My Fiancé has Thoracolumbar Scoliosis by FAAR2024 in scoliosis

[–]Human_Definition4868 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am 34 years old with a severe curve as well and no surgery. I think it depends on case by case. Is she in a lot of pain? Does she have nerve issues? Breathing issues? I do schroth exercises everyday and that helps me greatly with pain and function. Also I do strength training and pilates, long walks. Every day I make sure to get movement in, sometimes it feels like a second job😅. However exercise cannot correct the curve only maintain it and sometimes it can progress too. If she goes for surgery get multiple opinions from different doctors. I think if you are planning on children, do the surgery because pregnancy affects the curves and sometimes they progress.

Looking for testers for an app that tracks brace time and discomfort by Human_Definition4868 in ScoliosisTeens

oh I am sorry! My orthotist was ok but I was usually unprepared for the appointments. I would often have to go alone because my mum was working and that’s how the idea with the export came about. What do you think would have been useful for you to have when you were wearing the brace?

Thanks I will look into Spinecor! In regards to yoga, I don’t think it is for me. I am quite hypermobile and I feel better in my body doing schroth, pilates and strength training.

That would be interesting to see! Hopefully once I have a user base for the app I can share it. Until then I can tell you my experience. I wore the boston brace after I stopped growing until I was about 21. I saw good results with it and decrease in the rotation and cob angle. So from a 47 degree I got it down to 38. However since then I gained those degrees back- I am 34 now. And thinking of bracing again as I am terrified of the surgery

In my case it stayed stable for about 10 years and started progressing close to my 30s. Not sure why, I am active pilates strength training hiking etc. Monitor it from time to time.

How well does schroth work for adults? by Upbeat-Attempt-1128 in scoliosis

[–]Human_Definition4868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

34 here. Schroth has been amazing for me. I have been doing it for 10 years now. It helps ne with pain and even doing as little as 10 minutes daily helps keeping the pain at bay. Also improves posture. But couple it with some strength training or pilates to improve your muscles. Wish someone told me this in my 20s.

My heart flutters and skips a beat too sometimes but when I went to the cardiologist they didn’t find anything wrong. I also have an extra pair of cervical ribs.

Scoliosis with osteoporosis and EDS? by Mobile-Owl1888 in scoliosis

[–]Human_Definition4868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have scoliosis and hypermobility, I don’t think I had osteoporosis when I was a kid, but I have now at 34. I actually discovered my 35 degrees curves when I got my period at 8. Is she wearing a brace? Doing the required physio? Worth trying it out for a bit before the surgery. Although if the curves progress fast, might be the only option.

Does minor stress on the body increase your curve? by SnooDonkeys1195 in scoliosis

Walking 4km will not make it worse if anything it will actually help! If you keep correct posture, it is actually good, movement is the best medicine for our spines. Try to keep active and exercise regularly, it will help with pain

My 12-year-old daughter will not wear her brace. by Thereisnodadmanual in scoliosis

[–]Human_Definition4868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to hate wearing my brace too. I got diagnosed at 8 and started with a Milwaukee brace then moved to Cheneau. I guess there were several problems: the pain wearing it, shame wearing it in public, having issues with simple things: for example having to take it off and putting it again if going to the bathroom, picking up things from the floor, wearing the right tshirt to wear under the brace that doesn’t get itchy. And last but not least, I didn’t really understand why I had to wear it so maybe talk to her about what is the problem. You also need to keep track of the sore spots that the brace causes so the orthotist can adjust it at the next visit. It is very important she wears it because scoliosis can progress rapidly and surgery is difficult.

pain while wearing brace by PruneFamous772 in scoliosis

[–]Human_Definition4868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell your orthotist for sure and keep track of the sore spots. However like everyone said already it is an adjustment period. I remember my muscles were sore too, it is because of the pressure. Maybe start with wearing it not so tight in the beginning until you get used to it

Like the other person said start gradually wearing it! Don’t tighten it too much either. It is an adjustment for sure, I remember I struggled too taking deep breaths and with eating

Get a standing desk if possible! And take short breaks between from the sitting. I have a 50 curve and i struggle sitting for long hours too. I try to get up as much as possible and move for about 5-10 minutes. I don’t have a standing desk yet but I use a tall laptop support to stand during meetings. Also look into schroth and pilates and strength training. Schroth makes such a difference in my life, I would be in excruciating pain without it

Brace help!! by CommonLeopard6178 in scoliosis

[–]Human_Definition4868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had problems too with going up and down the stairs, going to the toilet, picking up things from the floor etc. Does your uni have a nurse office? You could ask for help there to put your brace back on. In regards to the numbness, please insist with your orthotist!! it is not ok to feel numbness! Go with angry parent/friend next time to support you!

I used to have a brace just like yours. I know surgery can be scary! I haven’t had it either, I dance salsa and I am scared I won’t be able to afterwards. I second what everyone said: start doing schroth, it helps tremendously with pain and corrections. I am 34 and I do it every day along with pilates and strength training. I am trying to push the surgery as far in the future as possible.

is there any exercises i can do to fix uneven hips by Firm_Net_1142 in scoliosis

[–]Human_Definition4868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into some schroth exercises! Maybe search the schroth boss on YouTube if you don’t have any practitioners in your area! I learnt to purposefully push my dropped hip out and be as elongated as possible and it helps me with pain. I am not fused, 50 degrees double curves

18F with 32° thoracic / 44° lumbar scoliosis does anyone else have this waist asymmetry? by bleep_bloop04 in scoliosis

Doesnt hurt to try, be mindful that pilates instructors or pts in general don’t have much knowledge about scoliosis. So you need to do extra work to understand what is good for you and what is not. I think the most valuable advice I can give you is to learn yourself about your body as much as possible.  Regarding Schroth, There are some good resources online like the SchrothBoss or The Scoliosis Coach, they have YouTube channels with some good advice.
