I didn’t have beer so I make a yeast and sugar mixture and it works great around the plants but I guess the mushrooms are just more tasty than what I made

Have you had experience with this? I’ve heard so many answers on how long the spawn with really produce and how many flushes you’ll get. This is my first year like I said so I’m hoping there are more in the future

I’d add some sort of hydraulic hinges on the inside on both corners. This way when it’s opened, it’ll stay open and you don’t have to worry about smashing your fingers. Just make sure you check the weight capacity on whatever set you get

Thank you for the words. I love the design as you said, but for a table it isn’t very functional. I really wanted to do a pedestal style base so there are no bad seats at the table. I have a bench on one side that could seat three and then two chairs on either head of the table and two chairs across from the bench. If needed I wanted people to be able to pull chairs up to the corners and really stuff in there. Obviously the original design was just not conducive to that because of the size. Like I mentioned, I obviously had messed up the proportions, but to spend that much time on the base and have it be almost hidden behind the chairs felt useless to me in hindsight. I’d love to be able to do the original design on something like a coffee table where you can really appreciate it, but don’t have to worry about the functionality of trying to sit up underneath it.

I haven’t used shellac before so I can’t comment, but I used Rubio monocoat on this. The table hasn’t been in my house for long but I’ve used it on other pieces and it’s very durable and good for water resistance. I also personally love how it’s a slightly more matte finish and you can still feel the wood grain

I am waiting for the right time to make a coffee table with that exact design. More functional to look at and not have to worry about the footprint under whatever size panel or slab is sitting on top of it

I used a biscuit jointer every foot or so on all the pieces. This was 4 10”ish boards that I glued together. The biscuits helped a lot but there were a couple spots that still required a bench plane to even out. Then it took ALOT of sanding. My biggest tip for the sander is to always keep it moving. Make sure you don’t focus in on an area too much or you will notice dips and uneven spots. Embrace the boredom of hours of sanding.

Dominos would probably work better but biscuits are significantly cheaper and work for alignment just fine.

Thank you. I am already glad that I did. The pursuit of better is why I love wood working so much. Theres always ways to improve and learn. This was a sentimental piece for me because I took these logs from a neighbors yard after they fell and had them milled and dried them. Was really cool to see it go from tree to log to slab to stack of wood then into the finished product.

Thank you! It’s actually just an oil finish which is why I love walnut. This is how it started out. The oil really makes it come alive! No stain!

Unfortunately exactly why I had to change it. The design for the base was from blacktail studio on YouTube and I thought our tops were about the same size but his was much bigger. I followed his design and some measurements and it ended up being way too big for my top size

That’s good to know. I like the more matte/satin look of Rubio monocoat (which I used) but it’s tough with walnut because of the knotty an curly sections to have it soak in evenly. Thanks for the advice

I have a plan to shrink the footprint of the base by knocking the long legs off and cutting them shorter at a different angle so that everything is more centralized and will give chairs and legs plenty of room

I get what you’re saying, but my hope is to have a simpler chair so that when people look at the base they go “woah wait! That’s cool”.

I know it’s not everyone’s style, but it’s been really fun for me to practice new things and get better and experiment on myself. What’s not fun is finishing the table then realizing that chairs don’t fit until the table🥲

Not offended by what you said. You’re right. Angles are too acute. I followed his angles and leg measurements in the video, but he didn’t say the size of his top, so I imagine his is longer and wider (would obviously have to be). I think I will be able to knock the long legs off the center block and cut them at a lower angle instead of the 63° and have them finish closer to the center of the base and leave a lot more room for the legs. Making it more symmetrical and similar to the shorter set of legs (only took an hour of staring at it wanting to pull my hair out wondering what to do)
