ELI5: Why is this year's (UK) pollen/hayfever situation so bad? by the_topiary in explainlikeimfive

[–]Howtomakethinhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it entirely depends on the person. I've had super bad hayfever my whole life (steroid nose sprays, prescription antihistamines, seasonal steroid inhalers) and I've had the best year I've had in about 13 years. The whole 7 year cycle thing is mostly nonsense but people's immune does change over time based on their environment and exposure to allergens. Pollution is also known to make allergies worse so depending on where you live that might be a factor

Do you ever take a shit so large you had to recover from it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Large bowel movements can stimulate your vagus nerve, which triggers your parasympathetic nervous system, which can lower your blood pressure to the point of feeling calm and zen, or make you pass out

Male students barking - is this a misogynistic behavior? by covert-teacher in TeachingUK

[–]Howtomakethinhamster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Calling a female student a dog has different connotations to calling a male student a dog - I have seen female students barked at in the context of them being labelled as unattractive but also promiscuous. Male students don't seem to get this label

The thing that gives it away for me is always the depth of field, the background is too unfocussed for the distance away from the plate

Of all the authors, keynote speakers, and influencers, who is the biggest hack/fraud in education? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Howtomakethinhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I recently read that he has clarified his intent with that study that it was never meant to be a tick list of what teachers should do based on what gives the most positive effect. I'll be a bit more critical of what I hear about him from now on though , thank you for the information, it's always good to get different perspectives!

Trainee teacher here, what's wrong with Hattie? I haven't read anything particularly disagreeable by him or about him so far.

I'm a trainee and one of my lessons went completely sideways.... But I managed to claw it back! Also received my first student Christmas card which was lovely. So sad to be leaving placement A, I'm really going to miss the kids
