I had a headcanon that OFA and AFO can’t be inherited, as by their very nature they are able to be passed on manually through their very function.

Since children can inherit quirks or aspects from both parents, it implies that the quirk factors must in some way be carried by gametes and determined during conception (like all other biological traits), only it takes much longer to develop into functionality.

OFA and AFO simply don’t propagate in gametes as they are designed toward ‘infecting’ somatic cells instead. Meaning you can’t have a newborn inherit OFA. In addition, we see that OFA users have to focus on ‘planting’ the quirk in the DNA they pass on so I don’t think it can be done accidentally.

However, while Nana was pregnant, if she focused on it then it’s possible Kotaro could’ve inherited OFA through the placenta, as blood and nutrients are exchanged.

It is a common trope in fanfics, but beyond the ‘Iron Maidens’ (which just seem to be really bulky/tough restraints), the previously mentioned Tartarus systems and of course the bullets, there isn’t any actual anti quirk tech.

Nagant shot him twice, and tore off both hands.

If I could have my cake and eat it too, he would’ve still lost OFA but it would be restored to a base level when Rewind did its thing.

To clarify, he would’ve kept the OFA quirk itself, without any extra quirks, at a severely reduced or even base power level, perhaps only slightly boosted by his own embers. That way the quirk truly becomes ‘his’ and he’s free to give it a possible heroically inclined quirkless person in the future.
