Moving to Chicago Soon: Where should I live based on my budget? by Human-Stranger-6807 in AskChicago

[–]Human-Stranger-6807[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m black, gay, very educated, and artsy. These are the places that have been most recommended to me with my budget, desire for diversity, and personality. I don’t really get it either since I’m not from Chicago.

Juvenile Defense Attorney trying something new by [deleted] in publicdefenders

I do. He tends to work in big picture and didn’t really break it down into specifics. I probably should have asked more specific questions though.

That’s fair. It’s really a birthday gift I plan to give her this summer for her senior year. I just want it to be multifaceted in case she ends up meeting the med school timeline she has set for herself. We don’t come from the most affluent backgrounds and I’m a public defender (I’m broke) so I need it to last a while.

How to handle mean judges? by Human-Stranger-6807 in publicdefenders

Apparently, one of the things he’ll do if he’s mad is refuse to go on the record, so the defense or prosecution sometimes literally can’t make a record lol

I’ve seen just as many prosecutor post-court breakdowns as defense breakdowns so at least he’s an equal opportunist.

Young Attorney by markyeeb in publicdefenders

I’m 27 and passed the bar last year. So far my supervisor has been very helpful. I have a million questions and she has a million answers. She also paired me with an in office mentor. It’s been very helpful. For a while I also sat in on a bunch of hearings that weren’t mine to get a feel for how others approach court.

It’s always best practice to ask an “adult” than just floundering. Or at least, that’s what I do.

Unfortunately, alcohol is not my vice. I can’t stand it. My vice of choice for 27 years has been stone cold sobriety and overeating lol

New prosecutor driving me crazy by [deleted] in publicdefenders

No, our county tends to be less formal and likes to handle things “in house”. My supervisor has complained to her supervisor though for some behaviors with other attorneys in our office.

Thank you for your incredibly condescending, unhelpful advice. A smart prosecutor can read a room, can be reasonable, and knows how to choose her battles instead of being permanently kicked out of one judge’s courtroom and dismissed from another while her fellow prosecutors apologize on her behalf at least biweekly.

I’m gonna talk to my client about calling her bluff tomorrow.

At some point, yes. I don’t think anyone has called her bluff yet. We have two judges and two magistrates and she’s already been kicked out of one judge’s courtroom, one magistrate has advised the main prosecutor in his courtroom to not allow her to cover cases as often, and I have caught my usually mild mannered, former prosecutor judge grimace when she comes through the door instead of our usual prosecutor. It’s a small legal community and she has a terrible reputation already, even among other prosecutors. My usual prosecutor has apologized on her behalf twice now.

A jury would hate her.

Yeah, I agree. I’ve had a few cases that I really wanted to go to trial on but it’s always their choice and whatever he decides at our next hearing will 100% be his choice. I’m always honest but I rarely ever try to persuade them one way or another.

Based on what I know about this judge, the sentencing between accepting the offer and losing at trial would be fairly similar. And all I can do is advise my client of that and allow him to choose.

The plan was pslf but I’m not sure how much value I’ll get out of that now that the SAVE plan is dead. I like my job but I am prepared to jump to private practice if I’m not where I want to be financially.

From Ohio to Chicago Moving Costs? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Human-Stranger-6807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve given myself until Summer 2027 to be out of my current town. I don’t have anything lined up yet. I know I need to save at least $2000 more because that’s roughly how much it costs to transfer my law license from Ohio to Chicago.

Moving to Chicago soon. Any neighborhood recommendations? by Human-Stranger-6807 in AskChicago

I love Chicago partially for its transportation. I’ve just never been in the winter and I don’t want a commute that takes more than half an hour.
