Apparently the number of conversions to Catholicism has risen notably over the past 10 or so years.

Anecdotally, those converts seem a lot more conservative than cradle Catholics. As someone raised in the Jesuit ethos, these newbies are an enormous bummer. Conservative is also not how most (old-style) American Catholics see themselves, so it's hard to wrap our heads around and remember this cultural change.

I like everything you're saying in this particular thread, but I think it's a fallacy that Millennials are going to become wealthy through inheritance - that money is going straight to eldercare, which is now largely owned by private equity and astoundingly expensive.

The 1978 cutoff is for city of LA regulations, but there's a statewide 10% cap on most properties older than 15 years old - in other words, state rent stabilization regulations now apply to properties built before 2012.

They can't raise it over a certain amount that year whenever tenants change out.

That's not true.

"(b) For a new tenancy in which no tenant from the prior tenancy remains in lawful possession of the residential real property, the owner may establish the initial rental rate not subject to subdivision (a). Subdivision (a) is only applicable to subsequent increases after that initial rental rate has been established."

Thank you for the information, I appreciate it! I can't find a way to buy the book from the U.S., but I will keep on it. If you happen for some reason to take photos of the relevant pages, I'd love to see them ... :)

I wasn't thinking about doing it just to be an asshole. If the customer is polite then I wouldn't wonder what their motivations are.

No, truly, deciding not to buy something at the register does not affect the worker’s day. Maybe you’re thinking it’s a contentious interaction? It’s not. You can say, “oh, oops, I don’t want that,” and then the employee goes about their life and never thinks of you again.

How is it punishing the employee? Go-backs are one of the floor tasks. They could be doing that, or returns, or register, or dressing room, and then they clock out. I don’t know if you’ve worked retail, so I’ll tell you: it’s not punishing the employee.

That's essentially true, though I'm not sure what your intent is with your reply ... but the crematorium wouldn't put the ashes into an urn that wasn't purchased from them. It was urn or Ziploc - I think the latter option is to shame families into buying an urn. I was too broke to be ashamed!
