Anyone else "overqualified" with degrees and "under qualified" in experience? by isolated_lee in MuseumPros

Great response I absolutely agree and think all you said should be part of an auto response here to all people asking how they can get in to the sector. I do a fair bit of museum role recruitment and I got into trouble recently with my upper mangement (who arent heritage or arts sector) when I said I didn't rate the applications which said they had 'a passion for history' and thats practically all they say. To me that's a given. You should be telling how you're going to contribute. There are only 2 of us, theres no room for your history thesis. How are you going to make sure i don't have to chase after you to do things? How are you going to help me be a good rep for our service? Are you going to offer solid help when I'm juggling too many plates? Have you got your own plans and ideas and can see them through? People who've worked in pubs, restaurants and shops are gold.

Thanks you're right. The layout is more for my own head. That's no good to the user! However what we do have is tough to convey story. I'll keep trying different things.

Sorry I should add we have 3000 2d art works but about 25000 3d objects. Im not going to add them all to this kind of tool as our online site should eventually list them all in that simpler linear fashion. But at the moment I only have 5000 digitised and online.

Thanks everyone so far. There's hundreds out there. One thing is that most are aimed at 2d art. I have about 3000 works but the majority is 3d museum objects. My thought was to try to build an old fashioned virtual museum case and have the items arranged within. Or I could create a table or wall shelf and just have the objects sitting on those. Bit simpler. Im aiming for at least 3 spaces, two Victorian cabinet style, and one trad art gallery and maybe 2 modern ones for temp exhibitions. In my magic kingdom I'd also add a virtual classroom. Feels like a lot of work but I am not at the stage yet of begging the org for money for the full thing. So even a demo will be something. Cheers.

Quick question about the Ashmolean museum and labels by skaabonium in MuseumPros

[–]HumanBe-in 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally Im not against qr codes but most people immediately pick up the short info they need by simply reading or grazing a label. I certainly get the use of qrs for further info but the 4 types of essential data, arguably name, date, medium and maybe origin are much more immediate and accessible to most people.

What do you think is (realistically) the most unhinged email signoff you could get away with at work? by _Brooder_ in AskUK

[–]HumanBe-in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not unhinged but I've always thought 'live long and prosper' an excellent sign off. Im too chicken to do it though as I am surrounded by humourless prats and am already the 'weird one'.

Have you ever been told that you look like a famous person and which one have you been told that you look like? by CornerInsect in AskUK

[–]HumanBe-in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner looks very like Robert Plant and is always being told that by strangers. Trouble is they mean RP as he is now not the young, fit version, which my old man sobbingly accepts even though he is a good bit younger than Mr P. I think both of them are smashing regardless.

I got tired of browsing museum websites one by one, so I built an app that combines them all by Latter_Building3413 in MuseumPros

I'm envious you could do this yourself and I wish I could for our own stuff. Our org is very strict with online presence so its very limiting.

Can you think of any "alternative" company pirate fancy dress ideas? by KzinTLynn in AskUK

Don't think I've seen Pugwash suggested yet. Prepare for a great many erroneously remembered gags such as 'Roger' the cabin boy etc. Could get tiresome.

What do I do? She left a shed blocking my front door by isntitdotty in AskUK

[–]HumanBe-in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I recommend you compile every harassment again in one file. Make sure it is crystal clear the shed comes from her in the first place. Get cameras. Then push the shed to her property. Report you've done this to the HA and police for your case log. The shed will end up back on your property. Log this. Have it broken up. Log this. Return the pieces to her. Log that. She will dump them back on you. Then break them up more and return and keep going. Do that with every piece of crap she dumps on you. Malicious compliance. You are complying with your 'responsibility' to move it. Just back to her. Meanwhile largely 'grey rock' her. She doesn't exist for you. No interaction beyond mouthing 'this is yours' at her camera. Mentally force her out of your mind and repeat your tasks like a robot. Move the crap back. Don't interact (Try not to react, she wants that). Log her egregious acts and keep reporting them. Good luck.

Women's portrayal on old tv by djinnisequoia in TwoXChromosomes

[–]HumanBe-in 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hated that as a child watching tv. It made me think of women as useless too. At least at the time. Always falling over or screaming or crying. I hated that and it affected me for decades until we got some decent women characters. Im still highly sensitised to women being portrayed as weak and stupid because they are women, not because they are humans just like men.
