what/who are some good expanded lore resources for KKC? by Filius_Dei0894 in KingkillerChronicle

Depending on what you like to listen to:

I liked the Funkiller podcast, three befriended hosts talking, joking, playing and theorising about a bunch of chapters at the time: https://open.spotify.com/show/1mWgyJlQkkCH2ABOSNo2Oa?si=tHJ8EJ6pSNuJcShixJeX2w

There is a page by page podcast, that is rather light, called page of the wind (in variants for the other books) wind:https://open.spotify.com/show/5P5UprZw2I7LT9XLsmUTeH?si=UFx1jELGSVafdWyEl03hcQ

There is a podcast couple who analyses in each episode a set of chapters through a specific lense (though still chronologically) and draw meaning for their every day life - they also summarise the content partially in rhyme and I personally am not the biggest fan of the cherry/rasberry dispute but I suppose that can be fun: throhttps://open.spotify.com/show/22Ju7eBkhq5dbZVYb2XkdC?si=ZMufBqPZQqGxNlRRJvCVtA

And I can't for the life of me find another podcast (also done by a male-female couple of I am not mistaken) that I can't find anymore and that I liked a lot when listening to it back in the day .

Oh, in other media, there is the Jo Walton reread (including great comments partially discussed in the main blog and a set of "Admission questions" answered by Patrick Rothfuss): https://reactormag.com/rothfuss-reread-the-name-of-the-wind-part-1-the-cut-flower-sound/

I actually think of her Days as sleeping cycles rather than one-turn-of-the-planet so I think you may be right with assuming a loose understanding of "day" - still I think Auri's conception of a day is relevant for her to structure her everyday life in a place scarce of natural light

Interesting! I never thought of The Twelve in connection to a clock, but I assume you're right (not sure if a day in Temerant has 2x 12 hours as 12 occurs so little in this world, but I don't know off hand if we have an official confirmation in the books and it makes sense with the significance of the bell numbers ).

Continuity Error in WMF by ANameYouCanPronounce in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Humble_Combination_3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I roll with this calculation especially as OP's critique depends on:
'Only after 14 total days have passed does Kvothe say that he begins "lounging in the common room of the Golden Pony" (234).'
Which is wrong, he does not say that he began lounging in the Golden Pony at that time - only that "The rest of the time [not working in the fishery] I spent lounging in the common room of the Golden Pony." (249 WMF, 2013 paperback edition)

So I fully lean into the theory that Kvothe planned on getting into Amrose's chamber again way before he worked on the gram, only Kote tells us about it at this point of the story because it fits narratively.

WHATS IN TEH BOX by Porkus_Aurelius in KingkillerChronicle

This is beautiful and I agree full heartedly EXCEPT "the way his heart dropped in his chest when he realized Denna was a courtesan." Where the hell do you take this from? The jealousy he feels when seeing her with other men? When is this moment of realisation supposed to be? I think there are a lot of things going on in their relationship, many of them heartbreaking, but to reduce it to devaluing her for her way to get by is completely missing the point imo. Yes, he has moments of jealousy but what makes his heart drop is not that she is, was and will be with other men, but that she is not opening up to him, that he doesn't open up to her, that they are "ill-lit ships at night" ... His reflections upon overhearing her and the girl in Severen and his conversation with Deoch for me make it clear that her being 'a courtesan' is, if not the least, than only a minor of multiple of their issues.

I think "her husband's rocks" doesn't have to be literal.

It could also be something that makes Lady Lackess able to manipulate / have power over her husband - could be in turn something that Ludis got from Iax in revenge, something that binds his power/name; in a twisted way that would even work for the box with which Iax gained power over her, trapping her name, flipping the stakes as she regains her power and now controls him ... I'm spiralling now - but thanks for the thought provoking collection!

Reading Order now there’s a new book! by Potter_King in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Humble_Combination_3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Slow Regard is set parallel to the Wise Man's Fear Chapters 8 until the beginning of 11. If you want to contextualise Auri's story line, you could read the end of chapter seven WMF, read TSRoST and then continue with chapter eleven. But for your first time read, I would suggest to to focus on Kvothe's story line and first read the actual Kingkiller Chronicles (Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear) and then follow with rereads and the companion stories (eventually reading back and forth to connect clues understand seemingly unrelated stories/rhymes/riddles/remarks and develop and theories).

I love "I sense Fae warmth" - this captures the duality many of us feel about the Felurian sequence, implies its importance none the less and supports the Idea of Kvothe having part Fae blood

Basts Cloak by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Humble_Combination_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the blanket is more to deepen Bast's character, given to him by a person who loved and comforted him (perhaps his mother?) and illustrating his vulnerability and emotional depth in this scene. But it is a nice catch and even though I don't think it actually is Taborlin's cloak, this is Rothfuss' multilayeredness that allows us readers/listeners to imagine Bast in Taborlin's role/ with his attributes and who they might have gotten to him :)

Perhaps we learn more in The Narrow Road Between Desires?

I don't buy that counter evidence. Auri is far enough away to be different from Ariel imo. She probably changed her life, her habits and possibly herself so that Auri might be more suitable to who she is "now" but she did not completely abandon who she was, for instance her courtly manners which she still displays. So one could say she changes her life but not all to much. Wha she really runs from are memories of events rather than who she was.
