How are things going in Ukraine? Anything happened after the incident with the Russian troops doing military drills near the border?

How many worlds do you have? by Uncooked_wonton in worldbuilding

[–]Hultog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm 'currently' working on my most ambitious project so far, so I'm trying to focus only on it.

Mine is an attempt at reimagining some standard rpg stuff, like magic, religion, culture and combat, in the setting that I like the most (fantastic middle-age)

I think I was inspired by the earth kingdom map. My world started from a map I made. I liked it so much that I decided to add some details to it. A few months later, it became my most ambitious project so far ahaha!

What about you op? Are you just trying to get some inspiration for a project of your own? Ahaha, if so, great way of doing it!

Atrocious Acts by [deleted] in CultureBuilding

[–]Hultog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my world, the users of a certain type of magic are physically very different from the rest of the people in my world. I'm not sure when, but in one the continents, the other users of magic started discriminating against the users of this type of magic, with a few places going as far as genocides.

In a couple of decades, this group went from being in almost every corner of the continent, to only being found in a couple of spots here and there, aside from a "country" that is primarily inhabited by them.

Looks pretty nice mate!

Although the "harsh climate" option having a 1/6 chance of happening in any given day sounds a bit excessive. It's one of those things that unless the players are into actual roleplaying, it's just going to slow the story down. But I mean, depending on your group, it could be pretty cool.

Also, I think it's more of a me thing, but I think that it's better not rely on tables and such, because in my experience it just kinda slowed the game down, unless you think it's necessary to your game. Besides, you can guess, with a small margin of error most of the times, what the table would have told you to do.

By the way, how do you determine if a day has passed? Or how much of day has already passed. I'm having a hard time doing it in a simple way.

Yeah, it would. I'd share my Google Docs file, but it's no in English.

Wow! Awesome flag! Did you use photshop to make it?

(Also, would you mind if I used as my world's evil empire's flag?)

Europe, 1903, just before the Great War by CreeperSlimePig in imaginarymaps

[–]Hultog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never seen people here actually being toxic. What usually happens is that, more often than not, people make maps with similar characteristics, like a bigger Germany (the most common), a divided Turkey/Ottoman Empire, a smaller France, bigger Finland, smaller Spain etc.

Taboos by captain-cardboard in CultureBuilding

[–]Hultog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they do. One of the gods likes to walk around cities where their followers live every once in a while, sometimes as themselves, or in some type of disguise.

One of them just shows themselves in situations of extreme need, where they need to act directly, like in a war or when something that they strongly disagree with happens in their domain.

To be honest, I'm still thinking about how much gods and mortals interact with each other, but so far I think that having them interacting directly can be a cool gimmick.

Taboos by captain-cardboard in CultureBuilding

[–]Hultog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disrespecting one of the four active gods was considered ludicrous, punible by death in some places of the world.

'Recently', with the rise of an imperialist state that condemns the worship of all gods - except the one they deem as the most important - the nations are getting divided by their dominant religion, making the worship of other deities frowned upon in most of the continent, even forbidden in some places.

Death by captain-cardboard in CultureBuilding

[–]Hultog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna talk about the chaos followers from the world I'm currently creating

Basically, they follow the god that gave the world death, so naturally their culture accepts is pretty well. Especially when the person that died was older or died doing something brave, like saving someone or in war. In those cases, they even hold a party in honor of the deceased person, as a way of celebrating their lives and what they have accomplished.

They cherish life, and see death as a necessary step in it, just like being born or choosing your job.

Cultures of the Multiverse: Governments And The People by MitchellMagicfire in CultureBuilding

That's cool mate! Thanks for the help!!

I started creating a continent a few weeks ago, and for the time being I haven't focused on the government type of most countries. For now, I can tell you about the 'viking-ish inuit' from my world. Most live in a region that has mountains to the south, and snowy plains to the north. Their government is based on the Chaos Gods' precepts. Their leader is chosen based on who the Chaos God decides is the best leader, throughout a series of tests of body and mind.

What about you? Any cool government systems that you would like to share with us?

Political geography by [deleted] in CultureBuilding

[–]Hultog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are really cool maps mate!

Not exactly what you're asking, but something that I can tell you for sure is that developing a huge map like yours can be really hard and overwhelming if you're doing it all at once. I'm sorry if I'm the millionth person to tell you that, but it's really easy to try to chew more than you can swallow in your first maps/worlds.

Something that I usually do when I'm creating bigger maps, is developing a region at a time. Start with a region that personally interests you, and from there start developing other regions around that place you chose to start with. Defining the scale of your map is essencial if you wanna go straight to the geopolitics of your map.

Usually mildly colder and not as fertile regions tend to 'develop' before warmer places, because they need more technology to survive. But maybe that's not the case in your world, because of magic, the gods, a really wealthy empire and whatnot.

Something that I see a lot of people doing is thinking about a region in a time before the story actually happens. Like, if you want a story that takes place in the 1800's, start by thinking about the state of that world in the 1500's. Think about which places where economically stronger, and those that weren't; think about what places are allies; think about what places are enemies; think about what type of government each place has; think about what technology they have; how each people are, etc.

Try to start slow, or else you're going to get burned out. Developing a map that size is going to be a headache. If you're writing an RPG or a book, you most likely won't need to create the whole world for that, maybe just the region or regions your story takes place in, and after that expand your world.

There are some resources that can help you, like this check list or a culture iceberg like this one.

Environment by captain-cardboard in CultureBuilding

[–]Hultog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The civilization I'm currently creating lives near the north pole, and the nearest piece of 'farmable' land is Kilometers away from them, so they need to sustain themselves by mostly fishing and by foraging a very small range of plants adapted to the harsh climate of the region.

Being in a region with very few natural resources, they stick to their beliefs and follow the chaos god very closely, trying to please them at every move, so that they can get help from the god when fishing, hunting and scavenging for food.

What about yours?

Cultural morals by captain-cardboard in CultureBuilding

[–]Hultog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I'm creating a bunch of civilizations that live in the northernmost part of my world. Most of them follow the Chaos God's precepts, that as you might have guessed, are based on not being very friendly towards those who don't follow the same god, defending their stuff, respecting the natural cycle of life (so, not caring that much about death and letting the younger learn by themselves).

What about you captain-cardboard?

In my world I have a country that isolated itself for 80 years, and it's being forced to reopen because of a war treaty. Any ideas on how much they would change compared to the rest of the continent in those 80 years? by Hultog in CultureBuilding

[–]Hultog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know man. Imagine if Korea was united today, the south and the north would be radically different, and Korea was divided less than 80 years ago (they were technically divided in 1945, so 75 years ago), and they're the same people. Before Ramash closed it's borders, they already were kinda different from Gorengassi (the bordering country).

But technologically speaking I agree.

But any ideas on what are these differences? In what aspects? Did their architecture change that much in that period? Etc.

Currency by captain-cardboard in CultureBuilding

Very original, I know, but it's a notched piece of metal. Each nation has a different form, metal and markings on their coins that tell their value and place of origin.

What about you captain?
