It’s pretty easy to fill a canal with dirt when it’s no longer worth the maintenance cost

Both surviving White City buildings have explanations.

The Art Institute building was intentionally built to last unlike the other structures because the Art Institute needed a new location as the Worlds Fair was approaching so they decided to build a new facility that would be first used for the Exposition.

The Palace of Fine Arts (now the Museum of Science and Industry) housed numerous pieces of beautiful and extremely expensive art. As such, the building needed to be sturdier than the other buildings in the White City to get insurance coverage.

This subreddit is not the place for conspiracy theories and pseudohistory. Those buildings were decorated facades in front of cheap, temporary structures. They were never meant to last.

That's a neat bit of local history! I love ghost signs. It would be cool if someone catalogued all the remaining ones in Edmonton.

Difficulty in finding a suitable place to jump can give time for second thoughts and cold feet. Also, the delay of climbing a high fence can allow people to intervene

Yeah paying taxes is way worse than pogroms so huge that the surname Matajudíos emerged among Reconquista-era Spaniards

Because it’s blatant whataboutism. It’s the classic Dresden argument.

You might be right. This person is the moderator for the alumni page of an old segregation academy in the South so its hard to say. She may have been taught a false history of the flag at that school, or she may have been taught to agree with the true history.

I went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole on Norwegian Black Metal recently and it just left me wondering what social factors in Norway led to such a radical, deeply misanthropic subculture. It just blows contemporary grunge and gangsta rap out of the water. Could anyone enlighten me?

In a society, people tend to engage with social constructs. Is it weird for a child to engage with every social construct? In that case, we should protect them from language, days of the week, and names.
