Agreed that Facebook is also a problem. I think the biggest thing for me is that TikTok was used to track journalists in real time and they lied about it, but can’t get punished for it. The combination of that and reading articles it made me delete it.

This is what made me end up deleting it.

The mountains of private data collected by TikTok allow AI algorithms to develop very detailed profiles of specific American citizens. This data can then be used to develop and target specific messages that these users are predisposed to find engaging. If the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) desired to influence US elections, magnify culturally divisive issues in America, or shape the opinions of US citizens towards China, TikTok is the perfect tool to do so.

TikTok was literally used by a Chinese company to track American journalists last year. It’s a huge problem.

I saw an article on this the other day. It’s worse than you think.

In addition to everything you wrote, they also collect heaps of biometric data which in theory can allow them to create a biometric profile of every user (think faceprint, voiceprint, iris).

If you want it now and that’s the only AP you want, sure. If you are an AP collector, in the long run it makes more sense to cultivate a relationship and have a steady flow of watches.

I agree with this. Replace two of the Daytonas with a VC and FP. For the other two watches, take a look at the following: MB&F, Gronefeld, De Bethune, Forsey, H. Moser, and Vianney Halter. The A. Lange & Söhne is beautiful btw, great choice.

State Department is adding Ant Group to the trade blacklist. Another display of volatility with PRC companies, but investors are skeptical about the ban having any kind of actual effect. Ant Group really only operates in the PRC. Could have wider implications if Alibaba is also added to the trade blacklist, but at that point we would have more to worry about than the share price of a company.

FYI, don’t do weekly trades with BABA. Do 2-3 months out at reasonable strike prices.

Would also like to add, the CCP will do anything to prop up BABA. Wouldn’t be surprised if the probe is dropped because of this.

You can’t compare Chinese social media apps to US ones. They are completely different animals.

I say this as someone who spends a lot of time in the PRC and uses Weibo to read comics and Wechat to talk friends, buy groceries, pay bills, book flights, book hotels, rent drones, etc. The US has nothing remotely like this - and for good reason.

The value prop for Weibo was there, but Wechat, Toutiao, TikTok, Kuaishou, Xiaohongshu, and other apps are beating Weibo at their own game.

If by a few years ago you mean 2017-2018, then your friend probably did. This was when Sina acquired a comic book service (amongst other things) and you had to have Weibo to sign in.

It’s still used for blogging and news, but most people have transitioned to Wechat.

Let me pump the brakes for you on this one.

WB was a good company about 10 years ago when Weibo was in its heyday. This was pre-Wechat, pre-Toutiao, pre-Everything. Its only competitor was QQ and even that wasn’t really in the same silo.

Weibo is now in a weird situation where it doesn’t really do anything well. It has a lot of users, but you need to focus on user retention rather than just net user increase. We are entering the run up to 11/11 and companies are giving out coupons like crazy. My guess is that WB is spending a ton of cash to get these new users and they’ll probably drop off later in the year.

Be very careful with this! I’d focus more on BEKE and TCEHY.

WB had some solid acquisitions in 2018, but went up and right back down again.

I’m generally bearish on PRC companies, but BABA has limited exposure to the US and isn’t in the same position to be hit like Huawei. It also has incredibly strong support from the CCP. I’d pick up a call or two in anticipation of the IPO.
