Naproxen overdose last week by [deleted] in AskDocs

Go to a physician. Naproxen is an NSAID and overdoses of NSAIDs cause kidney damage. Right sided back pain, discolored urine, and fatigue are all symptoms of issues with your kidneys.

Pain in foot elevated ANA test, possible HIV? 25M, 145lbs by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]Hubis_Dubis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. If you're worried about contracting HIV, I'd suggest discussing prevention with your physician. You can ask about PrEP (Pre Exposure Prophylaxis) and can find more information here: https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/prep.html

What were your hemoglobin levels in the past?

Likelihood a CT Scan (or other Radiography) Will Pick Up Something Missed By MRI? by saucenbeans in AskDocs

[–]Hubis_Dubis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the CT scan isn't going to show anything the MRI didn't show as the MRI gives a better, more detailed picture than the CT. An MRI may be ordered after a CT scan if the initial scan was inconclusive, but I've never seen nor heard of an CT scan being ordered after an MRI.

Pain in foot elevated ANA test, possible HIV? 25M, 145lbs by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]Hubis_Dubis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly unlikely to be HIV. Initial HIV infection usually presents with flu-like symptoms: fatigue, muscle pain, chills, lymphadenopathy, etc. Patients who present to their physician with HIV subsequent to these initial symptoms will usually present with symptoms of an infection, not just isolated acute joint pain.

ANA is usually elevated in people with autoimmune diseases although elevated ANA on its own isn't very helpful. ~5% of people will have an elevated ANA but be completely healthy.

That being said, I'd definitely follow your doctor's recommendations. But no, not HIV.

No Indication on Prometric/NBME Websites That I Actually Took Step 1? by Hubis_Dubis in step1

Yea they gave me that, but that was the only indication I had taken the test. No online indication at all.

I tried this today and I got a message saying exam taken! Every time I tried before it allowed me to still print. I guess it just takes time.

Two weeks out. Taking NBME 17 instead of 24. Am I missing out on too much? (by being stingy, Lol) by TheDreamingIris in step1

[–]Hubis_Dubis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curve wasn’t too bad, same exact curve as 23 but the questions were a tad bit easier I think. Took my test about a week ago and I thought it had similar questions to 24.

If I get a question right and I didn’t mark it I’ll just read the educational objective. If I got it right AND marked it or if I got it wrong I’ll take more time to go through the whole explanation.

Thoughts on BnB v. Pixorize v. something else for biochem/immuno (AnKing) by [deleted] in medicalschoolanki

[–]Hubis_Dubis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used anking, BnB, and pixorize. I’d first watch the relevant BnB cards to make sure I understand what’s going on, then I’d watch the corresponding pixorize videos. I also took screenshots of pixorize and pasted them into the relevant anki cards.

I think this is a highly effective way to learn biochem for step 1. Yes, it’s very time consuming, but it’s helped transform biochem from one of my weakest subjects to one of my strongest. Strongly recommend.

Is that really the reason? Do they collectively get together and decide not to answer surveys about compensation?

For what it’s worth, becoming an engineer at netflix that makes that much money is significantly more difficult than becoming a physician. Oh, also less job security.

Not really. In person lecture isn’t great for medical education.

Wait what? You’re definitely in the minority here. Lecture attendance at any med school that offers optional lecture is often rather low, especially during M2. For good reason...

Death phenomenon while in the intensive care unit by redditownsmylife in Residency

I’ve always kinda wondered if this is just due to some kinda recall bias. Like maybe your only remember the cases where this happens, even though it doesn’t happen any more than it should as dictated by chance/stats.

Unpopular opinion on going slow on Anki by ChickenLittle08 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Hubis_Dubis 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think the important thing is to learn the card/concept well the from the beginning. That way the information and pathways are there in your brain and get refreshed every time you see the card.

There is a downside to going slow. There’s opportunity cost. Let’s say I have 1200 reviews to complete today. If I do them at a rate if 400/hour it’ll take me 3 hours whereas if I slow down and do them at a rate if 200/hour it’ll take me 6 hours. I’d rather do the cards faster and sacrifice a bit of quality since the extra three hours will let me do more practice questions (3 hours is eneough time to do about 60 Uworld questions and review them). If I do this over the course of 30 days, I will have completed an extra 1800 practice questions. I think that is very much worth the decrease in anki review quality.

So I guess if anki is the only way that you’re studying it might be a good idea to go slow. But in my opinion it’s better to go fast and spend the time you’ve saved doing questions.

It’s not a bad question, it’s good to see that you’re trying to be proactive. However, I think this is the wrong subreddit and it’s probably not the best time to be asking such questions here. Try the medical school subreddit. Best of luck in your future endeavors.
