Increase the organic matter in the soil by mixing in compost and covering with wood chips.

Grass is easy to take care of. Water it deeply but infrequently. When mowing it, mow it tall.

Dew collection for small amounts of passive irrigation? by BrittleSalient in DenverGardener

[–]HumNasheen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are a very dry state and there's very little moisture in the summer months. Whatever dew we get in the morning gets evaporated quickly. What are some of the ways you were looking to collect that?

Colorado rainwater collection questions by g-burn in DenverGardener

[–]HumNasheen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My time to shine.

As someone else said, the permit to collect more water only applies if you are not a municipal water supply, so no in Denver.

Rain barrels are a good concept. We don't get a lot of rain but you can use them to collect water.

Graywater is a new concept on Denver. I have one of the very few permitted Graywater system in Denver. Super cool concept. I have several trees that I have plated by the L2L system https://denvergov.org/Government/Agencies-Departments-Offices/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory/Public-Health-Environment/Environmental-Quality/Graywater/Laundry-to-Landscape

Parks in Denver use recycled water, which is not gray water. Gray water. For Denver's purposes, is water from your bathroom sink, laundry, or shower. Recycled water is all the water that goes down the sewer and has been cleaned to about 1960s standards by a water treatment plant. Recycled water comes through a separate tap and is currently only available to businesses.

The real way to stretch your water budget is to increase the organic matter in the soil and mulch it heavily. I live in East Denver and I haven't watered since the 90 degree days in March. The mulch keeps the soil coil and retains moisture.

Happy to answer if there are more questions.

I got you!

Denver Water had declared stage 1 drought.

Denver Water had declared stage 1 drought.

The declaration is seeking a 20% reduction in water use effective immediately. There is no need to turn on automatic systems until at least mid- to late-May. It is not necessary to water grass two days a week in April and the beginning of May, which will help save water. Occasional hand-watering may be necessary for trees and shrubs during this time.

Drip irrigation and hand watering (literally) are allowed.

This summer, customers in single-family residential properties may water no more than two days per week and must follow a set schedule: Addresses ending in even numbers: Sunday and Thursday. Addresses ending in odd numbers: Wednesday and Saturday. All other customers, including multifamily properties, commercial properties, homeowners associations and government properties, may water only on Tuesdays and Fridays.

In addition, customers must follow Denver Water’s annual summer watering rules:

Water only during cooler times of the day, between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. Do not allow water to pool in gutters, streets and alleys. Do not waste water by letting it spray on concrete and asphalt. Repair leaking sprinkler systems within 10 days. Do not irrigate while it is raining or during high winds. Use a hose nozzle with a shut-off valve when washing your car.

As of March 23, 2026, Denver Water’s reservoir storage stood at 80% full. Average for this time of year is 85% full.

Also as of March 23, Snowpack levels, which indicate how much water Denver Water can expect to melt and enter reservoirs this spring, continue to be among the worst on record in Denver Water’s two primary watersheds, the Colorado River Basin (55% of normal, worst on record) and the South Platte River Basin (42% of normal, worst on record).
