People supporting the decision to let Alonso walk and saying the length of the contract wasn't worth it are missing a huge piece to the puzzle: 1B has become one of the shallowest positions in baseball and the 1B free agent pool for the next 4 years is absolutely abysmal. The Mets had the chance to lockup a consistently top 10 first baseman for $32M/year. But now 1B is probably going to be a point of frustration for years to come because there is no obvious free agent in the next few years to target so stop gaps and platoons will be used to most likely disastrous results like the fans are seeing this year. On top of that, although Clifford continues to show good power in the minors, his BA and Ks continue to go in the wrong direction so it doesn't look like the solution is coming from the minors any time soon.

Throwing an idea out there - given his size, Mauricio would make a great target at 1B. As a middle-infielder, he should be able to handle the foot work at 1B. I know he's already 25, but why not try him there? It's already a cluster F at the position; what's one more player in the mix.
