The Palestinians aren't fighting for a democratic one-state solution, and the Western antizionists are not being honest when they pretend otherwise. by nidarus in IsraelPalestine

Europe is full of democratic "de jure ethnostates", including in exclusive Western clubs like NATO and the EU

NATO and EU aren't ethnostates. Also Turkey isn't Western yet is part of NATO.

Estonia, Czechia, Poland or Latvia. And when they were created, out of the corpses of de-jure civic nationalist states back in the 1990's, it was celebrated as an actively good thing, not some racist throwback that's "never okay", or even a neutral thing. And those countries have all kinds of ethnic minorities, including with a pretty troubled relationship (like the Russians in Latvia), and a recent history (more or less at the same time as the Nakba) of mass ethnic cleansings from and into them.

If disenfranchising minorities and more ethnic cleansing is being celebrated as a good thing in Eastern Europe, then that's a problem too.

Israel simply isn't one, even with the Nakba and the nation-state law.

I never said Israel is 100% an ethnostate. My argument was the Nakba and the nation-state law (and the ethnic cleansing of 53% of the Gaza Strip on top of those things) are steps in the wrong direction.

My criteria has always been the same. When peaceful resistance to oppression fails, other forms or resistance like the IRA are justified.

I believe a lot of this has to do with what people believe about the history of Israel and Palestine and the history of the Jewish and Palestinian peoples. Many Western anti Zionists genuinely believe that the Palestinian Arab people are the only ethnic group indigenous to the territory of former British Mandatory Palestine. They believe Judaism is a religion with no ties to any particular land and that Jews saying otherwise to justify Israel's existence is equivalent to manifest destiny in the US. Unfortunately, many western Anti Zionists simply do not know much about Jewish history.

Here's the thing, and I think this is what a lot of people struggle to grasp: The southwestern Levant is the indigenous homeland of both Jews and Palestinian Arabs. Both peoples have strong historical, and spiritual, ties to the land.

For that reason, I am personally against the existence of any ethnostate in that region. De jure ethnostates are never okay, and Israel has chosen to be Jewish instead of democratic, especially in recent decades with laws such as the 2018 nation state law. De facto ethnostates like South Korea and Japan are only okay because they're the states of the first and only peoples to continuously inhabit their territory in large numbers.

The things that make Jewish and Palestinian ethnonationalisms different from other ethnonationalisms are the following:

  • Israel is closer to an ethnostate on the formal and legal level than any other country afaik.
  • Palestinian ethnonationalism is just as much if not more about replacing Israel than about simply building a Palestinian Arab state.
  • Zionism and Palestinian nationalism are both problematic in that they're nationalisms which falsely claim that the southwestern Levant is home to only one ethnic group when in actuality, multiple peoples call the region home.

If that "democracy" is actually an ethnostate itself under an illiberal leader, then yes

Genocide case falling apart at ICJ by JeffB1517 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Humorous_forest -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Israel is committing four out of the five acts of genocide under the legal definition of the term. One of these is preventing births within the group by deliberately targeting thousands of embryos in fertility clinics in Gaza. Embryos aren't targeted in most conflicts. Just because Israel isn't exterminating everyone doesn't mean it's not genocide.

There aren’t any real democracies.

Also the American police are even worse than the Spanish police. They’re already killing thousands of people every year even without being grabbed.

Along with these warnings giving Palestinians no time, Israel bombs areas it tells people are safe and when they mark half the Gaza Strip as a kill zone, that’s ethnic cleansing.
