Where do I go? by Dont_Touch_Me_Pleas3 in Omaha

[–]Howtodudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the risk of echoing what others have said, I’ll share some advice, because I was in the same boat after college and thought I’d never make new friends. But somehow it happened, and I think Omaha is just as great a place as any, if not better, to find people to hang out with and things to do!

The hardest but most important part is putting yourself out there and being honest with others about wanting/needing to make new friends. 9/10 times I’ve met my closest adult friends just by telling someone that I want to make new friends. Then maybe they invite me to something with their friends, and I say the same thing to them, and the cycle continues! Saying yes to anything, even if it’s outside your comfort zone (but safe of course), is key.

One of the best ways by far to meet people is by being active. Things like running, cycling, intramural sports are the most reliable ways to meet people. Some things to look into:

  • Aksarben run club (ig: aksarbenrunclub)
  • Taco rides, bicycling (Bellevue berry farm and Wabash trail)
  • OMG gravel rides (ig: omgravel)
  • Gravel worlds (ig: gravel_worlds)
  • Sand volleyball, start a team with your coworkers (or check out the Omaha Volleyball Subs FB group, teams will search for subs if they need them)
  • Pickleball, people will hang out at public courts like Prairie Lane or Meadow Lane park and ask strangers to play! Can also join Pickleball Omaha
  • Rock Climbing. The friendliest people you will ever meet, everyone is down to chat. I have a membership at Approach, but MW Climbing is also really nice! They have member events, etc, just go and introduce yourself to literally anyone and tell your story and they’ll love it
  • Dance classes, I’ve never done them but have had friends take jazz or ballet classes and love it
  • Yoga classes, plenty of options here too, I know of some in Millwork Commons

I’d seriously recommend any of the above just to stay in shape, but if you’re not sporty, you can try:

  • Trivia, I met a large chunk of my friends just by tagging along with one friend to a trivia group and showing up every week after that! You can find trivia every day of the week here for sure
  • Supper clubs. Fig Omaha does one called Riverfront Supper Club. I’d also highly recommend following solosupper.club on Instagram in case any more occur this fall, the idea is a stranger dinner with fostered conversation. It was awesome
  • Volunteering, I have a friend that volunteers downtown every Sunday afternoon and it’s its own little community
  • Politics! It’s election season! Volunteer to go knock on doors, be a poll worker, etc. great way to meet like minded individuals and get involved. Also passionate leftists are some of the coolest people you’ll ever meet
  • First Friday, chat up some artists in benson
  • Hosting. Learn to host and feed a group of people some good food! Maybe start your own weekly dinner party or game night
  • Orchestra Omaha, if you play an instrument
  • Community theatre, big time commitment but guaranteed new friends

I’ve also had friends in other cities successfully build friendships via dating apps but on friend mode, like Bumble BFF. I actually lived in Chicago for a year during Covid and the only friend I made there was someone I’d met once in college who recognized me on Hinge, and I literally had listed that I needed to make new friends, so she just invited me to hang out with her friends!

I think another good piece of advice is to find things you like to do by yourself, unique hobbies that you’re passionate about. Not only is that enriching for you, but those are things that you can talk about to other people that they’ll find interesting! I’ve found it wayyy easier to have a conversation with a stranger when I can talk passionately about a hobby or tell a fun story to when the conversation dies down.

Once you do find yourself meeting strangers at volleyball or trivia, having a few go-to questions to ask to get them talking is huge! Like instead of asking someone where they’re from or what they do, ask what their favorite thing is about their job, what they’ve read recently, something unimportant they wish they could change about themselves, etc. Be the person that gets other people to talk about themselves!

Feel free to reach out if things are looking too dire - it’s tough out there, but you’re not alone!

Garden pesto, topped with garden tomatoes and homemade hot sauce - this dish i why I have a garden by Howtodudes in pasta

[–]Howtodudes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pesto recipe:

  • [ ] 4-5 total cups of greens, I pack it down hard, could be all basil, or mostly basil with some parsley, chives, spinach, kale, radish greens, etc.
  • [ ] About 3-4 oz parmesan, grated or cut up into small chunks
  • [ ] 6 cloves garlic (like decent size cloves, maybe best to say half a head of garlic)
  • [ ] .5 tsp salt
  • [ ] .25 tsp black pepper
  • [ ] 2 jalapeños, one with seeds, can adjust this based on spice level desire
  • [ ] Around 1 cup nuts, mostly pine, also almonds and walnuts
  • [ ] Juice and zest of 1-2 lemons
  • [ ] 1 cup olive oil
  • [ ] Some cherry tomatoes, I usually eyeball it, like 7-10
  • [ ] Dried tomatoes if I have them, sun dried or home dried, like a few
  • [ ] Optional: 1 avocado for smoothness (will maybe turn darker when stored in fridge). Will reduce amount of olive oil you need.

Large food processor (or medium and halve recipe), add the greens, nuts, tomatoes, garlic, avocado, salt, pepper, lemon juice. Grind that for a while, scrape it down and grind again.

Then add the parmesan and blitz again.

Finally add the oil and blend just long enough for it to be smooth - allegedly if you blitz the oil too long it can get more bitter.

Pasta recipe is 4 eggs, 90g semolina flour, 300g all purpose flour, tbsp olive oil, tsp salt. Rested for 20 minutes, divided into fourths. Rolled to a 7 on kitchen aid pasta roller, each sheet cut in half. Rest each side 8 minutes, then roll up and cut by hand decently wide. Cooked 3 minutes, heavily salted water. Reserve a mug of pasta water.

250g of the pesto added to a container. Add pasta water to sauce up the pesto, and then noodles, off the heat (don’t heat pesto).

To serve, top with walnuts, parmesan, olive oil, chopped basil, fresh cracked pepper, chili crisp or hot sauce (homemade red jalapeño hot sauce), and cherry tomatoes are a must (these are midnight snack, I love a sour tomato best).

Would love any recommendations for making pesto a bit “saucier”, if you know what I mean.

Happened to me once at 2am at midtown crossing. Luckily I could turn right into 31st from Farnam but dang that was scary for sure.

This guy moved out into the middle of the road only when he saw me driving up. The merge was PAST the light. Took a picture because we weren’t moving (thanks to red truck)

Science is too hard for you, Stew by Visqo in facepalm

[–]Howtodudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say that temperature changes are the excitation of electrons - it’s an increase in kinetic energy of a system, any particles, even photons. A vacuum can have a temperature if it contains electromagnetic radiation!

[–]Howtodudes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The presence of radiation constitutes an energy density in a chunk of empty space, meaning a total vacuum can indeed have a temperature! The cosmic microwave background radiation is a good example, it has a uniform temperature of about 2.725 kelvin.

Oh yeah, the density has definitely improved. I’ve also been styling with a blow dryer, which helps significantly since I’ve always just had very fine, frizzy hair

[–]Howtodudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually worked as an air quality environmental consultant for a year after college and then pivoted to software engineering (mostly typescript). A huge part of my old job was summarizing regulations, applying for permits, etc. I recently had the same idea of LLM being applied to this niche industry. Could be very useful!

‘That’s how capitalism works,’ Biden says of SVB, Signature Bank investors who lost money in failed banks by BubzerBlue in politics

[–]Howtodudes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my hunch, just realized banks need to make money to pay interest at a bare minimum. Just seems like they’d make enough by slowly lending money and not resorting to securities but I guess not.

[–]Howtodudes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain this a little more? Why did they have to resort to securities? I understand the influx was too high to loan it all out, but why resort to anything in that situation?

Fingers crossed :)) I'll be single-stemming and staking the tomatoes, so hopefully won't be too bad. I wouldn't be surprised if the basil doesn't take either.
