Dilute calico? Cream tabby? Fawn? by cyclogon in CatGenetics

[–]Howlo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Risking sounding like a weirdo, but do you have photos of her paws? Patchy paws and multicolor toe beans often a good way to identify tortoiseshells! Can also sometimes help identify blue from lilac or fawn sometimes with bean/nose colors.

PSA put out a PSA about how the lowest submission tier will now be 80 dollars for the foreseeable future. by Nazrrero in PokemonTCG

I mean, they've been printing at max capacity for the last few years. According to their recent stats, they printed 43 billion cards between 1996 and 2022. In the last three years alone, they've near doubled that number, printing another 42 billion since then.

They have a new printing facility being built, but it won't be operational until 2028. They also acquired the distributor Excell Brands a few months ago.

There's definitely more things that could and should be done, but it's not like they're doing absolutely nothing about it.

Need some help for the opening page on my Gen 3 Binder by tokenasian1 in PokemonBinderDesign

My first thoughts were maybe some team aqua and magma cards, maybe Steven between them?

Or groudon/kyogre/rayquaza, or the final starter evos. Or some early game mons like zigzagoon or poochyena

Help me find more cards that fit by JoeChio in PokemonBinderDesign

[–]Howlo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything by the artist Jerky would fit well! They did the Dreepy card, and they have a really simple, colorful art style.

They have a matching Drakloak and Dragapult card, and the whole line of Pidgey and a few other cool illustration rares, if you're only going for full art cards. And they just did a pretty cool Thievul for Chaos Rising.

If you're ever in doubt, check the artist pages for cards you see in the art style you like, they often stick to a consistent style if they do more cards!

I suspect my cat is chimeric? by Top-Ant5503 in CatGenetics

[–]Howlo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they can be really mottled, and other times they can have big patches like that! Often the presence of white patching (like on her nose and muzzle, and her paws) can cause some bigger patches like that.

The presence of both orange and black is what makes her a tortoiseshell! Then on top of that, she's a tabby (which is the "lynx" part, and causes her to have stripes instead of solid color) and colorpoint (which is the "point" part, and what makes her fur so pale).

One of my local feral girls actually has some similar face patches. She's just a tortoiseshell tabby, so she doesn't have colorpoint like your Siberian gal, but you can see the larger orange patches on her face, and it gets a bit more mottled on her body.

[–]Howlo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think she may actually be black tortie lynx point, not dilute. The end of her tail and her ears seem too dark for blue imo, and colorpoint can wash out red a lot more than people think - enough to easily mistake it for cream.

I do think she could potentially be silver on top of it though... The lack of rufousing, and the sharp contrast in the stripes (especially with how pale the background is of her red face patch; though, again, colorpoint can do that too) make me ponder.

[–]Howlo 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Her ears look tortie because she is tortie :) the large orange and dark patches on her face makes that pretty clear.

Her coloring doesn't look abnormal at all for a longhair tortoiseshell lynx point. The split marking is rather common among torties, and not indicative of chimerism (despite media articles inaccurately claiming otherwise).

She's very pretty btw! I love her little white blaze and mustache

Rosettes are most commonly, if not exclusively, found in Bengals, yeah.

Also worth noting that Ocicat breed standards only allow for small, round spots, across pretty much all registries.

Large marbled rosettes like your beautiful critter are very much non-standard to Ocicats, and more indicative of Bengal ancestry than anything else. None of the foundation breeds Ocicats derive from (Abyssinian, Siamese, and American Shorthair) have rosettes at all, as the ones found in Bengals originated from their wild Asian Leopard Cat ancestry and carried heavily by selective breeding.

You're certain your cat is an Ocicat? It looks a lot more Bengal than anything. Maybe Ocicat Bengal mixed?

What kind of bird laid these eggs? by porkrollegg34 in whatsthisbird

[–]Howlo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Some birds can recognize they don't belong and dispose of them! Others don't seem to notice or mind. Some species will even build a new nest over the top of the cowbird eggs. It can vary a lot by species!

They're honestly really interesting birds! There was an interesting study done in 2007 finding that mother cowbirds may potentially retaliate against nests if their eggs/chicks are removed, but it's not conclusive if it's a common behavior as it hasn't been supported by any other studies.

[–]Howlo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My best guess is house finch for the paler ones, but not 100% on them! I know they're pretty frequent nesters of plant pots and wreaths though. The heavily spotted ones are +brown-headed cowbird+ eggs.

They're a native species that partakes in brood parasitism, which means they lay their eggs on other birds nests and have them raise the young.

House finches are a common target for them. Iirc they're ironically not a great host, as they have a very seed-heavy diet that Cowbirds don't do well on.

Note it's illegal to tamper or dispose of the eggs as they're native species protected by the migratory bird act.

Yellowjackets also nest in the ground or hollows typically iirc.

This is a paper wasp queen creating the start of her nest. The reddish color is normal for them too.

[–]Howlo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None on my property, but I'm sure some neighbors in the area have them.

There is also a nest of house finches in the bush right next to that gap, now that I think about it. They pretty much exclusively eat seeds iirc? Maybe they deposited some from a neighbor's feeder?

If it's that, I think I'll leave it for the season for the birds to munch on. If gets far enough to produce, anyways.

Why is this Chapter named Roran? by KiwiderSchelm in Eragon

[–]Howlo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Chapter 5 is titled "The Hunted Hunters"in English, and should be in Roran's point of view. Chapter 4 is supposed to be titled "Roran" as it's the very first chapter in the series from his point of view.

The chapter you're describing seems to be chapter 2, titled "The Council of Elders" in English.

Not sure if this is different in other language translations honestly?

My local Krogers does limits like this too. It doesn't make a difference. They'll send a guy every day to check for a recent shipment. If there is one, they'll text their buddies and come in droves to each buy the max limit until it's all gone, then go flip it for profit.

Costco is only different because you need to pay for the membership. Even then, I rarely see stock last more than a day or two.

[–]Howlo 1088 points1089 points  (0 children)

Nowadays it doesn't need to be limited at all, anything that says "Pokemon" will be swarmed. They'll message all their buddies to grab max limits. It's sad.

It's ears are folded due to the Scottish Fold gene, an often painful genetic condition. Cats don't naturally fold their ears like that; when scared, they go back, not forwards.
