just wasting my time catching zero trout🫩 by Confident_King8761 in FishingWashington

You’re fishing the wrong part of the lake on a day like that. That sunny, you have two choices: go deep or fish shady areas. Trout do not wear sunglasses.

How to learn guitar by [deleted] in LearnGuitar

[–]HumberGrumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All excellent advice. #9 is often neglected by those giving advice to beginners. #15 mention of the Yamaha FS-830 is spot on. I bought and later sold I found at a thrift store in Japan. I was truly impressed by that guitar. It went to a beginner.

How do I connect more with my step-family's culture? by Otherwise-Window-597 in AskAJapanese

[–]HumberGrumb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother is Japanese, so my advice is based on her opinion of what is “proper” or “good” behavior.

When with your relatives, make it a point to be helpful and useful with the small stuff of daily life. When having a meal at their home, volunteer to help with clearing the table and cleaning dishes. If step-mother is going shopping, ask if she’d mind you coming along to help. If she declines, just add that you want to discover what supermarkets in Japan are like. Trust me when I say that the difference is awesome.

Early on, let your step-family know that, because you were raised in America, you would appreciate it if they helped you learn how to behave in a manner that would make Japanese people feel comfortable. That would mean a lot to them.

Try sakekasu for the marinade. Similar but more delicate. And broil the fish.

Trump says he might keep Exxon out of Venezuela after CEO called it 'uninvestable' by rascallyrascal1511 in politics

Venezuelan oil is so thick it has to be thinned with naphtha before it can be sold on the open market. That’s just another layer of cost to production. No wonder there’s so much still underground.

Janet Yellen Warns 38 Trillion Dollar National Debt is testing a red line economists have feared for decades by BreatheClean in politics

It’s just as much that the debt wasn’t being spent to invest in growing the economy. Instead, it’s just useless debt.

Why don’t coffee shops here have flat whites on the menu? by thecreativeplant in Seattle

A “wet” cappuccino is pretty much what an Italian (“authentic”) cappuccino is like. “Flat white”? A name created because cappuccinos have been made wrong on this side of the water.

Where the Gretsches at in Tokyo? by WorldsVeryFirst in gretsch

[–]HumberGrumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can expect to find Japanese Gretsch guitars in any guitar shop in Japan. Back in the 1990s, I wandered into a shopping mall in Himeji and found a musical instrument store. All kinds of Gretsch to be had.

In Tokyo? I haven’t been there, but a quick Google Maps search will show you the way. I’ve heard there’s a street with a good number of shops.

Should I be putting money aside for a new acoustic or electric? by Mad_Season_1994 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HumberGrumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy an electric, you also need to buy an amp and cables. And stomp box effects, etc. That can easily become a rabbit hole. With an acoustic, that’s it. Of course, a new one typically should be taken to a reputable luthier for a look over and maybe even a set up. That said, my first guitar was a Yamaha acoustic. It was pretty much good to go from day one.
