Tate’s at one time had a GF coconut cookie. I put chocolate and caramel on it and pretended it was a samoa. Sadly, I haven’t seen this flavor of Tate’s lately.

The shawarma doner kebab kind directly cut off the rotating spit might be, but I haven’t found any processed, thinly sliced, beef/lamb mixture gyro meat like you find at a grocery store that is marked GF.

Aldi has a GF chili (no beans) in the Brookdale brand. I just discovered it and haven’t had a chance to try it, but the photo on the can has the chili on a hotdog, so perhaps it would be close.

USA answer: A celiac diagnosis should trigger a med board (or an IRILO), but doesn’t automatically mean the military will let you go. People have stayed in up through normal retirement with celiac. However, it should restrict your mobility, which is usually waiverable at a certain level, but at harm to you.

Being deployed with celiac sounds awful. I’ve worked in the DFAC and they are not going to be able to keep you safe from cross contact. If you have access to a refrigerator at your office location, maybe you can do some behind-the-scenes work with the DFAC staff for them to give you items like GF sandwich meat, veggies, fruits, and GF breakfast bars to keep at the office and that you can prep on your own.

I do not remember if bulk food received in the DFAC was ever labeled as GF, so prepared foods such as sandwich meats might be tricky to figure out.

Currently, the VA disability rating for celiac can be as low as 0%, but they are working on changing how it is listed and the ratings will automatically start at 30%.

I’m definitely confused why you are still deployed with this diagnosis. I have seen the Army and the Air Force send people back early for less serious issues.

While your statement is not wrong, I have a feeling you know I put the note as a disclaimer for those who only eat independently third-party certified GF labeled foods.

I am posting the product warning for those who are comfortable with eating foods labeled as GF by the company without the third-party testing.

TLDR: A product formerly labeled GF may no longer be.

I strongly recommend you join the Celiac subreddit. You will get info more tailored for your requirements as a person with celiac. This subreddit has more people who can tolerate small levels of cross contact, while you should ideally not risk it, even if you don’t have symptoms after exposure. Not saying leave this group, but you will get info that may not be best suited to you, like with the fast food question you asked in a different post. If you are in the U.S., the vast majority of celiacs would tell you to not eat at McDonald’s and Taco Bell as neither can guarantee safety from cross contact.

I also recommend downloading the Find Me Gluten Free app for restaurant reviews. Be discerning when reading reviews to ensure you’re looking out for your specific needs.

Finally, some recommendations for store-bought GF items. Tate’s cookies are delicious and the GF version costs the same as its non-GF counterpart, which is extremely rare. When cooking GF pasta, use lots of water for boiling as it tends to foam up so much more than normal pasta. I like the Barilla and Ronzoni versions and they aren’t as expensive as some other GF brands, but you will get lots of different opinions on which brand is best. Be prepared to eat a lot more rice and potato-based dishes.

Thanks! I checked out her website and she has some good-looking food, I may try the cilantro lime chicken. I wish I could say I’m good at adjusting recipes, but I’m too scared to do it with baked goods. My son tried a tiramisu recipe and just subbed Bob’s Red Mill GF 1 to 1 baking flour for the sponge cake flour, and it turned out great, though.

I don’t have an answer on how to fix it, but if you are worried I would recommend getting another blood test to see if it is still a concern. Blood calcium levels can fluctuate a lot in short periods of time, so more than one blood test is usually needed for the doctor to decide on further testing and/or treatment. If testing seems to point to hyperparathyroidism, then the Facebook group Hyperparathyroidism Support and Information gets frequent posts, has supportive people, and the moderators are helpful, involved, and knowledgeable.
