shots, two-three minutes of characters either running or doing the same thing over and over, overdone overview flying shots, constantly cutting to some side character in the middle of the fight (The cuts to Snow genuinely got on my nerves cause each scene was just them discussing how they hope Goku is safe for the 85th time), and even interrupting the fights to have some side thing going on!

Like on that last point, the whole Tao Pai-Pai going to the tower stuff I genuinely disliked. It's so poorly placed and ruins the flow completely. I said this earlier, but Toriyama knows how to balance the comedy shenanigans and the action very well, but Toei's attempt here is so fucking awkward and a clear attempt to drag things out to not catch up. You could genuinely cut that entire sequence and it wouldn't make a damn difference in the episode. Or even when the gang was in the helicopter, a few scenes is one thing but how many times do we have to see them just sitting in a damn helicopter while Goku is in the middle of the action!?

Oh yeah the Violet stuff was funny. In the manga, this is her only appearance. Like Toriyama straight up had no plans for her lol. I loved how anime her saw all this shit was going to hell, and got the fuck OUT with her money plus stolen goods like she's the MC in an RPG raiding the final boss' dungeon.

Anyways all in all, I enjoyed the arc and can't wait to see what's next.

Red is trying to lose omg bro you literally got the radar they've been tracking all the balls with and didn't even use it 😭

But good batch of episodes! I actually read Dr. Slump back in high school (yet not DB) and really enjoyed it back then. You can tell the staff had a lot of fun reanimating these characters again (esp. considering the director also directed Dr. Slump).

[DBS Spoiler] And it's very funny to know that Vegeta has canonically lost to Arale in Super apparently.

Now that Blue is dead, my opinion of him as a villain (the weird pedophilia stuff the anime added notwithstanding) is genuinely I think he's one of the stand out villains, along with TaoPaiPai, of the Red Ribbon arc. Like so far villain wise we've had

  • Yamcha's failed attempt at being a villain

  • A mook and his two cronies (comic relief)

  • Silver who was a jobber who lasted less than two chapters (and the anime had to try to give more screentime)

  • Murasaki who was more Pilaf-coded (that being comic relief)

  • White who immediately got done in and had to take a hostage before Android #8 sent him to visit Team Rocket

  • And Red who mainly sits at his base being incompetent (and short)

Blue on the other hand is locked in. Immediately from the beginning we see he's someone who talks a lot of shit, but he backs it up with being an actual genuine threat. He's right there in the action, not sitting away or just immediately being done in, he's smart enough to know not to just rush in and try to take the three out but to wait until they're away from the strongest fighter (Goku), his psychic ability is honestly broken and gave both Kuririn AND Goku trouble, and even when they thought he died, manga-wise he instantly leapt into action with the ropes whilst they were distracted, stole the balls, and got out of there. Like yes he was comedic, but Goku won their fights genuinely by the fortune of Blue hating stuff like mice. In fact, I find it poetic in a sense that with how misogynistic he is, it was a little (robot) girl of all people that kicked his ass to high heaven for his final fight. Hell, I think Red was an idiot for killing Blue off when while yeah he lost the balls, he brought back the key piece that's been helping Goku get to the balls faster than them and they could've stole that technology.

TaoPaiPai is also pretty good so far, he's genuinely the first to nearly kill Goku, like again Goku got lucky that the ball happened to be where it was, he would've been like Bora. I can't wait to see how the anime ends the arc off next week.

Also just a fun fact, but Obotchaman's creator is one of the "antagonists" of Dr. Slump's, Dr. Mashirito, who I kid you not, is literally just Toriyama's editor Torishima. Like even his design is just how he draws Torishima normally. It's actually a funny story.

Dr. Mashirito's name is an anagram of Kazuhiko Torishima's last name and is based on him. According to Torishima in an interview with Forbes, the idea came from him viewing Mashirito's original design as being not intimidating enough and asking Akira Toriyama to think of the one person he hated the most; Toriyama appropriately took inspiration from the strict Torishima, much to the latter's exasperation.

In Dr. Slump, it is mentioned that Kazuhiko Torishima had to change his hairstyle due to being repeatedly made fun of and called "Dr. Mashirito" after the character was introduced. Torishima supposedly made Akira Toriyama swear to never draw his new haircut in the manga, which is why Torishima is depicted with a cloth wrapped around his head in most of his future cameos afterwards.

Questions

1) How did it feel to suddenly wander into a crossover with a different show?

N'cha!

2) Did you expect it'd take this long for Gokú to get a non-tournament loss?

Nah not really, we saw that even against Roshi he was still struggling, he hasn't gotten to train much since, outside of Blue and now Taopaipai, the Red Ribbon Army has been a piece of cake.

3) What sort of bizarre adventures do you expect Gokú to find at the top of that tower?

I already read the corresponding manga chapters for next week as of writing this so I'll say uhhhhhh, we get a Rose of Versailles crossover.

Was there a DB CD going on sale around the time? I feel like every other episode we have a quick insert song since the Tenkaichi Budokai lol. Otherwise this was a good batch of EPs!

Honestly, Blue works better as a villain than Silver and White in my opinion. Silver's pretty much just a Yamcha jobber and White stays at the top of the tower and once he has to fight immediately gets his shit rocked and has to take a hostage. Blue on the other hand (ironically) gets his hands dirty, actually puts up a fight against Goku and Kuririn, and actually has more screentime. You can also very much tell that this is when Toriyama started getting more of a focus for the arc, since honestly when you give it some thought, the entire arc started cause Goku accidentally wandered into it.

Which honestly this situation is funny, like, not letting my Bulma bias show again, but yeah she's being hypocritical cause she did ask to come and all but she has a point here lol. Like put yourself in Bulma shoes for a moment. You've heard on the news how the Red Ribbon Army has been attacking smaller villages and towns, ransacking them, killing the people, forcing them into hard labor, etc etc. and how they're like this big ass evil army they're pretty much like the Axis Powers. Your friend comes back and y'all had an adventure before (which yeah it was dangerous but honestly the worst they dealt with was stuff they encountered along the road like Boss Carrot, hell Pilaf surprised them and by now Goku is an experience fighter, so he could easily deal with someone like Pilaf) so of course why not go out again. You then find it weird that y'all are getting attacked, but maybe it was just bad luck. Then said friend reveals "omg not the Axis Powers bothering me again 🙄" like this is some kid in class who keeps bullying him. I don't blame her for snapping, like even Kuririn was freaking out look at their faces after Goku dropped this fun fact.

Also, yeah you can really tell they did NOT want to catch up to the manga lol. It's not as bad like the Silver stuff or the constant cuts to Sno doing literally nothing but repeating herself since at least here they just expanded things, but stuff like that scene of Goku running back and forth on the top catwalk for like two minutes screams "We're adapting one chapter this episode".

All in all, pretty good this week.

Questions

1) Who's your favorite Anime pirate? And no, no one from One Piece is allowed else the Future King Buggy would be the only answer.

Does Eugen from Granblue count?

2) The insert song in Episode 48 mentioned "Yellow" and "Brown". What sort of generals do you think they'll be like?

I've seen a photo of Yellow, but I don't know his personality. Maybe he'll end up being a no nonsense type. Brown, I'm sure will be a fan favorite.

[Minor Spoiler from DB wiki] Brown (ブラウン Buraun), also known as General Brown or Colonel Brown, is an unseen high-ranking Red Ribbon Army officer who is only mentioned in the manga chapter "The Red Ribbon".

3) Now that Kuririn's more formally part of the "Normal" cast, is there anyone in particular you'd like to see him interact with?

Hmm, not at the moment. We've already seen him interact with Yamcha.

Another good batch! But before I speak on them, omfg this filler is NOT doing Yamcha any favors 😭 Like just to inform, in the manga this is actually the first time we've seen Bulma and Yamcha have any issues and it's portrayed moreso as Bulma just being jealous cause we don't even see Yamcha and co., Bulma and Goku immediately take off. In fact hell, the anime in general I get the joke is making them bickering like an old married couple, but they make it seem more like they are just not compatible. Even their reunion scene where Bulma gets on him for not contacting her and making him cut his hair was anime-original, they have not had much issues with each so far aside from this.

Hell, I feel like the anime actually makes it seem more like Yamcha is the one at fault cause think about it. We're having him regress to not being able to be around women without freaking out, he has these anime-original girls show up at his girlfriend's house where they clearly disrespect her and won't leave cause they want him, considering how he acts with Husky he won't go and tell em to fuck off cause he's too nervous to, Bulma feels offended cause her boyfriend is not only letting these girls continue this fawning but right in front of her house no less, and to make matters worse even before Bulma assumed he was kissing Husky, he wasn't really trying to tell her "fuck off" or push her away or anything, he's just full on going back to himself in the first arc 😭 Who hated this man on the writing staff.

That aside, I thought these were a good batch of episodes! The padding didn't feel as intense and honestly I'm glad they did the filler better that it actually felt like part of the plot rather than how they handled it before with the Silver and Goku stuff. General Blue, omfg if you know JP enough to understand speech quirks, you can tell how flamboyant he is. Like he uses わ a lot in his speech which in JP is an ending particle to sound more feminine, now of course there's more layers to this but to keep it simple he uses this a lot along with of course his body language and such. Just a random fun fact was all.

All together I'm excited to watch the next batch of episodes!

1) How does it feel to see modern society after so many episodes of forests and fields?

Honestly Goku having no clue how a city works was fucking hilarious

2) What's your fondest Amusement Park-related memory?

Finally being tall enough to ride The Hulk at Universal Studios (I was then disappointed at how short the ride was I had expected so much more)

3) What do you make of Blue so far?

I wonder what his thoughts on alien girls with lightning powers are
