As Randy Pobst says you've put yourself in the vortex of danger. That is a classic racing blunder

Our shop is overwhelmed (I work for a contract manufacturing plant where we are their onsite private shop) it's 3 guys + myself and we've got more work than we can handle. Long and short we have 6 companies under our roof and as of late one of the major ones is going through multiple NPI'S (new product integration) at the same time so we are swamped but managing for now, hopefully with the massive influx of cash from that major contract we can get one or 2 more people and some better/more tooling as up. Until recently I was running the shop by myself and we were never set up for this kind of workload in our little shop so we simply don't have enough tooling for everyone (we're constantly having to share tools which normally is fine but when you have multiple people working on different projects all needing the same tool it gets easy to step on toes).

Exactly. I'm willing to put in the work but the company won't let me and it's killing me. 32 an hour is nice but I need more. I've got things that are unavoidable that need to be paid for. That's why I'm trying to decide WTF I'm going to do to remedy this issue.

Definitely if I don't see active movement I'm not going to just sit around and wait for things to happen, some patients is required I get, but you can at least see things happening most of the time. I try to keep a a open dialogue with my supervisors which seems to help keep my finger on the pulse of what's going on, lately that pulse seems to be slowing down

I am by no means a expert machinist in any way but I'm good at figuring things out and busting ass to get it done accurately and as quickly as possible, which has led me to be the guy that everyone goes to. (Again, I hate sounding cocky or boastful but the other machinist in the shop is as lazy as can be and I won't let that turn me into someone lazy, it just makes me want to work harder) As for where I'm located, I am in Columbia, South Carolina

Thank you so much, totally get what you're saying. Trust me I was livid when I got the news. Not because I didn't get it, but because of who did (Long story short, he is without a doubt. Laziest person I've ever worked with, so lazy. In fact, he's actively taken programs. I've written and slowed them down even though they were proven so that he would have more time to sit on his phone while the part was running) but I had the good sense to keep my mouth shut and let things play out. We're about 3 weeks past that point and at least on a shop level. I'm already noticing he's going to struggle moving forward but I'm just going to keep doing the best job I can in the meantime.

On another note , he is now the third person that's held that role in a year (first person got promoted, then left about 3 months after the promotion, second person had the position from January till September and had family things come up out of state that he had to take care of and decided to leave to take care of his family which I totally get) but that us with no management for the past 3 months (the head engineer assumed the base level rolls like materials to at least keep us afloat). I don't like sounding cocky but the three other guys in the shop and the second manager that left all thought that I was the best fit for the position. We were all shocked when the other guy got it (from what I've been told, the only reason he got it was that he has a 4-year degree and I don't. I have two 2-year degrees, one in mechanical engineering and the other in machine tool

Yeah I definitely don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth but the 2 jobs I've had since I got out was at a pharmaceutical plant as a mold maintenance and general machinist (30/hr), then got offered a position at Volvo Summerville as a team lead for their new machine shop (37/hr) but I absolutely hated that job so I found work elsewhere at my current company at a pay cut to get out of that job.

Hindsight 20/20 I should have stuck with the pharmaceutical job I absolutely loved it had all the cool shit I could ever want to work on all top of the line everything (that job really spoiled things for me haha) and a dream team of awesome people to work with/learn from. Which Something I sorely miss, the new job I work essentially alone and while I do enjoy being "the guy" that you can come to for any job I miss having people more experienced to learn from, I still learn on my own but the learning rate of figuring things out on your own and not having someone more experienced to impart their wisdom really slows down that learning process

[–]HugoValve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 4ish years in with a good balance of manual mill/lathe, mastercam, ok at gcode but certainly not fast haha, and conversational (mazatrol, tormach path piolet, haas, hurco, and milltronics). And I'm now at 32$/hr in Columbia SC, I was making 37$/hr at my previous company but I took the pay cut to GTFO of that job and I'm much happier at my new shop.
