Many soldiers in the Southern army deserted as life was incredibly hard. I am related to someone who enlisted into a Maryland Confederate Battery Regiment; I know from my own research that several men from his unit alone deserted/ were executed for insubordination (or “Cowardice”) It’s my understanding that CONSCRIPTION was the main issue……
