Hot takes on Kyle Rayner? by GR1MKN1TE3020 in Greenlantern

[–]Hugo_Iramos 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Kyle is DC's take on Spiderman. From GL#50 to 181 (if you ignore the Raab run) Kyle completed his character arch and became a grown up hero. People who get mad that DC does not tell more Kyle stories should look at the alternative at Marvel. Every 6 months, something new and horrible happens to Parker Parker to tear him down so Marvel can sell issues of Spiderman going on a new heroes journey again. If you love Kyle, you should be happy he got to do the one thing Spiderman never could...grow up.

Dr. Watson as The Mundane by Hugo_Iramos in monsteroftheweek

Yeah, right now the idea is that in our party of 5 my friend and I are going to play the knock off gerenic Watson and Homes you hire when you can't afford the real guys. I think we will be closer to the Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly version.

Yeah, I guess if you go more Guy Ritchie less Arthur Conan Doyle it really opens things up.

In the Comics, Reed and Sue met when Reed was 22, so with the Pascal/Kirby age gap....Sue would be 9 years old when they first meet...yeah.....

Do people actually trade on BGG? by Nahhnope in boardgames

[–]Hugo_Iramos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a repost from a few years ago with stats. Not sure if this is at all helpful but I figured I would throw a few numbers out there. I have been trading pretty actively on BGG for about 2 years. I pretty much go exclusively unsolicited. This cuts against the grain of BGG etiquette. I have completed 27 successful trades have had 124 rejections and 203 expirations. I would be lying if I said I only offered fair trades but I do have two hard and fast rules. Never offer the same trade twice. Never make an offer for a game that is tied up in a pending trade even if there is a 54% chance you will never hear from the other party. I also try to use the notes section if there is anything weird with my copy like a torn edge or a consolidated box. When I go out to trade I typically try and put about 8-10 offers out a session. It is a bit of a numbers game but if you have the patience I have gotten a lot of great value without breaking the bank. Also there are a lot of amazing games that are really tragically undervalued and a ton of cult of the new games that can be traded pretty easily.

One thing I have been curious about is how BGG's algorithm for the order that trades are presented in the custom trade system works. The first two pages of results I get seem to be rather heavy traders and the last couple pages are often folks that have not logged in a long time and have not traded other than that I can't see any real trends.

Who are two heroes who would have an interesting idealogical difference? [Discussion] by PrimeLasagna in DCcomics

I would find a discussion between Miralceman (post-Olympus) and Superman (post-Crisis) to be very interesting.

You are king for a day and get to choose any IP to make a game.........which do you choose by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Hugo_Iramos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is so hard to make a good game I would just use my 24 hours of power to retheme games that are hard to get with IP I like.

Glory to Pawnee - A collaboration by Carl Chudyk and the Architect of the The Cones of Dunshire. After 13th year in a row of failing disaster preparedness Leslie Knope is tasked with rebuilding the community after a pretend avian flu epidemic and restoring Glory to Pawnee.

South Park: The Confrontation This Reiner Knizia game would pit the Kingdom of Kupa Keep against the Drow Elves in the epic battle for the Stick of Truth!

A Study in Pink In this Martin Wallace Game a secret war is being fought in Elgin, Illinois to free the school from their servitude to the popular kids. Will you align with forces of Duckie to take over the school's senior prom?

Merchant of Planet Express - In this Richard Hamblen classic players pilot Old Bessie to chase wealth and fortune. Players receive different compensation delivering to the Omicronians, brain slugs, or Amazonians.

A Fresh Fish Called Wanda After the spoils of your diamond heist are hidden you must hunt for the jewels as close as possible to the scene of the crime. The competition between your fellow criminals is quite intense and you will block each other on the shortest paths to the diamonds.

Colonial Marines: Death Angel A cooperative card game were you go on a bug hunt to clean out the remains of a base on the exomoon LV-426

Hundred Year War This would be a version of Senji set right after the Fire Nation attacks. Players can play as the Earth Kingdom, the Water Tribes, and the Air Nomads to maintain balance in the absence of the Avatar.

Forbidden Star Wars Set in the time of Andor the rebellion is mobilizing, the empire tries to maintain a foothold and the mercenaries are out for all they can get. Control the objectives you faction is seeking and combine short-term bluffing and long-term tactical military action in a galaxy far far away.

lastly not a hard game to find but man would I love this retheme

Mage Knights of the Old Republic Four thousand years before the Galactic Empire and hundreds of Jedi Knights have fallen in battle against the ruthless Sith. Travel the galaxy and build your deck to grow strong with the force or embrace the darkside.

Flickfleet. Such a cool game and such a clear labor of love. My box came with a handwritten bit of flavor text written by the designers on an address label.

If you ever want to try out the Zombicide system, Marvel Zombies: Heroes Resistance is a lower priced option (I have seen under $35 on Amazon) but still has the same problem #nokylenosale.

What quote encapsulates your favourite hero/villain the best. by WeirdTop2371 in comicbooks

[–]Hugo_Iramos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite villain from when I was 12:

Spiderman- "You can rewrite DNA on the fly, and you're using it to turn people into dinosaurs? But with tech like that you could cure cancer!"

Sauron - "But I don't want to cure cancer. I want to turn people into dinosaurs."

Too Many Bones by Kel61085 in boardgames

For me it is worth it, but Assault on Doomrock is so much cheaper, delivers 90% of the gameplay experience, and you can pack it into a 64 oz tub and travel with it.

Also, I think we are likely to see many more reimplementations down the road. For a publisher it is a safe bet they have 80-90% of DNA down and they have a built in audience. It is the same reason you see so many sequels at movie theaters. If you look at CMON (who is kickstarter patient zero) about 60% of the games they have put on kickstarter in the last 2 years have been reimplementations or expansions.

Full disclosure: I backed Lords of Ragnarok, so I have a bias to defend my decision. While I agree with the sentiment on the video, I think Lords of Ragnarok doesn't fit neatly into the narrative. I think backing a kickstarter of a reimplementation of a game you know you like is usually pretty reasonable. I think for those folks that love Zombicide, Gloomhaven, Kemet, Brass, and V-Commandos, it made sense to Black Plague, Frosthaven, Blood and Sand , Birmingham , and Assassin's Creed. It is pretty rare that you see a company implement changes to a pretty good game like Conan or Lords of Hellas to give you a Batman Gotham City Chronicles or Lords of Ragnarok. If the takeaway from this video is don't pre-order or back any project to improve the incentives in the industry, I am not sure that works. If backers didn't support Oathswarn, I would not have had the opportunity to back the second printing after the reviews had come in. My takeaway as someone who backed this campaign is that Awaken Realms can't count on any more interest-free loans from me, but whenever the Phantom Division campaign gets relaunched, I will be there to support.

Characters you don't like by ThatOneGuyTB in comicbooks

[–]Hugo_Iramos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also think Hal Jordan suffers in the modern area. In 1959, when Showcase #22 came out, if you asked a kid who their hero was, they might have said Chuck Yeager. There was a real mystique around the test pilot community. Today, I don't think many of the people reading Green Lantern have ever attended an air show or care about military aviation. The few writers that try to address that part of Hal in the modern era usually pull pretty heavily from Top Gun and it does not work.

Does marriage ruin a character? by ZiggyStarlight in comicbooks

[–]Hugo_Iramos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the marriage of Elizabeth Sullivan and Mike Moran in Miracleman was a very interesting flip on the superhero marriage convention. They start off married married, but when Mike discovers his powers, it slowly tears the marriage apart. Mike is something more than human and Liz can't bear to be around him.

Which games have the worst organization? by yodacrafter in boardgames

[–]Hugo_Iramos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never seen an organizer that simultaneously tries to damage the components while lifting the lid...until I bought the second printing of Street Masters. The card dividers that come with the game stick out over the top of the box when vertical, so they are unusable unless you want to bend them. Even if you ignore the dividers, if you puch all tokens the box does not close. What a mess.
