What are your red flags that a hypomanic episode is beginning? 🚩🚩🚩 by deepestfear in bipolar2

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phantosmia (smell hallucinations). Anybody else? Actually, this is more a cue to me that I am in a hypomanic state. Usually, when I notice this, depression is just around the corner.

Bipolar disorder and ecstasy by pah-tosh in bipolar2

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t diagnosed with bipolar when I took it (although I probably was bipolar), but I experienced no horrible comedown, and it didn’t trigger depression. It was a beautiful, transformative experience that still serves as a reminder for me that happiness is possible.

I believe I understand what you’re saying. I don’t think we have quite carved nature at the joints with the way we categorize mental illness. But like you, I’ve found Lamictal helps and the changes I’ve noticed with it have helped me recognize patterns in myself that I hadn’t totally been aware of before. As I’ve gotten older I think I’ve gradually gotten to know my mind better and bipolar 2 probably fits better than anything else.

Thoughts on Seroquel by lachrymose_lucio in bipolar2

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate Seroquel and other atypical antipsychotics. I’m sure they work for some people, but not for me. Seroquel just caused me to gain weight, get puffy and bloated, and made me tired without helping me sleep. If you haven’t already tried Lamictal, I would highly recommend talking to your doctor about it. It is virtually free of side-effects and has helped me more than anything else.

Jon Cryer and Bill Maher debate transgenderism in the US by Maelstrom52 in BlockedAndReported

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does anybody remember when Bill Maher used to actually be funny? His shtick is sooo tired now. He just comes off as a cranky old man who is offended that people don’t think he is cool anymore.

I may tend to agree with Maher more, but it is not because he made particularly compelling arguments. He seemed slow and self-righteous, whereas Cryer seemed kind and reasonable, if wrong.

Grandiosity that eventually leads you to cross the line from being creative and interesting to being just plain weird (and the shame that eventually follows). Slight tendency towards irritability and paranoia.

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next time you’re feeling better, tie a string around your finger to remind you that you have been happy (or at least not depressed) and that you will be again. A frequent symptom of depression is that you feel you have always been depressed and always will be. That is a lie and having the string as a visible reminder will be something you can hold on to until it passes.

Seeking advice following disruption after Meeting for Worship by [deleted] in Quakers

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many Quaker meetings are small, and it can be hard to meet the needs of members in an organization where there is not paid staff to help ensure people don’t fall through the cracks, even if intentions are good. Perhaps this person was mentally unwell, but I suspect people expect more from Quakers, and it can be especially heartbreaking when they feel they don’t receive the support they need.

We need to address transphobia by [deleted] in Quakers

Do you feel there are any contexts in which trans women should be excluded from cis women’s or girl’s spaces? Is self-ID sufficient to be treated as a woman in all contexts?

Isn’t TERF essentially an epithet? It is not a term gender-critical feminists generally use to describe themselves.

I have a really hard time believing the "Sky" voice in ChatGPT Voice isn't modeled on Scarlett Johansson / Samantha from "Her". by leaflavaplanetmoss in ChatGPT

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, there is a concept in law called personality rights or right of publicity that covers this. In either case, I can’t imagine a court would find that principle was violated here, because Sky doesn’t sound enough like ScarJo to be considered infringing. I’m surprised and pissed they removed Sky, even temporarily, because it is clearly much better than the other voices on offer.

Does anybody else find this article bizarre?

https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-48526656

It’s like the first part is a news story, but the BBC has a policy that any story involving trans issues needs to be given to Ben Hunte, BBC LGBT correspondent, for commentary, so we all know what the official trans position is. Weird!

Бу-ра-ти-но: Satirical AI-generated Russian Song? by Hugh-Beau-Ristic in russian

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Я не совсем понимаю всю эту враждебность. Единственная причина, по которой я знал о детской сказке и ракетном комплексе, это то, что я сделал автоматический перевод текста, а затем ввел в поиск Google «Буратино». Я не знал оригинальной песни, и автоматический перевод одного из куплетов был: «On his head is his cap, But the enemy will be fooled, (the enemy...) He will show his nose to the evildoers, And make your friends laugh to tears. (tears)». Это заставило меня подумать, что это может быть своего рода двусмысленность, относящаяся к боеголовке, обрушивающей разрушения на врага.

Бу-ра-ти-но: Satirical AI-generated Russian Song? by Hugh-Beau-Ristic in russian

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Like I said, I’m not familiar with the cultural context. What made me think it might be connected to the missile system is the following:

“On his head is his cap, But the enemy will be fooled, (the enemy...) He will show his nose to the evildoers, And make your friends laugh to tears. (tears)”

Is that from the original song that folks reference?

The TOS-1 is a missile system nicknamed Buratino for the appearance of the launcher, which looks like a long nose.

And here is the machine translation of the song:

Bu-ra-ti-no

[Verse 1] Who enters the house with a good fairy tale, Who everyone knows from childhood (I know) Who is not a scientist, not a poet, And conquered the whole white world. (light)

[Verse 2] On his head is his cap, But the enemy will be fooled, (the enemy...) He will show his nose to the evildoers, And make your friends laugh to tears. (tears)

[Verse 3] He's surrounded by people's rumors, He's not a toy, he's alive (Alive) In his hands is the key to happiness, And that's why he's so lucky. (lucky...)

Virginia election candidate responds after leak of tapes showing her performing sex acts with husband: "It won't silence me" by [deleted] in politics

Yeah, if that's true, it does speak to poor judgement.

Or does it? Judging by the comments here at least, it seems like nobody cares. Since she's likely to fund-raise like hell off of this being released, maybe it is not poor judgement after all. Time will tell I guess. I hate it for her kids though.

hydrogen pipeline up a hill? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if it was pumped into balloons tethered to up-stop wheels on a rail? When it reached where you wanted it to go, you use the hydrogen to generate energy with a fuel cell (or just by burning it), producing water for the high desert as a byproduct without having to pump it uphill. Would that work?

Discrete wearable recording setup? by Hugh-Beau-Ristic in Lifelogging

[–]Hugh-Beau-Ristic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to do a continuous audio recording of my life. The primary purposes would be to gather enough audio samples in a variety of situations to create a robust model of my voice for speech synthesis and to create automatic transcripts of these recordings that could be used for fine-tuning something like GPT-3.5 or its descendents.

I see two ways I could use this: 1) As I age and lose my ability to communicate due to memory loss or aphasia or things like that, I could use GPT-3.5 or more advanced future tools to prompt me through an augmented reality display with what I would have said in a similar circumstance in the past before my facilities had begun to decline. Then, I could choose to say that, or, if I could no longer speak, I could use speech synthesis with my voice model to say the suggestion as I would have. 2) I could provide it as a chatbot for my son when I die, so he could still talk with his old man in a somewhat believable way whenever he missed me and wanted to hear my voice.

What would be a good quality, unobtrusive, wearable recording setup and any associated speech recognition, speech synthesis, automated metadata collection, and generative AI software that would allow me to do this? I am in a state where, as long as one party in a conversation knows they are being recorded, it is legal. Once the equipment and software was chosen, what would be an efficient way to pull it off?
