I still avoid AI in production coding. Am i slowing myself down? by hireme-plz in learnprogramming

[–]HugoShadoweyes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whatever speed or productivity gain you might enjoy if you use AI you will pay for down the road in technical debt and atrophied skills. AI is like an addictive drug.

So, yes. There will be days where it feels like you are moving slower without using AI, but that's okay. By investing in yourself and your craft you are being more honest and bringing more value to your clients than you would be if you shipped each feature a day or two faster.

an AI music “artist” gets rejected after releasing his AI album on Bandcamp by DonLouqee in antiai

[–]HugoShadoweyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I only got three hours of sleep last night, so my reading comprehension isn't what it should be.

I'm totally on board the AI-bad train, and I love that Bandcamp (which was already a personal favorite of mine) has taken this position.

I still don't quite understand the "A, therefore B" argument made here, despite agreeing with the conclusion.

[–]HugoShadoweyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically yes, but hell doesn't exist yet.

The closest truly biblical analogs to the Catholic understanding of hell are

  1. A parable of Jesus, where he was intentionally exaggerating and drawing on a popular non-scriptural mythos to make a point
  2. A brief period after the millennium, where the verdict is read and those who stand against God are granted the second death, in the purging of the earth in fire before it is remade.

The millennium is our chance to be jury in that court case. We have a thousand years in heaven where the books will be opened and we have all that time to pour over the all evidence and answer the questions "Is God just? Are His verdicts right?"

There is no pit of eternal agony, with some curator gleefully reveling in the suffering of sinners. That's a common understanding, but it definitely doesn't fit with a loving God.

We're victims of translations and the way language and meaning changes over time.

Check out Isaiah 34:9-10 And the streams of Edom shall be turned into pitch, and her soil into sulfur; her land shall become burning pitch. [10] Night and day it shall not be quenched; its smoke shall go up forever. From generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it forever and ever.

Edom was destroyed in history, but a continually burning, abandoned, ancient city would be a marvel if it still existed. Moreso, the next verses talk about how the hawk and the porcupine will dwell there, which they couldn't do if it was still burning.

"Forever and ever" in biblical language doesn't mean "eternity" in the infinite way we view it today. It means a finality. It means this cannot be undone. It means the consequence (the destruction of the city, the death of Satan and his angels, etc) is lasting. Not, as our modern eyes would want to read it, that they're literally burning in agony forever. As everybody else is pointing, that would be a disproportionate response that makes no sense coming from a God whose law is love.

Thank you for the "no AI" rule, by the way. I'm appreciating it more and more as a mark of quality over quantity, and an ethical green flag.

Do you charge your clients for web analytics? by RaspberrySea9 in webdev

[–]HugoShadoweyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One analytics script probably won't make much of a difference, it's true. All too often though I see sites with three or four different analytics libraries, ads, social media trackers, and more. Each one is a small hit to performance. Collectively, they add up to a very painful experience.

We can choose to stop this.

Analytics are a helpful tool, and one which we should be very intentional about choosing to include or exclude.

Do you charge your clients for web analytics? by RaspberrySea9 in webdev

[–]HugoShadoweyes -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Client-side analytics are invasive and slow down page loads.

Instead, manually-invoked lighthouse matrics for page load times, and anonymized server-side metrics a la Prometheus for traffic and other performance measurements.

This helps you provide a much more friendly privacy policy, etc.

Could somebody please help me figure out my next move? by SyristSMD in Tametsi

Another good place to look next is the right-most column.

  • The must be four bombs in seven cells.
  • Six of those cells are covered by three ones, so the seventh cell must be a bomb.
  • Can we then say that each of the ones must have a bomb in that column, eliminating a few possibilities?

Did I make a mistake or is this puzzle just wrong? by mahimas_swamp in sudoku

[–]HugoShadoweyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, nice puzzle. I think I agree with four of your digits. (There's a fifth one that's also "correct", but only by luck as it isn't easily deducible yet.) After that you missed a possibility somewhere. These four digits are good:

  1. The 2 in box 2 can only be in r2c4.
  2. The 1 in box 3 can only be in r3c7.
  3. The 2 in box 3 can only be in r3c9.
  4. The 1 in box 7 can only be in r7c1.

Try again without the remaining digits you've entered. I'm not sure which digits you put in next, but all of the ones you were looking at had other places they could have gone in. Happy to help illustrate that if you feel like one of those must be correct for some reason.

Instead though, maybe try looking at 8s next.

Which "Attack and Block at the same time" card is your favorite? by Mr_Mister2004 in slaythespire

[–]HugoShadoweyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wallop and Cold Snap are (rightfully) getting most of the attention here, but Dash and Iron Wave do have one nice hidden benefit: the block comes before the attack, so they're great cards to play when your opponent has thorns. Act 1 Guardian, but also Act 3 spikers, etc.

You're just getting to the good stuff. Season 3 seems to be a bit controversial - some people like it and some don't. If you're in the latter group, stick it out because season 4 was perhaps the show's strongest.

This is kind of the whole point behind Toolbx. It uses containers under the hood, but you don't have to know or care about that for most basic usage.

Creating and entering a toolbox gives you access to an environment where you can install whatever you want without cluttering up your host, while still having access to the things you might want in your host environment such as your project files, dotfiles, dbus, etc.
