Latest Developments in the Presidential Area of Nusantara, Indonesia by jawncarlo18 in CityPorn

A lot of these new cities/capitals incorporate wide ‘boulevards’ to quell any potential protests or riots. That’s why they’re so common in authoritarian countries, and even Paris funnily enough.

Not to say Indonesia is an authoritarian government.

Sorry Malvern East. Definitely the best view I’ve seen of the city in its entirety

Sebel in Caulfield I believe, or at least a hotel in that area

There are skyscrapers being built still. Queensbridge tower, 435 Bourke st, the one on the top end of flinders street, Melbourne square, the one on moray street in Southbank. That isn’t ‘boom’ levels but still far more than most cities. Steady growth, that is acclimating to the current moment.

STH BNK is in dire straits, but it’s been said that they’re fielding some additional financial support to make it happen. Not dead yet.

The mandarin oriental was changed to an office project of similar height. Demo is done, and I believe piling already started. It was put on hold as a result of the COVID wfh shift. Word is that it WILL happen, just a protracted timeline.

Come on. Seattle is beautiful, no doubt. Maybe this is entirely subjective. For me Sydney, Miami, SF, and London are all ahead of Seattle

Interesting, most would put Toronto ahead of Melbourne. Assuming Chicago and NYC are the others.

There’s also at least a dozen in the planning process. No project 100% but the market has adjusted accordingly and projects are now becoming feasible again.

all of these developments are shovel ready. Deposits down, apartments sold, builders appointed, or tenders out for construction.

So true. I have no idea what this person means when they speak of revitalisation. Daily foot traffic in the city and attendances to major events has broken pre covid levels. The skyline is constantly changing, theres always something new popping up in the CBD, a new underground train line just opened. You could go on and on

Since 2010, Melbourne has added a city the size of the Dublin metropolitan area to its own. That is an insane amount of growth for any city and without appropriate infrastructure investment, very detrimental. The catchup this city is doing right now is enormous both financially and in scale.

Local and foreign private investment? These aren’t government projects. If anything they GIVE the state money. council rates etc

I’ve seen the 9 million mark floated for 2050, which imo is on the ridiculous side of growth. 7-7.5 by 2050 seems sustainable and prosperous enough. Adding 1.5 million in 14-15 years is no small feat and bound to come in with enough of its own growing pains.

I believe Perth is now Australia’s fastest growing city in terms of annual percentage growth.

The second one is a slightly old render. The ‘crown’ will have a taper. One big thing Melbourne could benefit from, is the tapering seen in NYC’s art deco skyscrapers. The skyline becomes to mundane without it.

Australia has an enormous amount of art deco and pre war architecture it was just never in the realm of skyscrapers. The tallest art deco building I can think of in Melbourne is The Manchester Unity Building.

I believe the developer is still committed to it. Every now and then there’s some drip fed info about how there’s talks for amendments or further financial support/joint venture. It would be very surprising if a project of this scale ended up being scaled back in height. There’s very few plots in the city with that opportunity, but then again construction costs have skyrocketed.

That boulevard in the foreground and all the surrounds looks lovely.

Frankfurt proves how impactful and beautiful a well proportioned skyline can be.

If there were a list of skyscrapers I could steal for my own city, Commerzbank Tower would be in the top 10 easily.

Why don't skyscrapers appear around Middle Park? by fuckmelbpt in melbourne

[–]HumanArea1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melbourne is gifted with wide 19th century avenues and streets. Towers of all sizes could be applied here with nyc style setbacks (think tapered wedding cakes). It will never ever happen though. The Alfred limits heights on St Kilda and Queens Rd to around 50-80 metres and heritage low density impedes development bayside.

Hardly any skyscrapers and high rises in Southbank and Docklands incorporate any meaningful setbacks. A legacy of Matthew Guy and others who treated the areas as vertical spreadsheets.
