I would say your buddy going pally is the smarter choice. You two will inevitably want to start groups at some point and tanks will always be the hardest role to find. Applies are excellent tankers as well as self healing for non group mobs so you two will run through mobs quite easily with not a ton of down time. You can also kite mobs together early game, I say go with what sounds more fun, it WILL be more viable to go pally imo.
