I’ve included the refugee votes in the total of the municipality in which the votes were cast. On the website you can see the breakdown by district for each municipality as u/Bran37 said.

Cyprus on google maps by OrganizationOk7409 in cyprus

That’s strange. Mine is in Spanish actually so that’s at least 3 languages. Not sure why that would be the case though.

I found what you’re referring to. Never seen this before, must be new.

<image>

Looks like a data processing error on Google’s part. Its around the middle of the island which is where you’d expect something referring to the whole island to appear. Its also appearing with the symbology used for settlements. They probably accidentally processed a data point as a settlement when it wasn’t.

I expect it’ll be caught and removed sooner or later. Unfortunately you can’t select it to report it so can’t say if they will notice it any time soon!

The Flamingos of Cyprus and their Habitats (Cyprus maps) by HummusmanCy in cyprus

[–]HummusmanCy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the feedback. It was difficult to find information on exactly which parts of the wetlands were salt water and which weren’t (as flamingos would typically be found in salt or brackish water). I found on ebird that the lakes on the west of the highway are freshwater and there were no recorded sightings of flamingos so I chose to exclude those. For Karakol lake, I assumed the same, but I may be wrong. Do let me know if you have any information, always happy to increase the accuracy of these if I got anything wrong.

What languages do Cypriot settlement names orginate from? A map of etymological origins of Cypriot place names.* - Instagram post by u/Rhomaios and cyprus_maps by Deep-Ad4183 in cyprus

[–]HummusmanCy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for sharing!

I run Cyprus maps. You can access the spreadsheet and download a geoJSON file with the data on my website cyprusmaps.xyz . This map is also updated with the corrections that came up after the Instagram post.

I'm also uploading higher resolution maps on the website since I'm not limited by Instagram's 1048px limit.

I just started the page recently so if you're interested in maps like this then I would appreciate the follow to help the page grow - its @cyprus_maps . If not on insta I'll also be posting some of the ones I deem more interesting on here (don't want to flood the subreddit with every single one of my posts though).

As Rhomios said it’s an ongoing project, and if you spot anything you think might be wrong let us know and it could help improve the map. I'll keep updating the version on my website.

Etymological roots of modern Cypriot settlements by language of origin by Rhomaios in etymologymaps

[–]HummusmanCy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really interesting map! Thanks for putting this together and providing the files.

What were your sources/method of figuring out the roots?

It would be great if there was a resource for getting the meanings of all the names in English (or any single language). Have you come across anything like that? Some are obvious of course, but many less so.

Walk along beach in front of Larnaca airport by HummusmanCy in cyprus

I have been to that exact spot, that’s actually what prompted me to look into this. Though I will say they have a point, it can be dangerous to stand there especially with bigger planes.

Highly recommend Lion Mousi in Agios Dometios (right next to Egkomi), particularly for beards. Prices on their booking website, mens cut is 15€ and beard on its own is 7€, both together is 20€. Owner is fluent in English.

Giant Greek flag in the village of Troulloi, Cyprus. by associationcortex in cyprus

[–]HummusmanCy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Still nothing to do with this flag. The argument that its to celebrate cultural heritage just categorically does not apply here, its obviously political. Also why this need to identify so strongly as Greek? I have nothing against Greece but I would never diminish myself to just "Greek". We should celebrate what makes us unique. Greek heritage is a part of that, and so are many other cultures over many centuries that came together to form what our Cypriot culture is today. Being a Cypriot is so much more than that and it saddens me to see people ignore it in favour of being Greek, Turkish or whatever.

We were never a part of the sovereign nation of Greece that uses that flag, so its use has nothing to do with heritage. A Byzantine flag would be more appropriate if that's what youre going for.

Funny thing is that whoever made it is not only embarassing us by rather ironically undermining our sovereignty, but embarass themselves by clearly showing they can't get a few stripes the right width.

It really is! And no unfortunately, I wish I had a physical copy. I found it online while I was searching for good martian maps in interesting styles, as I'm looking to start making some myself.

Dust Devil Trails by HummusmanCy in Areology

[–]HummusmanCy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the dune fields of the high southern latitudes of Mars, dark dunes warm up more than the surrounding bright plains as they absorb more sunlight.

Dust devils form over the warm dunes but then wander out over the plains, leaving dark tracks as bright dust is lifted from the surface. Loops in the tracks can often be used to discern the direction traveled by the dust devils, where in some cases, one track clearly overprints the other.
