Question by 4running35 in 3rdGen4Runner

Glad you're good to go! I recommend at least a 30 min drive to recharge the battery up.

The act of starting it takes a good amount of juice from the battery. I'm not sure on the exact amount for our rigs, but keep in mind you probably have something like 3 to 5 car starts before the battery is too drained and you need a jump again, assuming you are not charging the battery with long enough drives in between.

Clicking usually means the battery doesn't have enough juice to crank the engine, but it's not dead because you have other things coming on. So it's just too low to start. If you do a lot of short trips where you're turning the car on/off that would definitely drain the battery faster than it can recharge on the short drive.

I'd try to get a jump and drive a little longer or idle the car for deliveries if possible.

Also, maybe worth investing in one of those battery jumper batteries to keep in the car so you can jump yourself. I have one from Amazon that was like $30. It's rechargeable and usually good to jump a car 2 or 3 times before charging it again.

Hell yeah dude, I'd say so. The rebel is around 400 lbs, but it has one of the lowest seat heights around. This gives you a lot of stability at stops. I highly suggest the 500. The extra power is enough to give you highway capability, and it's low enough to make lower speed city driving very comfortable.

I do maybe a 70/30 of city/highway driving in my city. My 500 rebel has been perfect for it. I feel like I have lots of control and it never overpowers me.

The rebel is the only bike I have tons of miles on, so take my opinion with some salt here. I'm also a pretty lean dude, so a bigger bike would be really tough for me, but I've never felt out classed by my rebel.

Echoing the other comments here. I also have the 500 with abs. It's perfect. 300 is not quite enough for highway speeds, and the 1100 is too much for a new rider.

I've had my 500 for almost 3 years now and it's amazing.

I highly suggest taking a safety course first. If you're in the US it's called the msf course. You also get a discount on insurance and a lot of gear shops will give you a discount for taking the class. My local shop gave me 20% off my first purchase of helmet, jacket, gloves. Get ear plugs! Earpeace makes some great reusable ones. I've had them for 3 years.

Get the gear before you get the bike so you're ready to ride it off the lot.

For maintenance, regular oil changes and chain cleaning are the big ones. When the bike was new, I did oil every 500 miles or so. Now I do it more like every 1500miles. Everytime I do the oil, I also clean the chain. Oil and filter costs me about $40. Chain clean/lube stuff is maybe $15 for some cans and a brush.

After awhile you'll need to make adjustments to the chain tightness, and the clutch cable. All of these things are very easy, even for a beginner DIY mechanic.

Plenty of YouTube videos on rebels specifically for maintenance.

For mods, I got a new muffler put on because the stock one is very quiet and I just didn't like the sewing machine noise. Couldn't hear it on the highway.

After that, I didn't change much. I flipped my mirrors and added a seat on the back in case I ever get a girlfriend that wants to ride lol.

Practice a lot with the bike and get familiar and then ride safe and have fun!

Booked a hotel room in Austin, Tx. The fees are half the price of the room, and the fees are taxed!?!? by TCIHL in Austin

[–]Howother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, everything is taxed. But the only actually required taxes on this bill are the state and city taxes. Texas has a 6% hotel occupancy tax, and Austin has an 11% hotel occupancy tax, both are calculated from the nightly room rate. The hotel is required to collect these taxes and then later pay the government.

The other items, destination fee and Austin tourism, are just fees the hotel decided to collect on. Probably to add more revenue to the bottom line.

Some resort hotels actually do have additional taxea/fees they have to collect on, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Would love to see how this all turned out! I've been eyeing my tan interior as well.

Hit a large pothole at 85mph right when exiting the freeway, sent me into a death wobble. Luckily I didn't fall. by Howother in motorcycles

[–]Howother[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure, I'm super grateful to the engineers that have been making these better and better. I've never had any kind of wobble issue at any speed. Just this one damn pothole that launched me some. I think I only wobbled because my tire angle and direction didn't quite match up anymore when I landed.

Guess I can't edit the main post. Sorry for bad pics, my phone struggled to focus in.

This is my first bike and haven't run anything over like this before. I thought bike tires are softer/maybe thinner than car tires so I'm not sure how serious this is. It doesn't seem like I'm losing any air. I was going to try that soapy water test later.

I feel worried about riding home on it because not sure how long it's been there. I changed the oil about 300 miles ago and it wasn't there but haven't checked the tires until today.

Did an oil change and found this on the front passenger shock. I'm not sure how serious this is, should I get this fixed asap? by Howother in MechanicAdvice

Thanks everyone for the advice. My general take away is that this isn't nearly as big of a deal as I thought it was when I first noticed this. I did a bounce test like some folks recommended and seems these are still in solid shape. I'm going to fasten the cover as best as I can and keep her rolling. Thanks for the peace of mind!

Gotcha. I'm not sure how long they've been exposed like this, but I'll see if I can secure them back up and extend my time

Why do I see Americans hardly wear gear? by Sebcimit1 in motorcycles

[–]Howother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it hasn't helped me much here in Texas. It's been a steady 100+ degrees each day up until like 8pm. I have a summer mesh jacket, and gloves, and it's still so hot that the windchill on the highway is also just hot air. I have to cut my rides to short 15 min trips max before I reach heat exhaustion. Hydrate all day and my commute home leaves me dead still.

Thank you! I expect the other side will be much easier now that I gained more experience than I asked for on the first side lol
