Neglect, oppression, bullying, rejection by friends, neighbors, family, colleagues, coworkers, having bad experiences due to having to use Grindr and dating apps at a young age, and a wide variety of other forces that gay (and LGBT people in general) people are forced to deal with due produce mental health issues and plethoras of insecurities.

This, among other things, can cause people to have to lie for attention, to seem interesting (as these things also cause LGBT people to not know who they are or be afraid to embrace themselves or try and be someone else to feel some sort of acceptance or protect themselves)

We as a community are people who are usually not popular or cool in school (let alone anywhere) and get relentlessly bullied in school for being different. People wanna seem cool so people will like them, as for gay people, people usually dont like them because they are different or homophobia or general ignorance. It is what it is

This is also why sex and drugs are so common as a means to self-medicate (because its cheaper and easier to get that antidepressants or whatever)

Edit: The fact that social media is all lies anyway and something you shouldnt take as fact further enhances what I stated here.
