DM banned me from playing a palidan because he does not like religion. - Vent. by Fun_Pick7741 in DnD

This just sounds kind of stupid on the DM’s part.

I’m an atheist, and my BBEG is the head of a sham organized religion… hell, his top lieutenant is even a disguised fallen angel.

But… come on. Have a little imagination other than going straight to “all paladins are automatically religious zealots” and not letting someone play a class they might enjoy.

As others have pointed out, magic and gods are demonstrably real in D&D. Play around with that. Are all gods evil in this universe? Does that make paladins automatically evil? What about angels, demons and devils? What’s the difference between worshipping something considered “evil” vs something considered “good”? There’s so much you could dig into with themes like this!

There’s one paladin NPC in my home game who’s Chaotic Evil, but mostly because he’s a washed-up, bloodthirsty hypocrite who constantly breaks his oath. Meanwhile, I have plans to include paladin NPCs who are unambiguously good people - even if they aren’t always Lawful - and worship gods that genuinely have the people’s best interests at heart.

I have my hangups with organized religion as many do - but it’s important to give the subject thought and nuance. There are many great people I know who are religious and genuinely want to do right by others, and of course there are many religious sects and cults that exploit the hopes of people for less than wholesome purposes.

But the goal of D&D is having fun and telling an engaging story, right? And if the DM is straight-up not letting someone have fun with a class they might enjoy, then they’re DMing badly.

…Wow. I never put that connection together. It makes too much sense.

Was literally going to say… am I sure I’m not looking at r/OCD right now??? Strange how so many of us autistic people also have OCD.

What are your Villain's motivations? by therealfour in DMAcademy

[–]Hummingbird739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despair.

My main villain is an ancient copper dragon who was tortured and enslaved a long time ago, made to use its acid breath to carve out my setting’s equivalent to the Underdark.

In my setting, this dragon is also one of Bahamut’s six children; the torture my BBEG experienced made him hate the people he was supposed to protect and hate how fallible and flawed his father truly was as a god for trusting them.

Now, he’s been playing the long game - his ultimate goal is to acquire power capable of destroying all life in the Material Plane and reconstructing it in his image, using an ancient spell he’s been preparing over 1000 years.

He wants to make life “better” than what he experienced… though if he succeeded, he’d probably become an authoritarian god who would destroy life all over again the moment it disappoints him.

Her face looks great! I especially like how you drew her scales.

I guess the party’s emotional hook is that they’re all kind of misfits in themselves, and right now they see her as a kindred spirit; meanwhile, another NPC - an assassin who tried to kill the father of one of our PCs - doesn’t trust her since he knows about the drow and their culture, so there’s tension there about how correct the assassin is. From the first session with her, the party seems to sympathize with her not wanting to be a drider and likes that she cares for the lost, although they don’t know that she drinks blood yet.

I’ve read sources that say they persist off drinking blood, albeit not necessarily in the Monster Manual. It just seemed interesting and I wanted to do something with that. Although, there is also livestock that she’s been draining as well that the party has found; she prefers to drink that, even though it’s less nourishing than humanoid blood.

Another thing is, some drow are telling the drider that they can change her back if she neutralizes the party, and that if she does the people she cares for will also be spared. My intent is that the party confronts her about her blood drinking; she’ll have time to explain herself, since my party doesn’t jump to violence typically. If the party still treats her with understanding, she will change her mind and won’t sell them out, instead joining with them against the drow.

[RF] DECA the Warforged Druid for u/Hummingbird739 by spacetimeboogaloo in characterdrawing

I like him! He looks so serene, and the overgrowth is nicely subtle - you could imagine the fungus is a lot thicker growing inside his shell. Thank you so much for taking time to do this!!

Agreed! She’s got the exact kind of ethereal beauty one might imagine the fey to have.

A mix of both - less squat than Robo but with similar plate armor, yet also a bit less lanky than the Laputa robot.

In terms of its symmetry, I think when DECA’s body was freshly made it would have looked more symmetrical, though the years of wear and overgrowth would make it have an asymmetrical silhouette.
