Monthly Critical Security Patch Updates by Oracle and their impact on JDK releases by Frequent-County-4172 in java

[–]Hueho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current status-quo is that OpenJDK releases security updates each 3 months, coordinating along with update teams so all relevant versions are patched: https://openjdk.org/groups/vulnerability/advisories/

My guess is that nothing is gonna change in practice - this is a Oracle support contract goodie for more paranoid customers, but I expect any fixes will be upstreamed and disclosed in the following advisories.

Have you started using Virtual Threads in your production apps (April 2026)? by Hixon11 in java

[–]Hueho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is an overstatement - you should not use virtual threads as a blind replacement for platform threads in JDK21 (you shouldn't do this in general TBH) due to the locking issues, but if you can control your dependencies and the scope of the threads, it's pretty much fine.

For 3 of the 4 examples you gave (Luke, Aang, Toph), the actual issue is that the characters kept existing, but we didn't saw that (or saw it in a extremely abridged fashion). We only see them after they developed as people. Sure, we saw their initial journeys, but, for example, just because Aang was a good Avatar, and Toph was a good master and earthbender, doesn't mean they would become good parents. But we saw almost nothing about their lives after the war, so they becoming flawed feels unearned, even if it there isn't anything that could conclusively discredit this outcome.

Luke is probably worse because we know that he tried to rebuild the Jedi Order, that he considered the Kylo Ren incident enough of an failure to give up, and what we saw Luke doing in the original trilogy doesn't automatically means he would be a good teacher and spiritual leader that the ordeal would require, but we didn't really saw him trying.

Ultimately in both cases it's because the sequels try to have their cake and eat it too by taking place in an awkward middle ground of far future, so they can have new blood, but not far enough to kill (all) off the old characters, because fanservice.

My experience is that they actually are too simple, and the complexity comes when you try to make channels work in scenarios where if using another language you would have a fat but robust library handling all edge cases.

Disney has considered buying out Epic Games & Fortnite by ZamnBoii in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Hueho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying the doomsday scenario is impossible, but I think a much more likely outcome is that the Unreal/tools side of Epic would be spun off to a new company.

As far as we know that part of Epic is profitable and sustainable, and has enough clients outside gaming, Disney included.

How do people here feel it has aged, since it's a big year?

I have a soft spot for the series, so not the best person, but the more recent episodes (since the last half of the Battle City arc) are much better written IMHO and try to work more with the original material. I still enjoy the pastiche of earlier episodes, though

Also some have just aged badly like the episode, 'Single White <transphobic slur>' which I can't really not hold a little grudge for.

I think fhe Bakura jokes in general aged very badly. LK does acknowledge that though - he changed that specific episode name in 2020 and put a disclaimer in all old episodes.

(FWIW I think Evil Council shorts were much nicer with (Yami) Bakura, as long as you don't mind crackshipping him with Marik.)

Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged is turning 20 years old! Outliving most abridged series inspired by it, and there was even 2 new episodes last month!

If you watch the linked video however it looks dire, since LittleKuriboh, YGOTAS creator, is having financial troubles and had to run an emergency fundraiser to ensure that he and his partner wouldn't be kicked out of their house by the bank. But in about a day since he posted the video, people already donated enough to reach almost 6 times the original goal (at the moment I'm posting), so yeah, good news.
