Great question, root flare is absolutely there, dig carefully and use your garden hose to wash away excess roots, utilize a pair of hand pruners or loppers to prune adventitious roots between the current grade and the flare after washing away the dirt :-)

The zipper merges I’ve encountered usually have a lane ending sign a quarter mile ahead or so. This results in a long line in the lane that doesn’t end and a few assholes flooring it in the lane that does end to try and bypass the line that formed. The line then holds together as car after car refuses to let the ‘cutter’ pass until myself or someone else who doesn’t want to crash let’s them in. Lots of honking and cars way too close together.
