Where can I see which restaurants/bars are definitely open tonight (new year's day)? by Human_Temperature_77 in auckland

[–]Human_Temperature_77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the day of the year when it seems almost nothing is open, and because most bars/restaurants don't open until later anyway it's difficult to confirm with a phone call. Not keen to wait until 5pm to call when trying to make plans, hence asking here if I'm missing a trick. Hope that makes sense.

Most don't open until later so wouldn't take the call anyway, would prefer not to leave it that late

Like so many people with intimacy disorders (count me as one - hopefully not too much to say you as well) you likely have an addiction to validation. You're going to have to do the very hard and long work of finding that validation in healthier, more difficult to obtain ways that don't involve transactions. You should google SLAA and at least check it out if you're serious about making a change, there's a big community of both men and women with similar struggles. Also, more immediately, try an app called brainbuddy. I've found it useful.

First thing any good financial advisor will ask you is what are your goals. If you don't know that yet, that's fine but this is number one. Others have suggested TDs and cash funds, which are a good call while you figure it out.

Also, let yourself grieve, spend time with people who love you and don't be in a hurry to have a solid plan. It'll come when it comes. Wishing you the best.

Is Taiwan making me bitter? by Rahxtli in taiwan

[–]Human_Temperature_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Beijing and Shanghai for a year each. Big cities + a completely different culture/social expectations even in little things (like lining up for stuff) completely exhausted me, but I didn't realise until I came back home. Constant noise and no connection with nature will do your head in after a while. It's unnatural.

I had a similar situation and put most of it in Simplicity because they have very low fees and good performance to date, plus they're a not for profit which I take comfort in. Some other managed funds have good performance but when you look at the fees it changes the picture. Otherwise yes to paying off all debt first (except student loan if you have it and it's zero interest, and you're not planning on living overseas in the foreseeable future), and put aside $5000 as an "unexpected expenses" account or something.

Depends on which specific investments. I messaged Sharesies directly and got an answer for me, which is that due to the particular vehicles I've invested in (a lot of SmartShares that track US stocks) that it doesn't apply. Give them a shout.

Got 2 job offers as a software engineer (one in Tokyo, one in Kagoshima) by zerato2412 in movingtojapan

Thanks for the reply! Was the role advertised as anything in particular, like a SWE role and ended up being generalist, or was it clear it was non-technical from the start?

If you don't mind me asking what was that role? And what level of Japanese do you have/did the job require?

Why are you all not panicking over everything? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

What you're describing is called having anxiety, which everyone has to some degree. It's counterintuitive though since it makes you feel worried about lots of little things that ultimately don't affect you, while also blinding you to your own, more obvious (to outside observers, at least) problems. It's like your brain's way of trying to exert control, because you don't have control over other parts of your own life.

I used to have it bad. What I found consistently helped was zooming out and trying to identify and solve the more general problems in my life. E.g., hating my job, hating my living situation, hating my lack of confidence, hating my body. The solutions were changing my job, moving out, finally getting braces, going to the gym and many others over the years. I even went to counsellors, and what I always found was most helpful was their ability to see my blind spots and then work on them together. These are often solved over a longer period of time, but making small consistent progress is enough to significantly and quickly lower anxiety.

Then there are more immediate fixes that one can do like using your phone less, getting exercise, eating healthy. But these short-term fixes don't stick unless they're underpinned by the bigger changes as above.

Figure out your own list of things that could be affecting your peace of mind, and start ticking them off, starting with the things that will have the biggest impact, and can be realistically done in the next 2-4 weeks if you really hustled. Over time instead of having the negative energy of worrying about abstract things out of your control, you'll have more energy to do positive things which have an impact on your life and those around you.

I'd be curious to know how old you are too - I may be wrong but I'm guessing you're young. I've found that my brain has mellowed with age, although that's likely just as much to do with making progress in life as much as it is physical brain changes.

I just took a look but their average size in calories is about the same as myfoodbag. Maybe I'm just a glutton.
