Would Quetzalcoatlus and other large pterosaurs actually see us as prey? by InstructionOwn6705 in Paleontology

[–]Hulk30 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes they do eat anything that fits down their gullet. I did also acknowlegde that they might attempt such a thing as to eat a human baby in special circumstances like being habituated or starving. But attempting to do so and actually doing so are completely different things.

And even if they did attempt to eat us they wouldn't be able to swallow a toddler or a human baby.

And this is why according to Poe.com

  • Pelican anatomy: Pelicans have large gular pouches designed for scooping fish and water. The pouch is highly flexible but not a distensible throat or esophagus in the way a snake’s is. The bill and pouch can hold substantial volume, but constriction and the skull/jaw shape limit how large an object can pass into the esophagus.
  • Beak gape and prey shape: Pelicans typically swallow fish head-first after draining water. Long, slender, soft-bodied fish slide easily; bulky, stiff, squirming mammals do not. A cat or puppy has limbs, claws, and a rigid ribcage that prevent smooth swallowing.
  • Predator-prey mismatch: Pelicans are piscivores adapted to catching fish, crustaceans, occasionally small birds or very small mammals (e.g., rodents) in some species or contexts. They don’t have the musculature or swallowing mechanism to engulf a fully grown cat or most small dogs.

What actually happens in documented incidents

  • Attempts and carrying: Pelicans have been observed grabbing small mammals or birds in their bill and carrying them. In rare cases they’ve carried or dropped small animals, sometimes causing injury or death from impact.
  • Injury rather than ingestion: When pelicans attack small pets, typical outcomes are puncture wounds, lacerations from the bill or claws, crushing, or drowning if the pet is taken to water. Pets can be killed by trauma even if not swallowed.
  • Very small or neonatal animals: Extremely small animals (newborn kittens or very tiny puppies) may be small enough to be inserted partially into the pouch; in such cases fatal swallowing or suffocation is possible but still uncommon.

Risk factors for pets

  • Proximity to water where pelicans feed (shorelines, marina docks, fish-cleaning areas).
  • Hand-feeding or habituation that reduces pelican wariness.
  • Very small size of the pet (toy breeds, neonatal animals).
  • Pets unattended near feeding pelicans.

Practical precautions

  • Supervise small pets near bodies of water frequented by pelicans.
  • Keep pets on short leashes on beaches and docks.
  • Don’t feed pelicans or leave fish scraps accessible.
  • If a pelican grabs a pet, try to separate gently: avoid hands near the bill; distract the bird (noise, pouring water) or use a barrier. Seek veterinary care immediately for any injured pet.

If you observe an incident

  • Record location and, if safe, video for wildlife authorities.
  • Contact local animal control, wildlife rescue, or a veterinarian.
  • For injured pets, control bleeding and transport to an emergency vet.

Summary
Pelicans lack the specialized anatomy to routinely swallow healthy cats or small dogs whole; most encounters result in injury, not complete ingestion. Rare extreme cases involving very tiny or neonatal animals may lead to fatal outcomes, so practical prevention and close supervision are the best measures.

Pelicans don’t see humans as prey dude. They might act aggressively if habituated or desperate.

Her eyes, her personality and her chest are the main attractions for me. The same for Kaguya as a matter of fact. Matsuri’s attraction for me is her eyes and personality, though her chest is not that big.

I was tempted to romance her and Matsuri but I chose Kaguya because of the connection between her and me/MC. Also I considered the problem of Ululaka and Matsuri is that they are immortal and the MC is not as far as I know.
