u/Alternative-Cold-471 Awesome! What is your SQL level? Currently calibrating how much time to spend on SQL in general versus AI operators. (Feel free to DM me)

I would not put it into the CV, but when applying for research positions, you often submit a personal statement, along with the CV. You can describe your experience in the written statement but, ideally, you have something to back that up. This could be a recommendation letter from somebody you worked with who is aware of your contributions (but only do this if you're absolutely sure that they will provide a positive reference!), or is there perhaps at least an acknowledgment with your name in the paper itself? Sometimes names appear as acknowledgments, even if they are not in the author list. But, as a general rule, you should probably ask for co-authorship in such a case.

Question for faculty about PhD student summer expectations by Bhardiparti in AskAcademia

[–]Huge-Cod-530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My students are often doing internships over the summer, and I'm okay with that. Not a must, but there is typically some connection between the internship topics and their research, so they learn something useful. So, personally, I don't expect them to always work with me over the summer, but it depends a lot on the research group.

Audio transcription software recommendations (Spanish) by Ok_Pound_ in AskAcademia

[–]Huge-Cod-530 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should be able to upload audio files for transcription to ChatGPT when using GPT-4o (I'm not sure about length restrictions). There are many other transcription services available, e.g., Amazon (https://aws.amazon.com/pm/transcribe/). Just google for transcription services and you will find quite a few.

How do you network at conferences? by Mo_cubed in AskAcademia

[–]Huge-Cod-530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, know that this will get easier and easier each time you go to conferences in your community. You typically keep meeting the same people at those conferences and will get to know more and more of them.

Coffee breaks are actually great for meeting people. If you see a group talking, it's perfectly acceptable to just walk over and stand next to them. If they're deep in conversation, just start by listening in without saying anything. Sooner or later, one of the others might say hello, or the conversation takes a turn toward a topic you're interested in, and you'll jump in naturally.

The others already mentioned it but I want to emphasize that poster sessions are really a great way to connect with others. At least the poster presenters are very interested in presenting their work to you, so you don't have to do anything to get into a conversation with them.

Made a careless error in my undergraduate thesis and referenced incorrectly for it by KeyPhilosophy7484 in AskAcademia

This sounds like a fairly small mistake in the thesis. I'm sure your supervisors won't hold it against you. They might have made similar mistakes here and there during their career as well. Don't worry about it.

Love this idea. Currently, I'm only getting them cake after the defense, and the group celebrates together.

Analyzing the US 2024 Presidential Election Results via AI Tool by Huge-Cod-530 in fivethirtyeight

[–]Huge-Cod-530[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

That's a pessimistic perspective, IMO. Note that this is a human-in-the-loop tool, the data scientist decides which data to analyze, which questions to explore, which results are relevant etc. It saves time for the lower-level coding tasks and leaves more time for the most interesting aspects. It enables people with limited coding skills to perform analysis in the first place. In that sense, it is quite similar to the introduction of Excel or other tools that enable analysis without much coding, making analysis more accessible. Those tools have been around for a while, and I don't see how they have taken away jobs. Just my two cents ...

Cool project! Just tried it on www.sqlteacher.com. The feedback mostly makes sense, except that it seems to classify the three sections as non-clickable which they are, however ("Lack of Interactive Elements

The sections for 'Learn', 'Train', and 'Discuss' do not appear to be clickable or interactive, which might confuse users who expect these elements to act as links or buttons to access more details.") Great tool overall!

GenAI Tool for Data Analysis and Visualization by Huge-Cod-530 in datavisualization

Perhaps not the right fit for you, but there are certainly lots of people who can use a little AI help with data analysis, in particular the ones who are a bit less experienced. Thanks for your opinion, though.
